Growth Continues in Many 4×4 Tyre Areas, says MTS/Southam

Micheldever/Southam reports having distributed three quarters of a million 4×4 tyres in the UK tyre market in 2008, a figure they say possibly makes the company the largest distributor of 4×4 tyres in Europe. Still the only UK wholesaler to operate a specialist 4×4 division (which is based at Southam), the MTS group offers next/same day delivery nationwide on all major brands including every OE fitment, a comprehensive range of quality budget 4×4 tyres from Enduro, and the market leading mid-range replacement brands including BFGoodrich, General, Kumho, Falken, Insa Turbo and Toyo.

EW Swiers & R Grainger See Demand Increase

Tyre recycling’s growth is illustrated by the story of a relatively new company’s plans to expand its operation with a new pre-shredder. The father-daughter partnership of EW Swiers & R Grainger Tyre Disposal and Rubber Chip, started early last year when they set up a tyre shredding facility at Ruffort, on the outskirts of York, North Yorkshire. A year ago, the company took delivery of a shredder to produce 20mm chips, stripping out the wire, for the Equine Market. Within the year the company has met 80 per cent of its targets.

Swiers comments “We feel we were getting positive signals of increased demand about 12–14 weeks ago, so we ordered an additional pre-shredder from New Zealand that will increase our throughput three fold, thus meeting our current demand for the Equine Market.”

E.G. Wholesale “Showing the Future of Wholesaling”

Horsham-based tyre business E.G. Wholesale (part of Elite Garages) has opened a new state of the art tyre warehouse and logistics operation in the West Sussex town. It will supply all its tyre customers across the south east. The operation was formally opened in December 2008 by Mark Brickhill, managing director of Goodyear Dunlop (UK). Brickhill stated, “Goodyear Dunlop are pleased to be associated with E.G. Wholesale who are certainly showing the future direction of tyre wholesaling.”

The new facility carries approximately 40,000 tyres on the shelf and – together with its two existing bulk tyre warehouses – offers one of the largest stocks and range of tyres in the South East. The company operates a fleet of 25 vans to cover its delivery area, which spreads from Bournemouth in Dorset to Ashford in Kent. All vans have satellite tracking systems to ensure timing and accuracy of delivery.

Bike Tyrestore Receives Expo Merit Recognition

Bike Tyrestore, one of the UK’s leading motorcycle tyre wholesale operations, received a merit award in the British Dealer News 2009 reader survey. Bike Tyrestore was again nominated in the “Best Trade Service” category, having won the trophy outright last year. Bike Tyrestore MD, Peter Smith, commented: “It’s very unusual for any company to receive an award in the same business area two years running, so we’re very pleased that the BDN readership enjoy dealing with us so much that they rewarded us again in 2009.”

Bike Tyrestore received the merit award on the opening day of the Motorcycle Trade Expo at the NEC in January, where the company had a centrally positioned stand. The wholesaler’s booth focused on Enhanced “B2B” services, which already account for roughly a third of the company’s sales, iconic” bikes and “freebies” galore.

TWG: 1H 2008 a Record Year for UK Tyre Wholesalers…

When the NTDA’s increasingly Influential Tyre Wholesalers’ Group (TWG) met for its annual lunch in November, the event brought with it news of import quality checks, an update on the current market situation and a polite request for not manufacturers to take advantage of the UK’s detached geographical position when it comes to pricing.

However, in his role as chairman, Ashley Croft began by giving the audience representing the majority of leading manufacturers and wholesalers an overview of how the economic climate is affecting tyre wholesale markets:

AF Blakemore Chooses Pirelli Truck Tyres

AF Blakemore and Son Ltd has decided to switch tyre suppliers to Pirelli Truck Tyres. Blakemore’s Wholesale, Food Service and Spar Distribution Divisions currently deliver to over 5,255 outlets with a fleet of 350 vehicles ranging from 3.5 to 44 tonnes.

UK Batteries: No Wholesale Price Reduction

Despite falling commodity and metal prices, UK Batteries has warned the aftermarket that there won’t be a wholesale reduction in unit prices. While it is true that the price of batteries is strongly influenced by the London Metal Exchange (LME) and LME came down in July, August and September, at the same time the value of pounds sterling against the US dollar meant battery prices have still been affected.

“Some of our customers will look at activity on the LME and when they see this reduction in the price of lead, they will assume there is going to be an automatic price drop,” explained UK Batteries’ marketing and communications director, Neil Warren. “But it’s not quite as simple as that. There are a number of other factors that have to be taken into account and the market needs to be fully aware of them. The poor performance of the pound against other currencies is strongly affecting the situation and also distributors like us work to a two to three-month lead time when stockholding batteries for the winter months.”

Micheldever Promotes Carter and Burgess

Paul Carter has been appointed to the position of national and key accounts sales manager within Micheldever’s wholesale division. Carter, who Micheldever managers described as “a key element” in MTS wholesale’s growth,” joined the company when it acquired Southam tyres in 2001. Jason Burgess (who joined Micheldever as Kumho Brand manager earlier this year) will also be joining the MTS Wholesale senior management team as national field sales manager.

Paul Carter will now take on direct responsibility for all of Micheldever’s national and key accounts, a new high level role within the senior management structure of MTS wholesale division. Previously his responsibilities included management of the Field Sales Team, and satellite sales offices.

Grouptyre Competition Winners Visit Ford Rally Aces

The two-month Pirelli promotion on wholesaler, Grouptyre’s website successfully boosted sales of Pirelli car, van and 4×4 tyres in the independent and garage sector by 10.7 per cent compared with the previous average sales of participating dealers. It was the first in a series of national incentives and exclusive promotions the wholesaler aims to run in conjunction with premium brand tyre manufacturers. In addition, the company – in conjunction with the Italian premium manufacturer – sent an independent retail manager to the World Rally Championship in Spain, allowed an auto-services site owner to send his sons to Oxfordshire for the Pirelli Driving Experience and gave the proprietor of an exhausts and tyre centre a Pirelli track day to enjoy with his son.

Aaron Bothamley, manager of Fairway Tyre and Auto Services in Rickmansworth, was delighted to win an all expenses paid trip to the WRC Rally of Spain in the promotion. Bothamley, accompanied by his brother-in-law Paul, joined a dawn VIP helicopter trip to familiarise themselves with the sweeping asphalt roads of stage one before moving on to the third stage, where they watched defending World Rally Champion and current Championship leader Sebastien Loeb and BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala demonstrate their skills. Then it was on to the service area for lunch with team principal Malcolm Wilson and the drivers.

Micheldever Group Climbs the Sunday Times Corporate League Table

Micheldever, the UK’s largest independent tyre wholesaler, distributor and retailer, has jumped 49 places to 154th position in the annual Sunday Times HSBC Top Track 250 league table of the best performing mid-market private companies, after achieving annual sales total of more than £224 million in the last financial year, an increase of almost 33 per cent on the previous year’s performance. According to Micheldever, it is only tyre firm to appear in this year’s list.

Grouptyre Improves Wales and the South West Tyre Distribution

Grouptyre has expanded its Wales and South West tyre distribution service through the expansion of member company King David Tyres. The new additional distribution centres will be place in St. Clears, near Carmarthen, and St. Austell, Cornwall to provide multiple same-day deliveries within the South Wales M4 corridor and the valleys and throughout Cornwall.

King David Tyres is a family-owned business established over 30 years and operates retail and wholesale depots in various locations in South Wales, Devon and Cornwall. It serves a large territory incorporating Devon, Cornwall, Avon, Bristol, Somerset, Mid Wales and South Wales, as well as parts of Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Australian Goodyear Dunlop Distributor Renews Supply Contract

Supply chain management specialist Ceva Logistics has in Australia renewed its national distribution contract with South Pacific Tyres, a move that should consolidate the tyre distributor’s supply chain operations. Ceva provides warehousing, transport and logistics services to the operator of the Beaurepaires, Goodyear Autocare and Dunlop Super Dealer retail channels and distributor of the Goodyear and Dunlop passenger and commercial tyre brands.

Stapleton’s to Buy Central Tyre

Stapleton’s (Tyre Services) Limited has agreed to buy 56 Central Tyre stores from Pirelli UK Limited. The deal, with a price-tag to be determined when the transfer of Central’s properties is completed, sees the tyre retailer and distributor expand its retail operation from 45 stores to a new total of 101 throughout the UK. The proposed transaction includes both retail and commercial tyre fitting outlets and the existing Central Tyre workforce is expected to transfer across to Stapleton’s upon completion of the sale. Initially Stapleton’s plans to concentrate on integrating the new stores into its network, meaning the company will be responsible for STS Tyre Pros, STS Tyre & Exhaust and now Central Tyre-branded outlets. It is not clear if and how this might change in the future.

Tireco Sues Canadian Distributors

Importer Tireco has filed suit against two Canadian firms alleging they infringed on Tireco’s distribution deal with Taiwan’s Nankang Rubber Tire Co. Tireco named Fastco Cananda and YHI Canada Inc. in the suit, claiming the two “intentionally” purchased and sold “Nankang-made products in Tireco’s exclusive territory.” Tireco claims it “has an exclusive distribution agreement with Nankang Rubber Tire Company for all Nankang-made products that covers the United States, Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. territories.” The suits were filed separately in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. In the suits, Tireco seeks injunctive relief and punitive damages.

Tireco said it has previously had “other successful lawsuits filed in the United States against unauthorized distributors including Turbo Wholesale Tires Inc., Zisser Tire Company, and Sentaida International.” In a statement, Tireco General Counsel Tom Mills said: “We want the industry to be on clear notice: we are the exclusive distributor in North America for Nankang-made products. If you purchase Nankang-made product from someone other than Tireco and their authorized dealers and sell that product in North America, you will be sued. We will continue to aggressively enforce our exclusive distribution rights to protect our dealers and the integrity of the Nankang brand.” (Tire Review/Akron)
