Van den Ban – Taking a ‘Hands Off’ Approach

When Tyres & Accessories last visited Van den Ban Autobanden in April 2008, the company’s new warehouse facility was arising from a 24.000 square metre greenfield site on outskirts of the Dutch town of Hellevoetsluis. Even then the scale of the project, intended to consolidate the wholesaler’s two storage facilities into a single location, was evident. A key component of the project remained under wraps at this time, however, and therefore a second visit to the completed warehouse was necessary. What T&A saw upon its return to Van den Ban in Hellevoetsluis early in 2010 was impressive, to say the least.

Was Winter of Discontent Good News for 4×4 Market?

With the economy limping out of recession and the cold snap over (for now), is the 4×4 tyre market entering a spring season of its own? Some industry observers think so. They suggest that the combination of the UK’s obsession with the weather and our love affair with the underdog has prepared the way for an unlikely saviour to the depressed motor industry – the so-called gas-guzzling 4×4. And this could inevitably mean more growth for a tyre market segment that has continued expansion seemingly against the odds.

Two New Private Brands Boost Stapleton’s Range

Stapleton’s Tyre Services, one of the largest distributors of passenger car tyres in the UK, reports offering one of the largest selections of private and exclusive brands out of any distributor, and furthermore says it has a product suitable for every retailer and in every price bracket. The company recently added two new exclusive brands – Matador, a mid-range brand produced by Continental, and Primewell, manufactured by GiTi. Stapleton’s is also backing both up with dealer support packages to reward valued loyalty.

Hammond Group Manager Wins Red Letter Day

Hammond Group’s tyre department manager Keith Manders is taking his wife on a shopping spree after winning a £500 Red Letter Day experience in the national promotion organised by Grouptyre, the UK’s leading independent tyre wholesaler and exclusive UK distributor Federal. Having signed up to take part in the promotion and purchased Federal tyres during the second phase, Hammond Tyres automatically received entries into the prize draw based on the tyres purchased.

Bush Tyres Opens Second Retail Centre in Spalding

Tyre retail group BA Bush & Son and its wholesale arm B.A.B. Distribution has acquired the former Enterprise Tyres in Spalding. The move means that the family-owned business – which is a member of Grouptyre – now operates from two prime sites in the town, while it has increased its network of retail depots throughout Lincolnshire, Humberside and East Yorkshire to 16.

Cambrian’s Bicycle Division Relocates, Reports 30% Increases in Conti Sales

Cambrian Tyres has reported a healthy growth in sales of its sole bicycle tyre brand Continental. With year on year unit increases of 30 per cent since 2007, Cambrian reports it is now selling four times as many Continental tyre units as it was in 2000. “Not only tyres, but our tube business has also seen a dramatic rise as we’ve strived to make the Continental brand more attractive both in terms of margin and depth of range,” commented Cambrian’s bicycle brand manager Shelley Childs.

Federal SS 595 Racing Tyre Offered By Van den Ban

Dutch tyre supplier Van den Ban has announced that it now offers the Federal semi-slick 595RS- Racing tyre, in addition to its portfolio of premium, exclusive, private and budget brands. “The quality of this tyres meets high standards and prices are more than competitive. It's a racing tyre to meet your need,” says Cyril Versteeg, commercial manager of Van den Ban Autobanden. The 595RS-R is available in 26 sizes from 195/50ZR15 up to 265/35ZZR18. Federal products have now part of Van den Ban's portfolio for 25 years, including its PCR, (ultra) high performance, 4×4/SUV, caravan, winter, light truck and van ranges.

Tyre Freight Rates: Navigating Stormy Waters

At the end of January certain shipping companies indicated that they are considering what is known as “super slow-steaming” on the Asia-Europe route. This news, which potentially extends the already long time it takes for Far Eastern tyres to go from “on the water” to “in the warehouse,” serves to highlight the complicated business of getting tyres produced on the other side of the world from A to B.

Micheldever/Southam Praises Tyre Suppliers’ Generosity

Micheldever Wholesale director Alan Baldwin praised the generosity of top tyre manufacturers for the “exceptional” prizes they donated for a charity auction in aid of Motor Neurone Disease Research on 29 January. Held at the world famous Butchers Arms Restaurant, the auction was in aid of a £1 million fund raising attempt by Simon Adams, a customer of Southam Tyres, who was sadly diagnosed with the terminal illness just before Christmas. Over £30,000 pounds was raised on the evening with Guests reportedly bidding into the thousands for prizes like a framed Man Utd shirt signed by all of last season’s Premiership winning side, Ferrari driving days, Goodwood festival of Speed tickets, British touring cars, sets of tyres, and many more items including a Formula 1 factory visit. Alan Baldwin said it was an incredible night, and paid special thanks to Bridgestone, Continental, Kumho, Toyo, Goodyear Dunlop, Pirelli, Michelin, General Tire and Manchester United FC.

NETE Driver "Student of the Year"

Sixty drivers for North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts (NETE) are celebrating achieving top marks in an accredited qualification. As part of its commitment to staff development, senior management at NETE invited the group to complete an NVQ Level 2 in Delivery and Carrying Goods. And, with a 100 per cent pass rate, every one of the 60 drivers who took part in the course, has good reason to celebrate – but perhaps none more so than Steve Martin, who, at an award ceremony recognising the achievements of Gateshead College students completing NVQs, was awarded Student of the Year in his category.

UK Tyre Recovery Sector Fights Illegal Operations, Slim Margins

After experiencing more than a year of general economic recession, the UK tyre recovery sector enters 2010 functioning at roughly full capacity, with around 500,000 tonnes of tyres being collected last year. This puts tonnages on a par with the latest complete data compiled by the Used Tyre Working Group in 2008. However, while the UK has managed to limp out of recession with tyre recovery tonnages generally intact, there are signs that the same market pressures that have put the squeeze on new tyre profit margins are putting pressures on the collection part of the tyre life cycle too; and that regulation-dodging is still a problem.

So, while its good that tonnages in 2009 were relatively stable, the bad news is that illegal tyre collection and disposal activities are rife. What’s worse is that they complexity of such schemes has developed to the point that the disruption caused by rogue “white van man” collectors is now at the bottom end of a wide spectrum. This means large scale scam disposal rings and – in some cases – even franchise operations that are in operation taking money from tyre dealers, but not properly fulfilling their duty of care obligations.

Following the launch of the Maxxis Rewards national promotion last year, which the tyre manufacturer says was “highly successful”, 2010’s prizes have been rolled out in conjunction with Grouptyre – the exclusive Maxxis distributor in the UK. The 2010 programme once again features a VIP trip as the main prize. Based on the volume of Maxxis car, van and 4×4 tyres they buy within the promotional period, the top 15 dealers will win a holiday in Shanghai, China’s largest city and the world’s largest cargo port, which will include an exclusive tour of the Maxxis factory in Kunshan.

Tyrespot Picks MAM

Tyrespot Ltd. is now using its Autopart management software to control its multi-branch tyre wholesale and retail autocentre operations. Tyrespot is a long established, well respected name among UK tyre independents. It is one of the country's leading regional distribution companies, with ten locations across northeast England. Its wholesale operation supplies tyres from a stock of over 60,000 as well as batteries and exhausts, via an express delivery service.

Alan Tippin, Director and General Manager at Tyrespot, says: "Our original aim was to convert our existing tyre trade system to a full on-line solution to give us better business control. Toyo Tires Agrees UK Distribution Terms with Micheldever and N.E. Wholesale

Toyo Tires has announced the agreement of distribution deals with Micheldever Tyre Services and N.E. Wholesale. The manufacturer says that the move is designed specifically to further assist its sales efforts in the UK for 2010 and beyond by increasing the presence of Toyo products among a wider number of UK tyre dealers. The deals are not exclusive brand arrangements with either distributor, but are designed to provide greater coverage for Toyo products. It says the deals will seek to present Toyo Tires in regions currently without Toyo dealers, with both Micheldever and N.E. Wholesale increasing the number of stocking points for the brand.
