Yokohama reports Japan disaster relief activities

Giving an update on its assistance to relief efforts following the Japan earthquake and tsunami, Yokohama Rubber reports that as of April 28 Yokohama group companies and their employees had donated a total of approximately 88,500,000 yen (US$1,100,000) to the relief effort. That total includes donations of 61,700,000 yen ($760,000) by Yokohama group companies and their employees in Japan, including a 50,000,000 yen ($610,000) corporate donation by the parent company, and 26,800,000 yen ($330,000) by group companies and their employees in other nations. The companies and employees made their contributions mainly through the Red Cross societies in their nations.

Senior management changes at Yokohama announced

At a meeting of the Yokohama Rubber Board of Directors on April 27, two “informal” changes in its representative directorship were decided upon. Tadanobu Nagumo, currently the company’s president and representative director, will become its chairman and CEO and representative director, while Hikomitsu Noji, who at present serves as director and senior managing corporate officer plus president of the company’s Tire Group, is to become Yokohama Rubber’s president and representative director and president of the Tire Group.

Yokohama to share China strategy during Auto Shanghai

At the upcoming Auto Shanghai 2011, which runs from April 19 to 28, Yokohama Rubber will hold a press conference outlining its business strategy for China. One part of its plans for the growing market there is the release of the BluEarth eco tyre range; following its recent launch in Japan and Europe, Yokohama Rubber intends to release the line-up in China this autumn. Yokohama says it will use the show to improve recognition of BluEarth within China. During Auto Shanghai the Japanese tyre maker will also publicly announce its activities in collaboration with the China Environmental Protection Foundation.

YHPT introduces 20th anniversary-themed MAK wheel alongside two others

The UK distributor for MAK replacement alloy wheels, Yokohama HPT, says it is helping the manufacturer celebrate its 20th anniversary by introducing three new styles into the UK. These include the Venti (Italian for 20); a striking design intended to reiterate the company’s design flair and high quality production values.

Yokohama HPT talks four new UK wheels from TSW

The UK distributor for TSW replacement alloy wheels Yokohama HPT has announced that it has added four new styles to its 2011 UK range of wheels. Two of these wheels use TSW’s “Rotary Forging” manufacturing process to create wheels of higher strength than previous models but with lower weight. The technique involves introducing the molten metal to the mould under pressure, as the mould rotates at high speed. Because of the flow of metal, says Yokohama, the resulting wheel has higher inherent strength than a cast wheel while it can also be made with lower weight, assisting vehicles’ acceleration. Also, it helps to reduce the unsprung weight of the car, which in turn leads to more responsive suspension and hence, improved handling characteristics.

Yokohama lifts US market OTR tyre prices

Prices for all OTR tyres sold by Yokohama Tire Corporation in the US will increase by up to ten per cent on May 1. The tyre maker states that, in addition to this increase, other in-line adjustments will be announced at a later date. Announcing the scheduled increase, Yokohama Tire Corporation’s vice-president of OTR sales, Gary Nash, reassured consumers that the revised pricing was not due to the recent earthquake in Japan: “It’s from the escalating costs of raw materials, such as natural rubber,” he said, adding that additional factors necessitating the increase are the rising costs in transportation and manufacturing. “We do our best to integrate our operational efficiencies, technology and environmental procedures to produce the best OTR tyres at competitive prices. The increasing costs, unfortunately, must be reflected in our product pricing.”

Yokohama Rubber increases export tyre prices up to 15%

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., announced today that it will increase the prices of its export tyre products starting from April 2011, due to sharply rising raw material costs. The price increases will apply to all tyre products for passenger cars, light trucks, trucks and buses, and vehicles for construction and industry, for all markets outside Japan. The company said it will “endeavour to hold the increase within a maximum of 15 per cent, but higher prices may be necessary for specific regions or products.”

Cooper expresses ‘surprise’ at off-take reports

Following the publication of an interview with representatives of China’s Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber tyre manufacturing business, Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe has expressed “surprise” at one particular reported detail. In an email to Tyres & Accessories the company’s marketing and communications manager, Sarah McRoberts contested any suggestion that the company “was claiming to make tyres for Cooper.”

Two more Yokohama plants obtain ISO 14001 certification

Certification according to ISO 14001 has been granted to two Yokohama Rubber group companies; Suzhou Yokohama Tire Co., Ltd., a tyre production and sales company in China; and Yokohama Tyre Vietnam Inc., a tyre production and sales company in Vietnam. This certification is in line with Yokohama Rubber’s ‘Grand Design 100’ medium-term management plan: With ISO 14001 at the heart of business operations, domestic and overseas group companies endeavour to maintain uniform-quality, high-level environmental management, and all production sites have been working to acquire ISO 14001 certification,” the company reported in a statement. At present a total of 15 production bases – ten factories and five Yokohama Rubber Group companies – have achieved ISO 14001 status in Japan, while the two abovementioned companies bring the total number of Yokohama production sites to reach this level to 13.

Yokohama team acknowledged for cashew nut shell innovation

Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a group of four men working for Yokohama Rubber developed a bead filler compound for high performance tyres based on polymerised cardanol, a chemical derived from liquid extracted out of cashew nut shells. Cashew based products were already in use to improve bleeding on the surface of green rubber, but the cardanol based product developed by Shineru Shinoda, Masayoshi Daio, Hideki Ishida and Tetsuji Kawazura providing an extremely high hardness after vulcanisation while at the same time keeping the viscosity of the compound low during processing. Some two decades later, on February 4, 2011, the Yokohama Rubber team’s efforts were acknowledged with their receipt of the “Mortimer T. Harvey Award 2010” from Cardolite Corporation, a leading manufacturer of cashew nutshell liquid products.

Yokohama US “guarantees” steer tyre cost-per-mile savings at Kentucky’s MATS

Yokohama Tire is giving truck fleet owners in the USA a chance to try out its 101ZLT steer tyre in open comparison with other tyres on the open roads in what the company is calling the 101ZLT SmartSolutionT Challenge. The contest will begin at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) in Louisville, Kentucky between 31 March and 2 April.

Toyo announces Japan relief donation

Toyo Tire & Rubber has joined its fellow countrymen Bridgestone and Yokohama Rubber in announcing assistance to the regions of Japan affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami. In a press statement expressing the company’s deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones or otherwise suffered in the March 11 disaster, Toyo Tires announced it will donate 150 million yen (£1.1 million) to assist in relief efforts. The company is giving is giving 100 million yen to the Miyagi Prefecture and 50 million yen to the Fukushima Prefecture.

Yokohama Tire gains fourth Vulcan ‘Gold Alliance Supplier’ award

For the fourth consecutive year, Yokohama Tire Corporation’s off-the-road division has been awarded a Gold Alliance Supplier award from Alabama, US-based Vulcan Materials Company. Vulcan is a major producer of construction aggregates, which includes crushed stone, sand and gravel used in nearly all forms of construction.

Bridgestone restarts Japan production, TBR tyres given priority

Bridgestone has given further information on restarting production in its factories located in Japan’s Kanto region or north of that region. Production at the company’s Yokohama and Tokyo factories has already recommenced, although electricity supply and other issues are still restricting a return to full production at the Yokohama site. It is anticipated that Bridgestone’s Tochigi, Nasu and Kurioso factories will recommence production on March 16. Deliveries from the Tokyo plant are expected to restart on March 16 and deliveries from Tochigi and Nasu on March 18 or thereafter.
