Trelleborg Publicises Agri, Forest, Industrial Unit Capabilities

Swedish manufacturer Trelleborg has released information on its Wheel Systems division, specifically publicising its dedicated larger rims Sävsjö facility in southern Sweden. As a supplier of complete agricultural, forestry and industrial wheels, the company deals with the specialised demands of these typically cumbersome tyres.

It is particularly important in this field that the wheels’ components work harmoniously with each other, as Per Valdmaa, managing director of the Sävsjö manufacturing plant states: “The rim plays a crucial role in the operation of the vehicle or equipment it is fitted on, securing and protecting the tyre. It carries the machine’s load and transfers its performance to the ground. The tyre and the rim are interdependent; the two cannot function without each other. If the rim breaks, the rubber of the tyre is destroyed and the machine they are fitted on will stop working.”

Evo Corse Release Dakar Land Rover Wheel into Aftermarket

Evo Corse has released its ‘Dakar’ wheel into the aftermarket. According to the company, the 16 x 7-inch wheel has also proven its worth on the Land Rovers of the British Army in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Each wheel is low pressure cast in a permanent steel mould from A356 Primary aluminium alloy, before being receiving a T6 heat treatment to avoid imperfections. The wheels are then CNC machined both front and rear to get the precise spoke profile and to eliminate any possible imbalance. The Dakar is specified up to a load index of 1500kg per corner, meaning that light armoured applications and full loads are both safely within Evo Corse’s stringent design criteria.

Avon Tyres Help Molyneux Win Manx TT

Isle of Man sidecar legend Dave Molyneux recently took his tally of Isle of Man TT victories to 14, with the assistance of some Avon tyres. Molyneux and passenger Daniel Sayle took Suzuki’s first three-wheeled victory ever on the Island. The victory on his A&J Racing Suzuki outfit also marked 20 years since Molyneux’s first sidecar victory on the island back in 1989.

The Manxman said: “The Avons worked brilliantly and were a pleasure to use. I was delighted to use Avons this year, as I’ve not used them since 1993 when I won on them. In fact my first race win at the TT in 1989 was on Avons too! The guys at BMTR put together the tyres and we picked some good compounds. It was a hard race, but we achieved what we set out to do. We had some trouble with the engine tuning but we ended up doing things ourselves, and it held together so it’s nice that we also managed to be the first bike to complete the race distance in under 59 minutes with laps over 115mph: we’re happy with that!”

Pelmar Delivering Right Mix of Product & Price

It doesn’t take an expert team of analysts to realise the tyre industry isn’t exactly awash with cash at the moment. Thus it is hardly surprising that sales of tyre building equipment have dropped off considerably. Yet one company whose business centres on the equipment used in tyre manufacture is bucking this trend – for Pelmar Engineering Ltd, a weak market equals strong sales.

The Israel based supplier of refurbished and pre-owned tyre industry machinery notes that while Pelmar is naturally successful in times of industry strength when many companies are expanding and instigating new projects, the prices it can offer enable Pelmar to also do well during periods of market contraction. This is perhaps to be expected when, as the company points out, the landed cost of pre-owned tyre building machinery is approximately a quarter of that for its new equivalent.

Hayes Lemmerz Bags New Production Contracts

New business agreements with a number of existing and new customers are being received with gratitude by a financially beleaguered Hayes Lemmerz International. On June 5 the company announced its Saraburi plant in Thailand will produce 16-inch alloy wheels for the Toyota Scion. This new award, Hayes Lemmerz notes, provides additional volume for the company, which is already a major supplier to Toyota in many parts in the world. In addition, the Thai plant has received new business awards to produce 14-inch alloy wheels for existing customer Nissan as well as 15-inch alloy wheels for a new customer, Nissan subsidiary Autech Japan, Inc.

Totrax Supplying Greckster Industrial Range

For the past three years Boston, Lincolnshire based Totrax Ltd has exclusively distributed the Emrald Greckster range of industrial tyres in the UK. Emrald Greckster, states Totrax’s Industrial business manager Peter Roffey, is India’s leading supplier of resilient tyres, industrial pneumatic and press on band. The Greckster, he continues, is constructed using a unique multi-layer concept that uses the mathematically derived BACUC02T Technology. The Greckster’s design features integrated layers of varying hardness; each of these layers is made to a different formulation, integrating the requisite special properties to the end product. Compounds and designs are carefully selected to meet the diverse requirements of tyres used under exacting work conditions.

Watts Tyre Group win Toyota Supplier of Year Award

UK based tyre and wheel producer Watts Tyre Group has been voted “Supplier of the Year” by Toyota Industrial Equipment SA (TIESA) at this year’s supplier conference held in Ancenis, France. This award is the highest accolade Toyota gives to its suppliers and is awarded on the basis of performance against TIESA’s key quality and delivery indicators.

This year also saw Watts awarded “Certified Supplier Status” for the third consecutive year, and the company notes that this honour reflects the exceptional quality performance that has been achieved over that time. Watts has been a significant supplier to TIESA since the factory opened in 1996, supplying tyres and wheels both individually and as complete tyre and wheel assemblies for Toyota lift trucks.

Gripen UK Enjoying ‘Month on Month’ Growth

Over on the other side of the North Sea lies the headquarters of one of the largest and fastest growing wholesalers in Scandinavia and Europe, Gripen Wheels. The Swedish based company delivers tyres to more than 20 countries and operates numerous warehouses throughout Europe. Some 18 months ago the UK joined the list of locations where Gripen boasts a presence, and the Cambridge headquartered operation now supplies customers nationwide from its warehouse in Immingham, near Hull. Tyres & Accessories recently spoke with Gripen’s UK director, Ray Coulson, to find out how the company is progressing in our market.

Audi Opts for Yokohama’s Advan on Q7

Audi’s list of requirements for its Q7 4×4 include a tyre capable of handling the vehicle’s considerable performance output. The manufacturer has thus decided upon the Yokohama Advan as original equipment on its first full-size, luxury SUV, and is offering the Advan in two sizes – 275/45R20 110Y or 265/50R19 110Y – for both the front and rear wheels.

The tyre was selected, comments Yokohama, for its high level of overall performance – proven stability and comfort at high speeds (300 km/h and above), as well as excellent braking. The Q7 is the third Audi model to have Yokohama tyres fitted as original equipment, joining the S6 and S8 in Audi’s top-class S series.

Further UK Growth in the Pipeline, Says NDI

Since the recent appointment of Ian Smith as managing director, West Midlands based industrial tyre wholesaler NDI Tyre & Tube Supplies has begun a new chapter in the company’s growth within the UK market. Smith began in his new role on March 2 and brings with him more than two decades of industry experience, including 21 years at Pirelli.

NDI states that it will now concentrate more actively upon working closer with its parent company, Denmark’s Nordisk Dæk Import AS. This leading Scandinavian wholesaler of wheels and tyres, founded in 1970, is already respected throughout Europe as a leading player in the market. The company is based in the town of Brørup and boasts a sizeable presence in its home market.

Two New Wheels From Wolfrace

Wolfrace has introduced the first two wheels in the new Wolfrace GB range of alloys; the Lugano and Ravenna. Lugano is a striking directional ‘turbine’ design with 10 sculpted blades and finished in gloss black with a polished surface. The Lugano is available in 5 stud fitments in sizes 7.5×16″ 7.5×17″ and 8.0×18″.

The new Ravenna is a multi-spoke wheel; each concave spoke is treated to the gloss black finish with a durable polished face. The Ravenna is available in four and five-stud fitments and suits a wide range of vehicle thanks to its various size options – 7.5×16″ 8.0×17″ 8.0×18″ and 8.5×19″. Like all Wolfrace GB wheels, the Lugano and Ravenna are made in Germany and have TÜV certification.

Bush Tyres Opens New Bourne Retail Branch

BA Bush & Son and its wholesale operation B.A.B. Distribution (a member of the wholesale group Grouptyre) has invested in a new retail facility. At a time when many businesses are contracting, the family concern, which this year marks 60 years in business, is celebrating by opening its 14th tyre retail depot in Bourne, Lincolnshire, at the end of April. The expansion is set to continue in July/August when the company is scheduled to open a new, purpose-built tyre retail centre in Spalding. According to company representatives, branch number 15 is “absolutely state of the art” and even has its own bridge.

“We always aim to reinvest profits in the company and are taking advantage of economic conditions to implement an aggressive growth strategy designed to increase our market share throughout Lincolnshire, Humberside and East Yorkshire by providing unrivalled levels of customer service,” said director Tom Bush, adding: “For many years we have met the needs of customers in Bourne from our Boston and Sleaford branches, so it was logical to develop a stand alone facility, albeit linked to and fully integrated within our retail operation, which would enable us to provide a more comprehensive and better quality of service to customers in this area.”
