Pirelli Sottozero Helps Magazine Illustrate Winter Tyre Advantages

Pirelli’s Sottozero winter tyre has been used to show the advantages of fitting seasonal rubber in cold conditions in tests conducted by EVO magazine. The high performance cold weather tyre made an excellent case for fitting winter tyres when the temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius; EVO journalist Ollie Marriage's test which was conducted using two Jaguar XFRs, one with non-specialist tyres (Dunlop’s SP Sport Maxx, original equipment on the XFR, was used), the other with Sottozeros. The West Circuit at Bedford Autodrome was used as a testing track, with conditions including snow, slush and wet. The results published by EVO show that Pirelli’s Sottozero surpassed the standard summer rubber tyre in all comparisons of lap time, accelerative traction and 60-0mph braking.

Conti Voted ‘Best Brand’ in German Magazine Poll

For the third year in a row Continental has been voted the best tyre brand in a reader poll held by German based car enthusiast magazine Auto Zeitung. Last autumn more than 20,000 of the magazine’s readers voted upon a number of categories, including tyres, with the results published in the latest (4/2010) issue of the magazine.

Japanese Motorists “Highly Satisfied” with Eco-Tyres’ Green Credentials

Japanese motorists that drive cars fitted with ‘fuel-efficient’ replacement market tyres have indicated in the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2009 Japan Replacement Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study that they are “highly satisfied” with the contribution their tyres make to fuel economy. In Japan, fuel-efficient tyres have in recent times emerged as a major replacement market product category in addition to the traditional categories of sport, comfort/luxury and standard tyres.

Apollo Q3 Performance “Remarkable” – Kanwar

Apollo Tyres’ Onkar S Kanwar has called the company’s performance in the third quarter of the 2009-10 financial year a “remarkable performance”. The company chairman had ample ground for such praise – year-on-year net profit ballooned from Rs 89 million (₤1.2 million) to Rs 1.8 billion (₤24.4 million) on the back of a Rs 22.96 billion (₤311.0 million) net profit, an increase of 108 per cent from the third quarter of the 2008-09 financial year.

Hankook Tire Comments on Aromatic Oil Compliance

The European Union has legislated that, as of January 1, 2010, highly aromatic oils with a high polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content may no longer be utilised in tyres. In a note from its vice president of sales & marketing, H.S. Ahn, Hankook Tire Europe declares “all E-marked tyres sold by Hankook Tire Europe and its EU-based affiliates designated to be used on the territory of the European Union fully comply to this new EU-legislation.

Bridgestone UK Aiming for Top Positions in Every Segment

When he’s not taking responsibility of Bridgestone’s UK operations, managing director John McNaught’s remit also includes the Republic of Ireland and the Nordic markets of Denmark, Sweden and Finland. For the purposes of the exclusive interview given to Tyres & Accessories/tyrepress.com at the end of 2009 McNaught generally spoke in his UK capacity, however while the questions centred on the UK, the answers give an insight into the general thinking behind the company’s recent development. Delticom Reports Revenues of 310 million euros in Preliminary 2009 Results

Hanover-based Delticom AG has released preliminary 2009 financial results that show group revenue totalled 310 million euros, compared with 259 million euros in 2008. The growth realised (+20 per cent) was twice as strong as expected. Last year, 800,000 customers purchased tyres for the first time in one of the company's number of online shops, which includes mytyres.co.uk in the UK.

Tyrereviews.co.uk Addresses UK Winter Tyres “Misunderstanding”

Coinciding with the current UK obsession with snow and ice-covered roads, consumer-based interactive review website Tyrereviews.co.uk has published its seven reasons for the country’s drivers to consider fitting winter tyres in the colder months, regardless of whether the current extreme conditions – for Britain at least – are a sign of things to come. Starting with the concept that UK drivers misunderstand winter tyres, compared to their status as a “legal requirement in most of northern Europe”, the website substantiates why UK road-users should think about purchasing seasonal rubber in greater quantities than currently seen – estimates put the UK market for winter tyres way under 1 per cent. The relatively new Tyrereviews.co.uk says that it aims to give motorists “impartial feedback on road and track tyres” by allowing “the people that drive on the tyres every day” the opportunity to review them.

Analysts: US Replacement Tyre Market Recovering

In the US, RMA members reported that replacement tyre demand grew 9.3 per cent year-on-year in December 2009, from a drop of -16.0 per cent the year before. Financial analysts pointed out that the overall market volume grew 6.1 per cent, implying that domestic tyre manufacturers (namely Cooper Tire and Goodyear) continued to experience market share gains. The is believed to be a result of last year’s Chinese-made tyre tariffs as Chinese produced tyres reportedly occupied 16.6 per cent of the US market in 2008.

Mercedes-Benz Helping Customers Get to Grips With Winter Tyres

Mercedes-Benz is endorsing the benefits of cold weather tyres in the UK through a programme to promote the product through its retailers and official workshops. As Mike Belk, managing director for customer service at Mercedes-Benz UK explains, “Mercedes-Benz is committed to safety, and the safety benefits of using the correct tyre in adverse conditions are obvious, with years of evidence available in mainland Europe.” Retailers and workshops are stocking winter tyres for all models in the current Mercedes-Benz and smart range as well as older models.

Ocado to Outfit Fleet with Winter Tyres

Online grocer Ocado has decided to fit its entire 600 plus fleet of delivery vans with cold weather tyres. The company, launched in partnership with Waitrose in 2002 and delivering to an area covering more than 13.5 million households across the South Coast, South East, Midlands and North West, will now be equipped to handle its growing deliveries even when the mercury plunges. The cost of equipping the fleet with winter rubber is approximately £300,000.

Cold Weather Tyre Benefits Will Out-last the Snow

In the middle of the UK’s coldest winter for 30 years, industry association Tyresafe and tyre manufacturers and traders alike are pointing to the lasting benefits of driving on specialist cold weather tyres. The clear advice is that drivers who took the precaution of fitting cold weather tyres to their vehicle last autumn will continue to benefit from safer driving long after the current snow melts away. With more natural rubber in the tyre tread compound than standard ‘summer tyres’, they provide significantly shorter stopping distances in cold (under seven degrees celcius), wet and icy conditions.

“There is a misconception that cold weather tyres are not appropriate for drivers in the UK,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Cold weather tyres provide much better grip in both wet and dry conditions when the temperature falls below seven degrees, so they offer extra safety typically from October through to March. These tyres also have different tread patterns from ‘summer’ tyres making them more able to cope with snowy conditions. Those drivers who have chosen cold weather tyres will continue to benefit long after the current snow falls melt away.”

Snow and Ice “Good News” for Goodyear

This winter has brought the severest conditions experienced for some years, and this has been bad news for many UK motorists – but good news for Goodyear. The tyre maker reports its use of the snow and ice as a springboard to educate motorists on the importance of road and tyre safety. While gaining media interest in tyres is usually a challenge, Goodyear says that, with driving and safety at the top of the agenda, it has been provided with a “good opportunity”.

Canadian Study Finds Winter Tyre Users in Fewer Crashes

A 2009 government study of winter traffic accidents in Prince Edward Island found that only six per cent of the involved vehicles was fitted with winter tyres. But that apparently isn’t enough for the province’s transportation minister, who called the study “inconclusive” and says there is no reason to mandate winter tyre use as Quebec did in 2008.

Analysts Predict Strong Winter Tyre Season

Market analysts at Deutsche Bank are predicting that the European market is in the middle of experiencing a strong winter tyre season. After two weak years in Germany, 2009 was strong due to low dealer inventories and good winter conditions, the analysts point out. And if the second run of cold weather and snow affecting the UK and Europe at the moment is anything to go by 2010 is offering the right conditions for increased demand in this sector.
