BERU Tyre Safety System Picks Up “Genius 2007” Safety Award

In April, Jürgen Brust, managing director of BERU Electronics GmbH, received the “Genius 2007” Allianz safety award for the Beru direct pressure monitoring Tyre Safety System (TSS) at a ceremony in Leipzig.
Allianz’s annual “Genius” award is designed to honour pioneering technical developments which have already been implemented in practice and which contribute to the creation of safer road traffic. With this award, the insurance company aims to motivate automotive manufacturers to install safety features such as the BERU tyre pressure control system into their vehicles.

At the award presentation, Dr. Karl-Walter Gutberlet, board member of Allianz, underlined this when he said: “The TSS does not only provide better safety in road traffic, but it also helps to minimise CO2 emissions.” Jürgen Brust responded: “For the engineers and development staff at BERU, the continuous optimisation of our direct pressure monitoring system remains a permanent challenge. The lasting success of the product is also shown by the fact that we have already introduced the third generation of the system.”

Hayes Lemmerz SA Earns Top Toyota Supplier Award

Hayes Lemmerz International’s aluminium wheel manufacturing facility in Alrode, South Africa has received Toyota South Africa Motors Ltd.’s highest level of recognition – the overall 2006 Supplier of the Year Award. In selecting Hayes Lemmerz for the award, Toyota South Africa cited the company for its continued high level of performance in all areas. In addition to the 2006 Supplier of the Year Award, Hayes Lemmerz received special recognition in the categories of Delivery and Quality Performance.

“We are honoured to be named a Supplier of the Year by this important customer,” said Trevor Volek, managing director of Hayes Lemmerz South Africa Operations. “Our highest priority is ensuring that our customers’ strict performance standards are met and exceeded.”

Repair Shop Licensing Legislation Introduced In Texas

(Akron/Tire Review) A bill requiring all automotive repair shops to be registered has been introduced in both the Texas state Senate and House of Representatives. The companion bills introduced are Senate Bill 1120 (introduced by Sen. John Carona (R-16th)) and House Bill 2211 (by Rep. Jim Murphy (R-133rd)).

Both bills are currently in committee.

If passed, the legislation will create a specific state commission, with a paid executive director, and 12-member automobile service and repair advisory board that will include representatives of the auto repair industry and consumers. The board will regulate proposed amendments and changes to the shop licensing requirements required by this legislation.

Japanese Retailer to Buy Bankrupt Strauss Chain

(Akron/Tire Review) Automotive News has reported that giant Japanese auto parts, tyres and wheels and vehicle service chain Autobacs Seven plans to buy bankrupt Strauss Discount Auto, based in New Jersey.

The deal is subject to bankruptcy court approval. Strauss has 91 locations in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York City.

Autobacs Seven currently operates some 500 outlets in Japan, Southeast Asia, China, France and the U.S., where is has a 35,000-square-foot mega-store in Stanton, California.

New Alloy Wheel Repair System Proving Successful

Yorkshire based Ayce Systems has seen sales of Wheelrite Pro, the company’s new all-in-one alloy wheel repair kit, grow dramatically since it was introduced last year. Managing Director Ron Rae puts the success down to the flexibility of the machine. “Unlike some systems on the market Wheelrite Pro uses automatic pneumatic clamping so that it can handle all designs of car and motorcycle wheels up to 20 inch diameter, with or without a central hole. Because of this adaptability it is proving particularly popular with independent repair workshops”, he enthused.

Alcoa Adds Dura-Bright to LT/SUV Lines

(Akron/Tire Review) Alcoa Forged Specialty Wheels has added the company’s Dura-Bright wheel technology to its line of aftermarket light truck/SUV wheels. Dura-Bright, already available on Alcoa aluminum medium truck wheels, is a surface treatment that helps maintain a wheel’s bright, like-new appearance.

According to Alcoa, the proprietary surface treatment penetrates and reacts with the aluminum thus becoming an integral part of the wheel, and resists peeling, cracking and corrosion.

New Website and Focus for Alcar

Following the success of last year’s end user advertising campaign with the BSA brand, Kent based wheel distributors Alcar Wheelright Ltd are focusing on their house brand Dotz during 2007. Having introduced seven new styles, including unveiling of the new ‘dull anodised’ finishes on its ‘Radium’ and ‘Roadster’ ranges, Alcar will embark on an end user and trade advertising campaign to push home the company’s re-focus on the Dotz brand. In addition to passenger car wheels, Dotz has released its first wheel dedicated purely to the SUV market. The ‘Omega’ is available only in a 22-inch size and Alcar report the wheel is already developing a lot of interest within the SUV market sector.

Adaptable Smart Repair

Yorkshire based smart repair supplier Ayce Systems is returning to Brityrex, and – thanks to the success it experienced at Brityrex 2005 – has doubled the size of its stand. Ayce will exhibit a cross section of products from its extensive range but the centrepiece will be their highly successful Wheelrite Pro, an all-in-one alloy wheel repair kit.

Unlike some systems on the market, Wheelrite Pro uses automatic pneumatic clamping, which Ayce reports can handle all designs of car and motorcycle wheels up to 22-inches in diameter, with or without a central hole. Because of this adaptability Ayce says the Wheelrite Pro is proving particularly popular with independent repair workshops.

Carlsson Launches 22-Inch SUV Alloy

German based specialist Carlsson has but one make of car in mind when designing a new alloy wheel, so it comes as no surprise that the company has become very good at what it does. From its headquarters in a sprawling estate once owned by an aristocratic horse breeder, the company strives to create what it calls individual cars for individualists and wheels that will create a completely new image for any Mercedes.

The newest addition to the Carlsson stable is the ‘2/11 Brilliant Edition,’ a lightweight 2-piece 22-inch wheel designed for the M and GL class 4×4 and R Class crossover “multi-activity vehicle.” Featuring an 11-spoke design and highly lustrous silver paint finish with a highly polished outer rim, the 2/11 Brilliant Edition creates a particularly energetic image when paired with low profile high-performance tyres while at the same time providing the required touch of elegance expected on a luxury vehicle. The appearance of the Carlsson wheel is distinctly different from the five-spoke variety fitted as original equipment to all three Mercedes-Benz models (and the seven-spoke factory option available on the R-Class) and offers customers an extra two inches diameter compared with the largest size factory fitted wheel.

MWS Enters ‘Seller’s Market’ in Europe

During 2006 Manchester-based MWS Distribution, which supplies the CV market through aftermarket and OEM divisions, launched into Europe with both its established steel range and new Xlite forged alloy products. Reckoning on the current demand for CV wheels trailing behind the rest of the market’s ability to supply, arising from Euro4 demand for new vehicles, managing director John Ellis has is forecasting an increase in sales from Europe up towards 2 million this year. This sales breakthrough came from marketing support with DTI’s Passport to Export, and recruitment since 2005 of French, German and Spanish speakers to the company’s sales staff.

Launching Xlite at last year’s Hanover IAA exhibition, MWS claims it has found OEMs seeking alternative sources for forged alloy wheels. First among these is France’s trailer manufacturer Benalu, which will be trialling Xlite on their new Siderale 78 trailer at Solutrans in Lyon (April 2007).

Elite Direct.Com Limited – Providing a Better Customer Experience

Elite has gone out of its to make the purchasing of wheels a pleasant experience. At its conveniently located 20,000 sq. ft premises on the A1306 near Rainham and Dagenham in Essex, the company not only has a large and well-appointed showroom open to the public, but also a waiting area complete with a café serving hot food and drinks – so waiting for a new set of wheels need not be a tedious event. And while the customer enjoys some refreshment their vehicle is seen to in one of Elite’s 19 fully operational service bays.

The large and modern facility Elite operates today is far removed from the company’s humble beginnings, when partners Steve Eldridge and Sean Soyka opened for business in 1987, operating out of a cramped former car showroom in Hornchurch, just a couple of miles from the company’s present position. Today the company specialises in wheels and tyres for passenger cars, 4×4 vehicles and light commercials, but also stocks exhausts, shock absorbers, suspension kits, and brakes amongst other items.

Top Marks for Conti Automotive in “Auto Motor und Sport” Brake Test

The top six vehicles in Auto Motor und Sport magazine’s 2006 brake test (published January 1/2007) are equipped with brake components and systems supplied by Continental Automotive Systems. Ten passenger cars and SUVs took part in the tests. Six of them were assessed overall as “good”.

Spoiled for Choice

Here in the UK buying a new set of alloys for your car is a much different experience than in many countries. A trip to the local tyre shop won’t usually result in a satisfied customer rolling home on the wheels of their dreams – very few tyre specialists also deal in alloy wheels, and those that do mostly have a limited range on offer. This means that the bulk of alloy wheel purchases in the UK are made through dedicated wheel suppliers, and these days that equates to two options – in person shopping or ordering online.

Larger stores, such as the deceptively named South West Tyres (they do sell tyres, but the company’s specialty is definitely their large range of alloy wheels), offer the advantage of having a wide selection of both leading brands and budget alloys on hand, so little is left to the customer’s imagination. And with in-store fitting bays, such as at South West Tyres’ 10,000 sq. ft. premises, wheels can be selected, purchased and fitted all in a single convenient procedure.

Variety Act

South Wales based manufacturer ACT Wheels started 2007 on a high in January when it clinched the contract to supply wheels to Stagecoach as part of the bus operator’s maintenance of its 7000-strong fleet.

ACT supplies steel wheels for HGV/PSV vehicles through to off-road, site and agricultural applications in a range of sizes from wheels to fit eight-inch mower and forklift trucks through to 35-inch earthmover wheels. The firm has CAD design and production capacity to meet the needs of OEMs and operators, meaning it can handle anything from one-off replacements and conversions to production batches.
