Continental Interested in Matador “Rubber“

According to German media reports, Continental is reportedly considering paying 150 million euros for Matador’s “Rubber” business unit, which mainly produces tyres. As this unit produces moulds and tyre construction machines in larger volumes than Conti does at its Hanover-Stoecken plant, workers have raised numerous objections against the move. Hanover-Stoecken was recently the subject of job cuts in its passenger car department.

Referring to the future relationship between Continental and Matador, company spokesman Hannes Boekhoff confirmed discussions are taking place: “The parties are negotiating about a possible extension of their strategic partnership to include the passenger car tyre range. The negotiations are not final yet.” Further details are not yet known and so far Matador has not released any information on the subject.

Continental AG’s two tyre divisions – Passenger and Light Truck Tires and Commercial Vehicle Tires – are addressing the company’s vision of making individual mobility safer and more comfortable with about 850 employees in the field of research and development (R&D). In order to manage the balancing act between scientific curiosity and practical use both tyre divisions have implemented an innovation management system. The tasks of the system include actively seeking new business fields and motivating staff to incorporate new ideas.

Mytyres Promotes Cold Weather Tyres

Mytyres.co.uk, the Delticom AG owned online retailer, is promoting the use of winter tyres by offering products priced as low as £18.10 per tyre. While it is not clear exactly which product is priced at this level, Delticom’s house brand is Star Performer produced by Nankang. Delticom published details of the promotion in a recent email which also included consumer information on air pressure and irregular wear advice. It even recommended a tread depth of at least 4mm for ideal tread depth.

New Interstate Tyres On The Way

The Interstate passenger car tyre range consists of 29 sizes, in two different patterns; the Interstate Touring IST-1 and the Interstate Sport IXT-1. This covers a large part of the European replacement market for passenger car tyres.

An Opportunity Missed?

As summer gives way to colder and wetter weather, a number of companies are offering advice about driving in worsening conditions. Two press releases received in the same week are typical; one was from Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe, warning of the increased danger of skidding and another was from ATS Euromaster, offering a free 10 point winter safety check to motorists.

Bridgestone to Increase Prices in Japan

Bridgestone Corporation announced today that it will raise prices on 1 February 2007 for tyres, tubes and flaps sold in the replacement market in Japan. Prices for winter tyres will be increased on 1 April 2007. Specific price increases include 5.5 per cent for passenger car and light truck tyres, 8 per cent for truck and bus tyres, 10 per cent for construction vehicle tyres, 5.5 per cent for motorcycle tyres (excluding certain products) and 8 per cent for other kinds of tyres, and for tubes and flaps (excluding those for motorcycles).

Linglong Sets Itself Ambitious Goals

For a company like Shandong Linglong Rubber Co., Ltd. presence at the CITExpo is obligatory. In the past other major Chinese manufacturers like Giti Tire or Chengshan used the CITExpo for their purposes. This year Linglong was by far the biggest manufacturer exhibiting at the Shanghai tyre show with all the other tyre majors missing. For export manager Merry Wang this doens’t mean that Linglong has to act like its competitors. On the contrary: “We want to build a brand,” she says with self-confidence.

Toyo – Whatever The Weather

Whether it’s the wrong kind of leaves on the line, frozen pipes or frosted locks, traditionally the British have never prepared well for winter…and it shows. As the sage advice goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing. And whilst no sane person would brave the winter months in their summer shoes, we somehow expect our cars to.

Toyo representatives point to Scandinavian’s example of preparedness. With many countries enforcing fitment of winter tyres in appropriate months, the Scandinavian accident figures, or rather lack of them, speak for themselves. We’ve all seen cars beached by the roadside or sliding helplessly along a poorly cleared road – often with inevitable and expensive results.

Kraiburg Recommends Winter Tread Designs

The trend of changing to special winter tyres in the cold season is also increasing in the European commercial vehicle sector, according to Kraiburg Austria. According to demand from the retreading material supplier, it is not just the experienced winter users that now recognise the advantages of a powerful traction tyre, with which they can safely travel through deep snow. In addition to customers in the Alpine regions of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and even Scandinavia, the so-called “lowlanders” are changing more and more from all-season tyres to “genuine” winter tyres. One reason for this is the recent change in German law (StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations) § 2, para. 3a), which could put the insurance cover at risk or make it necessary to bear potential expenses, should the tyres be seen as the cause of accidents or traffic-jams when used under winter road conditions.

Continental CV Tyre Production Now Over 7 million Units

Continental AG is profiting from the growing demand for commercial vehicles. The international automotive supplier expects to achieve sales this year totalling nearly 2.0 billion euros in the commercial vehicle original equipment and replacement business. “We are counting on further growth in the coming year,” said Dr Hans-Joachim Nikolin. In the Commercial Vehicles Tires division, Continental’s capacity exceeded 7.0 million tyres this year. The plant in Puchov, Slovakia, and the Continental Sime Tyre operations in Malaysia have been expanded, and production got started in the new facility in Camaçari, Brazil.

Wintry Infinity

Infinity, the private brand label, has complemented its range of passenger car, van and 4×4 radial with 15 sizes of winter tyres. The tyres, produced for UK based Goldspark Trading Ltd by the Shandong Linglong Company in China, have been well-received throughout Europe in their first year of distribution.

Cooper and Avon Winter Tyres Join the Market

Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe launched its Weathermaster Snow winter tyre in May 2006 ready for the winter selling season. This T-speed rated tyre is available in 21 sizes, covering 13 – 160-inhc rim diameters. The broad range of sizes fit many small and medium cars from the new Peugeot 107 to Ford Focus and VW Golf.

Interstate Tires: The Ultimate Test

Where would you go for the ultimate in winter tyre testing? Somewhere that is hard to beat must be Kiruna, the northernmost city in Swedish Lapland, where temperatures of -35ºC are the norm. Kiruna is used for testing by car manufacturers such as Mercedes, SAAB and Volvo and it was the venue chosen by Interstate Tires for a week-long evaluation by selected dealers of its new winter tyre, the Arctic Claw. This was a trip with a difference; after a two-hour journey from Stockholm by dog sledge, the distributors arrived at their destination, the world-famous Icehotel in Jukkasjárvi, where the inside temperature was a comparatively balmy -6ºC!
