Toyo Tire and Continental Tire North America have recalled 24 and 50 truck tyres respectively from a “targeted batch.” The announcements follow Yokohama’s decision to recall 69 of its commercial tyres that were produced at the same GTY plant in Mount Vernon Illinois. The total number of recalled products now stands at 143.
Yokohama Tire Corp. is recalling 69 Yokohama brand medium truck tyres because of shoulder area compound problems, Tire Review has reported. The company said the defective tyres contain a “non-specified compound in the shoulder area of the tyre” and “during extended running, the shoulder area of the tyre could lift, resulting in degraded ride and handling” and potentially a tread separation.
Japanese based tyre manufacturer Yokohama has officially launched its Advan brand. In an effort to unify its global image, Yokohama will now adopt one name for its premium products, instead of the regional variations that currently exist. According to Yokohama, the newly launched brand reflects the company’s “highest performance” and “highest quality” image. From now on, the Advan name will adorn all of the company’s new global high performance products. At the same time as launching this new product concept, the company also released two new Advan branded high performance products, the Advan Sport and Advan ST.
Although Yokohama only launched Advan as its “global flagship brand” recently, the name has actually been rolling around for a while, having first been introduced in 1978 as a motorsport tyre. Prior to its international re-launch, Advan was also associated with sports category products, mainly in Japan. In terms of branding, Yokohama considers itself to be something of a pioneering company. It claims to have challenged tyre manufacturers involved in motorsport activity at that time, by sponsoring a “works coloured” vehicle.
Speaking to Yokohama HPT managing director, David Seward revealed that next year Yokohama, and therefore Advan, would be involved in 26 motorsport events. In addition, the company will be running a UK dealer scheme in order to further promote its flagship brand. While attending the Advan launch in Dubai, Tyres & Accessories also learnt that Yokohama would be involved in Le Mans Endurance Series and would also be likely to take part in the Le Mans 24 hour race.
The so-called 2003 Advan Le Mans project is probably the most high profile event Yokohama has been involved in recently. In this instance the car not only ran on Advan tyres, but was plastered top-to-bottom in Advan colours and marketing paraphernalia. The car was driven by Japanese ex-Formula 1 driver, Ukyo Katayama, who was also on hand in Dubai to testify to the products’ quality. According to the Kamikaze Katayama, as he is sometimes known, any doubts he had about the quality of the tyres were proved wrong by the end of the race.
Now having publicised that it will use the new brand globally, Yokohama plans to continue with its “aggressive” two-pronged marketing strategy. That is, motorsport involvement and securing high profile OE contracts. The most recent example of this is the Bentley Continental GT. The GT is capable of speeds up to 198 mph and as such is fitted with ZR rated 20 inch versions of the new Advan Sport. In this instance the tyre features an embossed Bentley ‘B’ logo highlighting both the exclusivity of the vehicle and its associated tyres. Yokohama Rubber says it plans to continue pursuing this type of co-development opportunity and other similarly high profile associations look likely.
Yokohama plans to develop the Advan name into a “top-of-the-line” brand across all of its tyre categories including its Luxury and SUV lines. That is why the company released two new products and launched the Advan brand simultaneously. Available in 17 to 22 inch sizes, the ZR rated Advan sport, is described as a tyre that “boasts ultrahigh performance as well as driving comfort and quietness.” The ADVAN ST is a SUV tyre designed for use with high-powered SUVs. During production Yokohama tested the tyres’ high performance capabilities on the Nurburgring circuit. The company also assessed the product’s real-life high-speed proficiency on the German autobahn.
It was no coincidence that Yokohama chose to launch its new “global flagship” brand identity in Dubai, a country with growing associations to motorsport. One obvious reason for travelling to the United Arab Emirates was for the company to present the opportunity to test its latest offering on the Dubai Autodrome. The new course is competing to become a future Formula 1 venue, and therefore is certainly capable of testing the products’ high-speed resilience.
Local union officials at Yokohama Tire Corp’s Salem plant have agreed to a new labour agreement, guaranteeing job security for more than two years. Mike Amos, president of Local 1023 of United Steelworkers of America (USWA), told local newspapers that members voted by a three to one majority to ratify the collective bargaining agreement. He said about 80 per cent of approximately 670 members voted.
Kumho’s ECTSA V70A has won a tyre test of road-legal track day tyres. The test, run by German motoring magazine Auto Bild test & tuning, pitted semi-slicks from Michelin, Toyo, Yokohama and Pirelli against each other. Auto Bild testers praised the winning tyre for its excellent lateral and directional stability as well as its dry braking. The magazine awarded Michelin and Toyo joint second place, Yokohama took fourth position, while Pirelli came last. Auto Bild testers also praised the generally high quality of all of the entrants.
One of the highlights of the Aftermarket show, from a tyre point of view, was the Model Tyre Retailer display. Set up in the form of a Yokohama Advan Dealership, the exhibit was designed to be a demonstration of best practice. Each hour, on the hour, tyre technicians gave 30 minute presentations showcasing market leading products and services.
Speaking at the opening of the Model Tyre Dealer display, NTDA national chairman, Martin Rowlands commented: “The exhibit offers an insight into the type of equipment and services that modern, forward looking tyre shops are beginning to use. The pace of development for both tyres and vehicles has accelerated at a frightening speed over the last decade and there is now a need for better diagnostic equipment, better technical knowledge and above all premises that are clean, efficient and inviting! Customers have become better informed and more demanding, but also more receptive to service quality,”
The exhibit featured tyres produced by Yokohama, Pro-Align wheel alignment systems, REMA Tip Top Machinery and CP Designs tools. The organisational forces behind the stand were show organisers Haymarket Exhibitions and alignment specialist Pro-Align.

Yokohama is claiming that the days of stability control systems could be numbered, due to a new programme developed by the company. Yokohama explains that the system uses a sensor fitted to the wheel rim meaning that the device takes its measurement directly from the tyre. The thinking behind the product is that it will only function when a driver really needs it, for example when a tyre loses grip. This contrasts with other designs, which have been criticised for ‘nannying’ drivers.
Yokohama and the United Steelworkers of America have reached a provisional agreement regarding a new contract for the manufacturer’s Salem plant, according to American news sources.
The contract is pending approval by union members said Yokohama. However the terms of the new arrangement have not been disclosed. The previous contract, which expired in June 2003, was extended through negotiations. The Salem plant produces passenger, high performance and light truck tyres.

The YDC is intensively equipped with advanced information technologies, workshop functions and audiovisual equipment so that it can contribute to the improvement of passenger-tyre appearance and the reduction of product development lead-time at the company.

Yokohama Rubber Co has announced that, by the end of December, it will have purchased 193,327 square metres of land adjacent to Yokohama’s Thailand manufacturing plant. When the newly purchased land is added to the existing site, this means that the Thailand subsidiary will more than double in size, growing to 418,427 square meters. Upon completion of the expansion plans, Yokohama Thailand will have a larger site area than any other Yokohama rubber subsidiary.
Following the news that it will double the size of its Thailand production plant, Yokohama has also announced that in December it will establish Yokohama Hose & Coupling (Hangzhou) a subsidiary for assembling and selling high-pressure hoses and their metal fittings in China. The subsidiary’s plant will be located in the Economy and Technology Development Zone, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province and commence operation in April 2005. The new company will be capitalized at $350,000.
In China, the demand for construction machinery has been rapidly increasing because of consecutive large-scale projects associated with the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the Shanghai Expo in 2010. High-pressure hoses are a indispensable components for hydraulic devices used in construction machinery. At least for the time being, the new company will concentrate on the OEM business with Japanese construction machinery makers. At the same time, however, the company says it will “proactively conduct market research” in connection with the demand for replacement high-pressure hoses. It also plans to begin local production of metal fittings as soon as possible.
Continental Tire North America has announced that it will raise prices of its commercial and off-the-road tyres, from the 1 January 2005, as a result of rising raw material and other costs.
The increase, which will be between three and six per cent will affect all of its truck and off-road brands including Continental, General and Semperit.
In its third quarter Yokohama Rubber saw net sales rise by 4.3 per cent to ¥189.7 billion. The company claims that this reflected “solid tyre sales overseas.” However, net income fell by a massive 51.6 per cent, to ¥719 million. The manufacturer claims that this was due to inventory losses and a loss on devaluation of securities investment.
Operating income also declined by 6.3 per cent to ¥4.3 billion, and has been put down to the increase in prices of natural rubber and other raw materials. Yokohama is also citing higher logistics costs stemming from increased export volume and a jump in shipping charges to the decline in income.
