Vauxhall backs Autosocks

Vauxhall has become the latest in a run of vehicle manufacturers to offers its customers winter traction advice, however while most vehicle main dealers who have take a public stance on this have promoted the benefits of winter tyres, Vauxhall appears to promoting the temporary AutoSock option. According to the company, Vauxhal retailers are once again offering “a comprehensive range of accessories in preparation for the winter months,” including AutoSock Snow Socks cold weather tyre covers.

RMI urges action on MOTs

"The motor industry is now in a vacuum which deters investment both in premises and employment. The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) urges Government to provide the industry with clarification of their intentions under the MOT review as soon as possible" said RMI chairman Colin Parlett, speaking at the RMI’s Annual Dinner, held at the Dorchester Hotel, Park Lane, London on October 20th.

Licence to fit, ProMOTe and winter tyres all figure in 2011 NTDA chairman’s speech

After announcing the winners of this year’s TAFF awards, the NTDA’s David White used his annual chairman’s speech – which has become a bit of a “state of the union”-esque moment for the UK business – to announce the news that the association has decided to make its REACT licence to fit qualification mandatory for members. According to the chairman, this decision was agreed in the association board meeting that preceded the evening dinner. However reporting always sits better in context, so here is an edited version of the complete speech for those that couldn’t make the event in person:

Citroën the next car manufacturer to offer winter tyre programme

On the same day as fellow French car manufacturer Peugeot, Citroën has launched its of a new Winter Tyre Programme. The programme includes a free winter vehicle check and storage for the summer tyres at an approved Tyre Hotel.

Peugeot UK launches winter tyre scheme

Peugeot UK has announced its own winter tyre scheme, following in the footsteps of other manufacturers, such as BMW, Suzuki and Volvo. The company’s new “swap and store” service being provided by dealers enables customers to equip their cars with four cold weather tyres and have their Summer ones placed in storage.

Michelin takes a fresh look at road safety with Primacy 3

When Michelin launches its Primacy 3 into European replacement markets in February 2012 the tyre will, the manufacturer states, open a “whole new era in road safety.” What Michelin means when making this assertion is that its successor to the Primacy HP has been developed based on research and behavioural analyses that revealed a number of unexpected safety-related facts. By taking a fresh look at accidentology – the study of accidents – Michelin says it has been able to move beyond preconceived safety ideas and provide road users with meaningful solutions.

Mytyres.co.uk warns of autumn “skidpans”

While many in the tyre business have been pursuing safety messages linked to the use of winter tyres, a theme of industry organisation TyreSafe’s Tyre Safety Month this October, the recent autumnal weather has led UK e-Tailer mytyres.co.uk to a more fundamental message about tread depth. The company – part of European online tyre retailer Delticom – says that heavy rain, gusty winds and falling leaves “can quickly turn a normal road or motorway into a hazardous skidpan”. It says that customers should consider minimum tread depths of 3mm for summer tyres and 4mm for winter tyres.

Delticom: 2011 financials ‘on track’

Delticom AG has published preliminary figures for the first nine months of the current year showing it increased revenues by 15.8 per cent to 297.7 million euros and pre-tax profits (EBIT) by 23.3 per cent to 28.2 million euros, despite the strong prior-year. Third quarter 2011 Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) improved by 51.5 per cent to 9.5 million euros (Q310: 6.3 million euros). This translates into an EBIT margin of 9.5 per cent up from 7.9 per cent in the comparable period last year. The company also confirmed anecdotal reports that early winter tyre sales have begun positively, saying: “[the] season has started off well.”

Winter tyres still overwhelmingly a minority purchase – survey

Quoting figures from a survey conducted by online research firm One Poll, Manheim Auctions notes than less than five per cent of British motorists plan on purchasing winter tyres this year. Out of the 3,000 respondents to the August 2011 survey, 95.5 per cent said they are not planning to buy winter tyres despite last year’s hard winter.

Illinois developer buys former Cooper plant

The shuttered Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. tyre plant in Albany, Georgia, has been sold to an Illinois developer, according to Tire Review. No details of how much was paid have yet been released.

Continental TS830P wins 2011 Auto Express winter tyre test

Continental has won the 2011 Auto Express winter tyre test, published this week (12 October). A parallel test in Auto Express’s high performance sister publication Evo awarded Continental top marks. In both titles, Continental's ContiWinterContact TS830P 91 H took the top spot in this year’s winter tyre awards.

Including a Continental summer tyre, which was used as a reference point, and a Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D that was curiously described as a “pre-production” product and was not rated, Auto Express tested 10 tyres. For reasons described above 8 were given ratings. Six were winter tyres, three all season and one summer. All were H – V rated 225/45 R17 sized products.

Just 0.7 per cent behind Continental’s winning score (100), second place was taken by Goodyear’s UltraGrip Performance 94 V. While no official mark was given, Auto Express explained that the Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D would have come third if it was not a “pre-production” model. As it happens Pirelli’s Sottozero Winter 240 Serie II took third place with a score of 98.9. Michelin’s Alpin 4 94V came fourth and scored 98.7.

BMW revises its winter tyre plans for 2011

BMW has revised its winter tyre programme following in its inaugural year in 2010. As well as offering a selection of winter wheel and tyre packages, BMW UK is offering to store and insure the spare set of summer wheels and tyres until they need to be changed again in spring for £30.

Strong winter tyre demand means shortage, despite increased production

Premium tyre manufacturers such as Continental AG are going to struggle to meet demand for replacement winter tyres stock this season, according to the latest research. Continental’s management, for example, said it has upped winter output this year, but it still won’t completely meet demand and therefore customers may still face shortages of certain sizes. But, speaking off the record, representatives of other leading tyre manufacturers have said much the same thing.

Suzuki now offering winter tyre programme

Suzuki has joined the growing ranks of tyre dealers and more recently car dealerships offering a winter tyre programme. Michael-Le Flay, Suzuki’s aftersales marketing manager, explained: "Many people are unaware of the fact that when temperatures drop below 7 degrees Celsius, the rubber in standard tyres becomes harder and less flexible, which affects braking and cornering performance.

Goodgrip.co.uk to compete for UK e-tail business, winter tyres

On 18 October 2011 Goodgrip.co.uk will weigh into the UK online tyre and wheel retail business. Goodgrip.co.uk is the UK name for Nordic firm Bythjul Norden AB, which is purportedly one of the largest online tyre retailers in Europe. The company reports that it will offer the UK motorist an “unrivalled range of products, level of experience and competitive pricing.”
