Platinum Batteries (Europe) Ltd, the UK’s largest independent battery distributor has acknowledged the contribution PACT – the joint connectivity initiative between TecCom and eParts – makes to its business, particularly during the busy winter period.
Ten new products are joining the ContiTread pre-cure retread portfolio. The first of these is the M+S marked LDR 1+ drive axle tread; fives sizes are available –205/75 R 17.5, 215/75 R 17.5, 225/75 R 17.5, 235/75 R 17.5 and 245/70 R 17.5. Continental says these treads are aimed at retreading partners catering to inner-city and regional hauliers operating light and medium-heavy trucks. Two new winter tyre treads have also been released.
With the nights closing in and winter well on its way, Mercedes-Benz Retailers are helping customers to prepare for the changing road conditions in the months ahead by stocking Cold Weather Tyres.
Mercedes-Benz points out that Cold Weather Tyres are effective as soon as the temperature falls below seven degrees Celsius, not just when there is snow on the ground.
Michelin will provide three tyre lines as original equipment on Porsche’s new Macan SUV. Most notably, the French tyre manufacturer’s new Latitude Sport 3 will make its debut on the SUV, while the Latitude Alpin 2 will equip the Macan with a winter fitment and the Latitude Tour HP all-season tyre will be used for the SUV’s American release, in addition to some other specific regions. The Sport 3 and Tour HP are available in three size specifications, while the Alpin 2 will be supplied in one size specification.
Mercedes-Benz reports that its UK retailers now have stocks of cold weather tyres for the coming winter. Apart from the obvious benefits winter tyres offer – better grip and shorter braking distances at temperatures below seven degrees Celsius – the cold weather tyres supplied by Mercedes-Benz dealers are supplied with the ‘MO’ sidewall designation, confirming their approval an a Mercedes-Benz original equipment fitment.
This year point S returns as official event sponsor of the World Cup Nordic Opening, which will take place in Finland from 29 November to 1 December. Billed as the “world’s biggest world cup event in winter sports”, the World Cup Nordic Opening is a series of ten ski jumping, cross country and Nordic combined competitions; point S will serve as event sponsor for the cross country 15 kilometre men’s pursuit, which will take place on 1 December.
With its new SprayBib VF420/95R50, Michelin says it has introduced a size that is unique in the crop-conditioning segment. The new tyre is on display at Agritechnica this week and the tyre maker says this extension of the range demonstrates its “ability to integrate innovative technologies that satisfy farmers’ needs throughout the crop cycle.”
Goodyear has announced the shipment of its seven millionth UltraGrip 8 in Europe making the tyre one of its all-time leading winter products. The tyre, which launched in 2011, is the most recent in the UltraGrip branded range first launched in 1971.
In North America, Michelin Retread Technologies has introduced an all weather traction retread, optimised for severe winter conditions. The Michelin XDS 2 Pre-Mold drive tyre retread, according to the company, can provide a 10 per cent improvement in tread life over the XDS Pre-Mold.
The sequel, or successor if you prefer, to Dunlop’s Winter Response is now available throughout the UK following its recent launch. The new Winter Response 2, designed for small and compact tyres, picks up where the Winter Response left off and is described by Dunlop as the “perfect complement” to its high-performance SP Winter Sport 4D. The Winter Response 2 is available in 22 dimensions from 155/65 R14 to 195/65 R 15.
Bridgestone New Zealand has entered into sponsorship partnerships with two organisations looking after the country’s native flora and fauna, and its best-known bird in particular – the Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park and the Motuora Restoration Society.
A new addition has been made to the winter tyre private label distributed by point S. The WinterStar 3 follows on from the WinterStar 2, a point S says it offers optimised traction and braking performance on snow, very good aquaplaning qualities, improved handling on dry roads, high stability in curves and low rolling noise and higher rolling comfort.
New for this winter is the Nokian WR SUV 3; a rugged, high-performance winter tyre, with ultimate snow grip thanks to snow claws, for all-round use on SUVs.

Its Snow Claws bite firmly into the snow and the tyre effectively resists slush planing and aquaplaning and can cope with all of the surprises that winter may have in store. GT Radial has announced its plan to make its debut at Coach & Bus Live 2013 in support its recently launched all-position urban city-bus tyre, the GAU861. The flagship Giti Tire brand will also display the GAR820 regional all-position tyre and the GT629 regional drive axle model. Tony McHugh, sales and marketing director at Giti Tire UK, said: “The GAU861 was very well received when it was launched at The CV Show in April, and interest and demand since means that the participation of GT Radial at Coach & Bus Live 2013 is a must.” GT Radial will be located at stand M138.
