Yokohama Rally Tyres “Performing Brilliantly”: Tom Cave

Following a Rally Poland with large measures of success and frustration, young British World Rally Championship driver Tom Cave reserved special praise for his tyre supplier Yokohama, which uniquely provides the rubber for his Ford Fiesta: “The Yokohama tyres worked extremely well for us this weekend. We used the 195 section tyres and the outright grip was exactly what we needed. The tyres were also incredibly consistent and stood up to the conditions exceptionally well. We had no damage or puncture issues at all and they were very hard wearing as well as performing brilliantly.”

The 17 year-old from Aberdovey won 13 of the 15 stages he contested in his class (Group N3, up to 2000cc), but was denied the class victory when the cylinder head gasket on his Ford Fiesta rally car failed on Saturday, meaning he had to retire from the second day and incur time penalties before rejoining and finishing the event on Sunday. Though disappointed with the result, Cave expressed his delighted with the pace that he, co-driver Craig Parry, the team and the Yokohama tyres had demonstrated over the weekend. Commenting after the finish, he said; “While I’m obviously extremely disappointed that we didn’t get the result we hoped for up until the problem with the engine, we can definitely take a lot of positives from this event. Fastest stage time in class with the exception of one proper stage shows that our notes were working very well and the car was perfect, except for the engine problem. I think this was the weekend where everything seemed to come together – at the beginning and the end, at any rate!”

S.D. International Made New ITMA Member

S.D. International, the company behind the Pace and Zeta brands, has been accepted into membership of the Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association. The manufacturer’s membership means that the association now comprises twelve members: Alliance, Alfred Graham Ltd., GiTi, Hankook, Kumho, Lassa, Maxxis, S.D.International, Toyo, Westlake and Yokohama.

Peter Nicholls, S.D. International’s Sales & Marketing Director explained his company’s decision to join ITMA: “We are rapidly becoming a significant player in the UK and European markets, so have been considering this move for some time. We want to play our part in the industry as well as better protect our interests in the face of the current legislative and regulatory onslaught. ITMA membership fulfils that need.”

Yokohama Tyres on Top in Sidecar Manx TT

Riders choosing the Japanese tyre brand Yokohama have dominated timed practice for this year’s sidecar class of the world-famous Isle of Man TT races. Fastest in evening practice was last year’s double winner Nick Crowe, posting a time of 19min30sec to give an average lap speed of 116.03mph, just shy of the lap record. This year, 34 of the 47 runners and riders have chosen to use Yokohama tyres, which have experienced an unbroken run of 15 victories. Eight of the top ten riders are using Yokohama as well as customer service from dealer Express Tyres.

Yokohama HPT to Support RX Racing in Portugal

The UK distributor for Yokohama tyres, Yokohama HPT, will be heading south to Portugal next month, as it supports RX Racing when the buggies form part of the first regional final towards this year’s Race of Champions. With the 2009 Race of Champions moving to the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, home of last year’s Olympics, the organisers of the event have responded to demand from numerous countries to join the Nation’s Cup by creating the first regional final. The event, to be held in the Estadio do Dragao in Porto, the home of FC Porto, will see teams from Portugal, Spain, Italy and Monaco fight for a place in the ROC.

The format for the first final will follow a similar one to the ROC, with teams of drivers from every discipline of motorsport competing on a tarmac course laid out in the stadium. Saturday will see Portuguese drivers going head-to-head for a place alongside local Production car World Rally Championship leader Armindo Araujo to form the four-strong team for Sunday’s competition.

Tyremaker Gets EPA Partner Nod

Yokohama Tire Corp. has been named a “partner” by the EPA SmartWay programme. Yokohama’s new partnership status is in the “shippers” category, which means that the company ships more than 50 per cent of its products on SmartWay-certified transport carriers.

According to the EPA, Yokohama’s freight efforts will contribute to the goal of eliminating 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012. (Tire Review/Akron)

Audi Opts for Yokohama’s Advan on Q7

Audi’s list of requirements for its Q7 4×4 include a tyre capable of handling the vehicle’s considerable performance output. The manufacturer has thus decided upon the Yokohama Advan as original equipment on its first full-size, luxury SUV, and is offering the Advan in two sizes – 275/45R20 110Y or 265/50R19 110Y – for both the front and rear wheels.

The tyre was selected, comments Yokohama, for its high level of overall performance – proven stability and comfort at high speeds (300 km/h and above), as well as excellent braking. The Q7 is the third Audi model to have Yokohama tyres fitted as original equipment, joining the S6 and S8 in Audi’s top-class S series.

Yokohama’s Team Geolandar Fielding Electric Vehicle at Pikes Peak

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is arguably the world’s best-known hill climb event, and in 2009 Yokohama Rubber is fielding an electric vehicle in the event. The company’s Team Geolandar off-road racing team will race to the 4,301-metre summit on July 19 in a self-created vehicle equipped with Geolandar H/T-S tyres.

The Japanese manufacturer refers to the Colorado, USA based event as the “Yokohama Team Geolandar EV Off-Road Challenge,” and states its aim in participating is to contribute towards meeting its environmental responsibilities. In this instance Yokohama wishes to promote awareness of the current and future potential of electric vehicles and gain real world experience to help it develop electric vehicle tyres suitable for use in severe off-road conditions.

Yokohama Makes Organisational Changes

Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has executed an internal reorganization process that will take effect as of 26 June 2009. According to the manufacturer, the company’s Tire Group aims to improve its business efficiency and speed by shaping itself around six functional organizations: sales & marketing, production, technical, quality assurance, product planning, and logistics. The group says it also aims to form “an organization capable of developing and executing a global business strategy with the establishment of an integrated sales setup to cover both domestic and overseas markets and the enhancement of global functions in technical and production divisions.”

Yokohama Rubber Posts Net Loss in Latest Fiscal Year

Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has posted a net loss of 5.7 billion yen (£38.7 million) for the financial year ended 31 March 2009, compared with net income of 21.1 billion yen (£142.6 million) in full-year 2008. This came as a result of operating income declining 61.3 per cent, to 12.8 billion yen (£87 million), on a 6.2 per cent decline in net sales, to 517.3 billion yen (£3.5 billion). The company’ s Tire Group saw operating income plummet 62 per cent, to 9.9 billion yen (£67.4 million), on a 4.8 per cent decline in sales, to 399.7 billion yen (£2.7 billion).

Yokohama Cuts Ribbon on Thai Proving Ground

Less than two years’ after being granted approval by the Thailand Board of Investment, Yokohama Rubber has officially opened its ‘Tire Test Center of Asia’ proving ground in Rayong Province. Work began on the 2.5 billion yen centre in September 2007 and the site was ready for use last December. Although the opening ceremony was not held until April 30, tyre testing has been performed at the proving ground since January 2009.

Projected Yokohama Net Losses Smaller Than Anticipated

It’s not all bad news out there – Yokohama Rubber has announced that its losses in the fiscal year to March 31, 2009, will be smaller than the projections announced on March 24, 2009. Management now projects consolidated operating income of 13.0 billion yen (£92 million), down 60.7 per cent from the previous fiscal year; and a consolidated net loss of 5.5 billion yen (£38.9), down from a consolidated net profit of 21.1 billion yen in the previous fiscal year; on consolidated net sales of 517.0 billion (£3.7 billion), down 6.2 per cent from the previous year. The revised projection for operating income 13.0 per cent higher, the revised projection for net loss 31.3 per cent less, and the revised projection for net sales 0.6 per cent lower than the projections announced on March 24.

Yokohama to Exhibit at Auto Shanghai 2009

Yokohama Rubber has confirmed its presence at the Auto Shanghai 2009 exhibition, which runs from Monday April 20 to Tuesday April 28. The company will use the Chinese show as a venue for introducing its environmentally friendly and high performance models. In addition, to market its products in China, this year Yokohama Rubber has appointed the popular Chinese actor Louis Koo as the company’s ‘face’ in this market.

Yokohama Kicks Off Dealer Training Program

Dealers across the USA will get a chance to test many of Yokohama’s tyres – including the all-new ADVAN Neova AD08 – in a series of 10 specialized training programmes beginning this month. Cities on the 10-city training tour include Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Texas, Orlando, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Kansas City, Memphis and Albuquerque.

The ADVAN Neova AD08, an updated version of Yokohama’s ADVAN Neova AD07, will be available in the US in May in 32 sizes ranging from 15 to 19 inches. (Tire Review/Akron)

Yokohama Reports Loss on Revaluation of Investment Securities

Yokohama Rubber has announced it will record a 2.9 billion yen (£20.4 million) loss on the revaluation of investment securities during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009. Company management is analysing the loss in the context of Yokohama’s overall financial performance and will determine whether the loss mandates a revision of the company’s fiscal projections.

Yokohama’s Salem, US Factory Receives ‘Forever Forest’ Treatment

A tree-planting day will be held at Yokohama Tire’s Salem factory in the US state of Virginia as part of the company’s “Forever Forest” project. On April 4, company employees and volunteers from the local community are set to plant 2,000 trees, thereby helping to offset the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions. The assembled team will be guided in their activities by Japanese ecologist, 2006 Blue Planet prizewinner Akira Miyawaki.
