Charity-minded Dealer Finds Formula for Success

First Stop dealer, Steve Andrews, has discovered a new winning formula after using a race-ready Williams racing car to impress visitors at a local festival. Andrews, owner of Steve Andrews Tyres, St Austell, booked the car, used during last year’s Formula One World Championship, as a showpiece for an evening of live music and fireworks at the Charlestown Regatta in Cornwall. And it certainly made an impact, attracting huge crowds and helping to raise more than £1,200 for local causes.

Shredders to Ban Used Tyres

The 16 member companies of the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) are to ban tyres from their feedstock, the BMRA has announced. The ban will come into force on 7 July. The announcements leaves question marks over where vehicle dismantlers who do not have tyre recovery arrangements will dispose of their tyres. Up till now the BMRA had recommended a charge of £1.50 for each tyre delivered.

Goodyear Directors Re-Elected at 2006 Annual Meeting

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company shareholders have re-elected James C. Boland, Steven A. Minter, Michael R. Wessel, John G. Breen and William J. Hudson, Jr. to the company’s Board of Directors.

In other business, shareholders passed a proposal requiring the annual election of directors. In connection with that proposal, the terms of all of the company’s directors will expire at the 2007 annual meeting.

The Name’s Martin – Aston Martin

The new James Bond movie, Casino Royale, is eagerly-awaited by fans keen to check out the stunts, the Bond girls and of course to see how Daniel Craig handles himself as the new James Bond. However, for a number in the audience, it will, once again be the hero’s choice of car that catches the eye. It’s an obsession that Richard Stewart Williams understands.

Richard just loves Aston Martins – in fact, there’s nothing he doesn’t know about them. He began work as an Aston Martin apprentice and for over thirty years has run his own highly successful company, Richard Stewart Williams Ltd in Cobham, Surrey, where his team service, sell and race the iconic cars.

Leno to Headline SEMA Banquet

(Akron/Tire Review) SEMA has announced that car junkie and “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno will perform at the 2005 SEMA Industry Awards Banquet, on the 3 November, alongside the forthcoming SEMA Show. The banquet will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton Center.

Leno has been a frequent SEMA Show visitor and has exhibited his own cars at the event. “SEMA has had the pleasure of displaying some of Jay’s extensive car collection in the past, now we are fortunate enough to have his extensive talent at the awards banquet,” said Mitch Williams, SEMA’s incoming chairman of the board. Tickets for general attendees will become available after 15 August on a first come, first serve basis.

Michelin to Exploit F1 Advantage

Williams and Michelin are working to “exploit” their advantage having experienced “minimal” tyre wear in the opening three races of the season, reports Planet F1.

The team spent three days testing at Barcelona where they covered a total of 533 laps. “We worked through a comprehensive test on tyre compounds, aerodynamic parts, traction control and general set-up,” technical director Sam Michael said. “The tyre wear that we have is far from the limit, as it has been in the first three races with the FW27, and we are working with Michelin to exploit this further.”

ATS Euromaster Wins £1 Million Contract

ATS Euromaster has made a tyre management service contract worth approximately £1 million with Days Contract Hire. The 8000 strong fleet of cars and LCVs will be supported by ATS Euromaster’s “Euromaster Car” online authorisation system, and a mobile fitting service.

“We considered various types of tyre fast fit companies and decided to go with ATS Euromaster because they offered a competitive price and because their tyre expenditure would be managed more efficiently from headquarters in Aston, through their central invoicing system,” commented Aled Williams, general manager at Days Contract Hire.

Group Tyre Moves Into Fleet Market

Group Tyre (UK) Ltd has acquired the majority shareholding in fleettyreline Ltd, the only fleet company dealing solely with motor dealerships. The company will continue to operate under its own name, with founders Dean and Liz Williams continuing to play a leading role. The management team is strengthened by new director of sales, Martin Heath, who joins the company from Fit4Fleet. Group Tyre chairman John Church described the acquisition as “a perfect fit,” adding: “Group Tyre can offer a total and all-encompassing range of services to the motor dealer market, including authorised tyre fitting to fleet cars. This market is set to grow, believes Group Tyre, as the duty of care demanded of leasing companies becomes more significant.”

Bridgestone Looks Forward to Next Season

As supplier to both champion and more run-of-the-mill teams, Bridgestone is in an unusual position. The Bridgestone shod Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello may be perpetually on the podium, but Jordan and Minardi ‘s drivers are a long way off. Michelin, on the other hand, seems to supply everybody in between including race contenders.
Bridgestone’s, technical director, Hisao Suganuma, admitted to F1racing.net that only having Ferrari and Jordan and Minardi is disadvantage. “With the new regulations, we have to do a lot of testing. Next year we cannot change tyres in the race anymore, so we have to make a different type of tyre. We need to do a lot of long distance runs and that is difficult. Sauber went to our competitor Michelin, but we have to live with that.”

Meanwhile, Ferrari has a new test driver in Marc Gené who previously worked for Williams and therefore with Michelin tyres. Mr Suganuma is keen to hear about some of Michelin’s secrets. “We really are looking forward to our chat. I am not sure if [Marc Gené] will tell us everything he knows about Michelin, but of course I am hoping he will,” Mr Suganuma told the website.

Schumacher and Bridgestone Take ‘Home’ Grand Prix

After fears that a so-called super typhoon would halt the Japanese Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher has won his 13th race of the season. The fact that qualification was more than a little disrupted by an “undriveably” wet track only meant that more emphasis was put on tyres. After the first ever Sunday morning qualification, Michael Schumacher’s Bridgestone equipped Ferrari blew away the opposition.

Williams’ Ralph Schumacher took second place, with Britain’s Jenson Button taking the third podium spot. According to Button: “I went for the two stops because it worked pretty well for me in the last race.” Michelin drivers took the majority of the other point scoring positions.

When the reigning world champion was asked what it felt like to back in winning form, having set a new record for the number of wins in a season, the Ferrari driver commented: “Yeah. It is obviously nice, for other reasons, particularly that it is Bridgestone’s home Grand Prix and we wished to do well for them and we did. We did very superb in being basically fastest all weekend and finally get the win and it is the way to pay back something to our partners.”

Mobile Tyre Fitters Meet Royalty

Prince Charles recently visited Darren Williams Tyre and Auto Care Services in Scotland as part of the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT).

Mr Williams set up his own mobile tyre-fitting firm in 2001 with the help of PSYBT, and has since grown from a one man tyre fitting operation to servicing the domestic, haulage and agricultural sectors. The dealership, which is part of the RH Claydon network, won the regional final of the PSYBT Business Awards in 2003 and later went on to win the runner-up prize in the national finals.

Pirelli Supports Russia

Two Pirelli employees based in Burton on Trent have been busy organising a company collection for the victims and families of the Beslan school atrocity. Clare Crighton and Hannah Williams collected in excess of £400.00 in a day. Clare Crighton: “We were extremely touched by everyone’s generosity and how this tragedy has touched everyone”.

Three Sets of Tyres for a Formula One weekend?

The online service “f1total.com” has reported that as of next season Formula One drivers will no longer be allowed to use more than three sets of tyres per racing weekend. It has also said, that both the qualifying heat and the race would then have to be performed on the same set of tyres.

The reduced grip of the tyres, a result of these measures, is expected to lead to an increased number of driving faults and longer braking distances. On top of this if drivers are prevented from changing their tyres during pit stops, the number of take-over manoeuvres could increase.

“Currently, when a driver re-enters the track after a pit stop the higher grip of his new tyres guarantee that he – although sitting in a heavier car after refuelling – can keep his competitors behind him. With a heavier car and worn tyres this will be much more difficult,” said Sam Michael, technical director of the BMW Williams Formula One team, quoted by “f1total.”

Goodyear Re-elects Directors

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s shareholders have re-elected Robert J Keegan, Rodney O’Neal and Shirley D Peterson to serve as company directors for a further three years. John G Breen was elected to serve for the final year of a three-year term on the board.
