Watts ‘Integrates’ Trelleborg’s French Industrial Tyre Distribution

Trelleborg Industrial Tires Europe has appointed Watts Tyre Group as the sole distributor of its industrial tyres range in France. Under the terms of the new agreement, Trelleborg Industrial Tires Europe will transfer its France-based industrial tyre operations to Watts Tyre Group. As a result of the deal, Watts will formally divide its French operations into a wholesale distribution business and a specialist service operation. The service business, which is reputed to be the largest in France, will trade under the Interfit name. Observers suggest that, together with the Trelleborg distribution agreement, this will help differentiate Watts service and distribution operations and therefore help strengthen the service propostion.

According to Trelleborg, the new strategy will yield “overall advantages to the French customers.” For its part, Watts’ official statement on the matter said: “Watts will integrate Trelleborg’s industrial tyres activities with their own and will now distribute Trelleborg tyre products alongside the Watts product range.”

Signal Extraprise Opens New Europe Office

Last month tyre and aftermarket systems supplier Signal Extraprise opened a European office with the UK and Irish markets the primary focus. Since 1992 Signal Extraprise has developed information systems that support tyre outlets and auto service centres across North America.

In 2006, Signal reportedly set out to create a revolutionary product, targeting all tyre and vehicle-servicing enterprises in the automotive aftermarket. That work culminated in 2009 with the launch of eXceed an offering designed to help service providers to remake their businesses based on the very different marketplace they face now. Instead of, for example, focusing on the mechanics of ordering, quoting, work orders and the like (which are all still important and included), Signal built a technology to help the dealers transform their stores into engines of growth and profitability.

Hawleys Tyres to Celebrate Centenary in 2010

Following Hawleys Tyres Ltd’s winning of the oldest tyre dealer in Britain title, Tyres & Accessories/tyrepress.com has compiled this overview of the company’s extensive history: Hawleys Tyres was formed by Ernest Hawley, a taxi driver who established the business by selling tyres to other taxi drivers in the area in 1910. The business grew gradually as vehicle take-up increased, before Ernest’s son Reg Hawley took over during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. During this period more depots were opened before Reg's sons David and Martin expanded the business in the 1970s. The company is now managed by Martin Hawley, his son Simon and David’s son Tim. The business employs 50 people at five branches in and around Sheffield.

According to company literature, Ernest always had an interest in motorcars, and was one of the few who pioneered motoring in its earliest days. A foreman engineer at Oughtibridge Silica Works by profession, his links with the tyre trade began when he started a motor taxi service from outside a shop that the family owned in Wadsley Lane, in the Owlerton district of Sheffield. The taxi side of the business thrived and Hawley became known for doing a lot of his own repairs. This includes the mending of punctures, which were numerous in the early days, and the fitting of new tyres he obtained. The tyre business began when car owners came to him for help with punctures and even brought tyres bought elsewhere to him for fitting.

Grouptyre Announces Federal Promotion Red Letter Winners

US Court Orders Review of China OTR, Ag Tyre Duties

Several media sources are now reporting that last year’s ruling by the US Department of Commerce that slapped often huge antidumping duties on certain OTR and farm tyres imported from China will get another look. On September 18, the US Court of International Trade ordered the Commerce Department to review its ruling and the countervailing duties it applied to a host of tires imported from China. The court said the Commerce Department’s duty calculations were in error, and in cases were effectively double what they should have been. The court gave the Commerce Department 90 days to clear up the duty discrepancies. Tyres & Accessories/tyrepress.com first reported this story on 25 September, but following the collapse of GPX International last week US-based Tire Review draws a parallel between the two stories.

Grouptyre/Pirelli promotion winners get close to rally action

“Brilliant, awesome, it was a trip you could never pay to organise for yourself,” was how Martin Thomas, owner of Halesworth Tyre and Exhaust in Halesworth, Suffolk, described a recent trip to the World Rally Championships. Thomas and his wife Lisa were VIP guests at the Rally of Spain (October 1-3) after winning the top prize in a national promotion organised by Grouptyre, the UK’s leading independent wholesaler, and premium tyre manufacturer Pirelli. The Grouptyre/Pirelli incentive ran from 1 May to 30 June. For every Pirelli car, van and 4×4 tyre that independent tyre retailers bought during the promotion period, they were credited with an entry into a draw, the top prize of which was the Spanish rally excursion.

Wincanton Establishing Direct Imports Capability for Micheldever

Micheldever Tyres has appointed logistics services provider Wincanton Plc to set up a direct import and trunking solution for the business. This arrangement will see a portion of an existing Wincanton site in Kettering, Northamptonshire set aside as a ‘direct import centre’ for Micheldever. From here more than 50,000 tyres will be shipped to wholesale distribution centres throughout the UK, which in turn will supply 22 per cent of the national tyre market. According to Wincanton, the new solution will reduce lead-times onto site following arrival at the port plus reduce product movement and handling across the network.

Aufine Presents an Extended Truck Tyre Range

Ever since the Aufine Group owned factory in Dongying, Shandong Province entered operation in 1986, it has specialised in truck tyres. Nevertheless, the company has considered broadening its range. As general manager David Sun explained during the CITExpo exhibition, Aufine – whose name was chosen due to its phonic similarity to the words “all fine” – has recently mulled over the idea of a passenger car tyre factory. According to Sun, Aufine calculates an RMB 700 million investment (£63.6 million) is required to establish a planned factory capable of producing five million passenger car tyres per year. These plans, admittedly, have been laid on ice indefinitely due to the global recession. If and when the Aufine Group finally presses ahead is a decision heavily dependent upon the future development of global markets, not least the US market. Should the decision be made to press ahead with the new factory, the company’s aim is to produce “high quality tyres in China,” David Sun emphasises.

North Eastern Tyre & Exhausts to Turnover £52 million in 2009

After achieving sales of £43 million in full-year 2008 results, North Eastern Tyre & Exhausts (NETE) is on track to achieve a £52 million turnover in 2009. A significant part of this growth can be put down the company’s purchase of 15 HiQ centres late last year in a move that saw the company’s retail footprint grow from eight to 23 depots overnight.

The NETE-owned HiQ stores are now benefiting from a two-year programme of investment, refurbishment and development, with a £2 million rebuild of the Leeds store. Local news reports said the Leeds HiQ store will now “set the new industry standard for Fast Fit centres with a state of the art workshop and customer waiting environment” when it opens its doors to the public on 1 December.

Stapleton’s Reviews “Extremely Positive” Year

Stapleton’s says that, despite the current economic climate, sales have been “performing well” over the past twelve months, reaching levels similar to those in 2008, and that it feels well-placed to take advantage of the current growth in the replacement tyre market. That the wholesaler has seen its private and exclusive brands – which include Primewell, Matador, Prestivo and Nexen – growing is perhaps unsurprising due to current market conditions, though Stapleton’s is keen to show that the programmes available alongside these labels are to some extent also responsible for their rise. “All of these ranges are offered with attractive dealer support packages to reward valued loyalty,” the company states. It also stocks all the major names.

Tyrespot Congratulates its Drivers on NVQ Success

Tyrespot has announced that al all of the company’s drivers “sailed through their level two NVQ” qualifications. Each member of staff successfully passed the seven modules on topics including contributing to effective working relationships; maintaining the safety and the security of the load, self and property; contributing to the provision of customer services; completing pre-journey and post-journey procedures; planning the route and timings for the delivery and collection of loads; transport goods and materials; and handling goods and materials. Congratulating them on their success, Tyrespot wholesale director Alan Tippin said he is “proud of every member of staff for passing these seven points.”
