Yulex Corporation opens Guayule seed and genetics R&D centre

Yulex Corporation is opening a Seed & Genetics Center focused the development of guayule plantations and best practice for all kinds of applications. According to the company, Yulex’s Seed & Genetics Center will support the global commercial development of guayule. Additional research activities at the Center involve the refinement of sustainable production techniques designed to improve guayule’s rubber yield and quality through natural processes, with a focus on soil management and natural crop production inputs.

PanAridus joins Cooper in guayule consortium

Genetic bioscience firm ParAridus has joined Cooper Tire & Rubber Company in the consortium sharing a US$6.9 million Biomass Research and Development Initiative (BRDI) grant toward development of guayule plant-based polymers for use in tyre manufacturing. According to the companies, he BRDI is a joint effort between the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) to promote development and analysis of feed stocks, biofuels and bio-based products. PanAridus replaces Yulex Corporation on the grant team, assuming Yulex’s responsibilities as the primary manufacturer of the material.

Cooper to partner in plant based rubber project

Parthenium argentatum, or guayule, is a flowering shrub native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, and can be used as an alternative source of latex. It is precisely this quality that has piqued the interest of Cooper Tire & Rubber. The tyre maker has looked into alternative latex sources for a couple of years now and on 29 February it announced having entered into an agreement with Yulex Corporation to jointly evaluate and develop guayule polymers and resins for tyre applications.
