Broadway Bought By Traxx Tyres

Less than two weeks after former Grouptyre member Broadway Tyres went into administration, new owner Traxx Tyres has announced its purchase of the company’s assets. Tyres & Accessories understands that Traxx Tyres, which is new to the UK market, is connected to successful tyre wholesaling in Australia. It is fair to say that Traxx has taken the British market by surprise with its first UK acquisition, reportedly outbidding competing offers for Broadway Tyres. Sources close to the negotiations told T&A that Broadway will not be a member of Grouptyre under its new ownership and that instead the national wholesale operation will be running its own logistics operation from High Wycombe in order to maintain continuity of supply to its customers and in competition with Traxx Tyres.

NETE Launches Wholesale Investment Plan

North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts has set aside £2 million for a two-year growth strategy centring on its wholesale division. As a first phase of this strategy the company has acquired a 69,000 square foot warehouse in Stockton for its NE Wholesale Operation. The storage site relies on 1400 stillages and three forklift trucks to manage its stock base of 100,000 of tyres, and next on the company’s agenda is to invest in state of the art automated technologies which will enable faster picking and stock optimisation.

Neil Schmid Appointed Kumho Brand Manager

Micheldever Tyre Services recently appointed Neil Schmid as its new Kumho brand manager. Having been with Micheldever for 15 years, Schmid has most recently worked as an area sales manager in the South West and will now take on the additional responsibility of marketing and developing the Kumho brand across the UK. According to the company, he has a wealth of experience in the tyre industry, having started work in his father’s garage at the age of 14. Neil Schmid has since worked in various different areas of the industry providing him with experience in fitting, fleet, retail and wholesale.

TWG sees Continuation of 2010 Trends into 2011

Yesterday saw the Tyre Wholesalers Group Annual Lunch held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull. At the event, TWG chair Ashley Croft reviewed the year in UK tyre wholesaling, saying that “TWG members are fortunate within the replacement side of our market to have enjoyed a year of consistent market size, although the busy first half of the year has been balanced by a quieter period following.” Croft also looked forward to 2011, in which he forecasted “a year of challenges” for TWG members, commented on the rising interest in winter – or cold weather – tyres in the UK and the long-term potential effects of a consistent, large seasonal market; the persistently low availability of product throughout the year; his concerns about tyre labelling; and the education of non-NTDA member retailers. Kirkby Tyres Offers Galaxy-brand Tyres to UK & Irish Market

Kirkby Tyres has announced that it is now offering the Galaxy and Primex tyre brands to the OE and replacement markets in the UK and Ireland. The range includes the popular Mighty Mow, Turf Special, Beefy Baby, Super Trencher and others, says the tyre wholesaler based in Speke. Alliance acquired the worldwide distribution rights to the Galaxy and Primex brands in December 2009, when it bought key GPX International Tire Corp assets. Trelleborg Wheel Systems had previously held the European distribution rights to the Galaxy brand, and had continued to supply European customers in the first quarter of 2010.

Broadway Tyres Enters Administration

High Wycombe-based wholesaler Broadway Tyres entered administration yesterday (4 November) after being officially declared insolvent the day before. The company is understood to have faced cashflow problems related to significant debts. Bearing in mind the fact that Broadway is a member of the 13-company Grouptyre operation, what affect is the move is likely to be on Grouptyre in general and Broadway’s customers in particular? A source close to Grouptyre told Tyres & Accessories that customers won’t notice any disruption in either service or supply as the collective is working closely with both Broadway and the administrators to ensure it is “business as usual” for customers. The source also suggested that Grouptyre will be continue to honour its supply agreements post-administration whatever the outcome of this period is.

NTDA Chairman: Labelling, Legislation and Technology are ‘Challenges to Conquer’

Shortly before the surreal comic quips of this year’s after dinner speaker (popular TV and Radio comedian Milton Jones), the hundreds of industry opinion makers gathered for the 2010 TAFF Awards and NTDA annual dinner heard the customary speech from association chairman David White. In it he succinctly observed recent changes in market condition and suggested that if the business is ready to embrace change with necessary attitude and enthusiasm “success will surely follow.”

Toyo Tires Enjoys “Successful” Goodwood Revival

Having attended Goodwood events in the past Toyo Tires has reported another “successful” year at the Goodwood Revival, at which it was the exclusive Tyre Partner for the first time. To mark the occasion, VIP Toyo customers previewed two brand new road tyres in the Proxes range, the ultra high performance Proxes T1 Sport and the Proxes C1S, tyres built for performance and ride comfort respectively. Both tyres will be made available from 2011. Toyo said that it was looking forward to continuing its deal with the event in 2011.

Stapleton’s: TAFF Award is Huge Vote of Confidence

Stapleton’s beat off stiff competition to be named as Tyre Wholesaler of the Year at the NTDA Tyre and Fast Fit Awards 2010, which was held at Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate alongside the Brityrex International exhibition in the Manchester Central conference centre on 6 October 2010. The title tops a positive year for the company, which has seen it acquire previously Pirelli-owned wholesale operation CPK and achieve total sales of over £300 million.

Grouptyre/Federal’s Red Letter Day Prizes still up for Grabs

The first of the new promotions by Grouptyre and its value brand Federal is nearing its conclusion, but the wholesaler says retailers still have time to sign up and win a Red Letter Day experience. Focussed on Federal high performance, light truck, 4×4 and SUV tyres, for which Grouptyre is the exclusive UK distributor, the 2010 incentive runs as two consecutive promotions that the company says have already attracted “a great deal of interest”.

NETA Supports Yorkshire Air Ambulance With Charity Efforts

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA), which provides a life saving emergency service to the five million people across the county, has today received a cheque at their base at Leeds Bradford Airport worth £1000 from Deborah Horton of North Eastern Tyre and Autocare (NETA). The cheque was handed over following a string of fundraising efforts undertaken by the vehicle care specialists.

Deborah Horton is area retail manager for NETA, which has seven retail centres, 15 HiQ Fast Fit centres operated under franchise, as well as five wholesale depots across the North East and Yorkshire. She explains why the charity is so close to NETA’s heart: “The YAA works across the entire region covering rural landscape, major cities as well as motorways and thanks to its rapid response to emergencies it is responsible for rescuing hundreds of lives, many of which are the result of road accidents.”

Micheldever Jumps to 90th in Sunday Times Top Track 250

Recent growth at the Micheldever Group has driven the firm up to 90th place in the prestigious Sunday Times Top Track 250 list of the most successful mid-market privately owned companies. With just the Top Track 100 of the biggest private companies in the UK above it, this puts progress in the business into context. Micheldever first entered the Sunday Times list in 2006 in 184th position and in the intervening three years has jumped an amazing 94 places with the group’s sales in the last financial year reaching over £275 million.

Viking International in "Efficiency Drive"; 24hr Facility to Open

Viking International’s group managing director Kevin Parker says that the company has “embarked on a period of change within Viking that is unparalleled in its history” during the last 12 months. Parker has implemented a number of initiatives designed to streamline efficiency and improve customer service. He is also the head of Viking’s sister company National Fleet and he believes the best way to drive the business forward includes the partnership of these companies, providing a more complete service to customers; this would include wholesale tyres and automotive parts alongside fleet solutions for dealers and independent partners.
