Earliest and latest Bosch technology on display at the SMMT

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ new headquarters in London’s Great Peter Street is hosting a display to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the firm Robert Bosch, which began life in Germany in 1886 under the company name ‘Workshop for Precision Mechanics and Electrical Engineering’ (Werkstätte für Feinmechanik und Elektrotechnik). Bosch says both the vehicles on display and the choice of venue have “particular significance” for the company.

Reifen China still a ‘popular ordering and information platform’

The fifth Reifen China exhibition which took place in the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center on 22 – 24 November 2011 reportedly “registered a plus in all the sections”, according to show organisers Messe Essen and the China United Rubber Corporation. Official figures released by the two companies show that 11,255 trade visitors (20 per cent more than in the previous year) from 77 countries were present to order and obtain information about everything to do with tyres, wheels and garage equipment at the trade fair. And this emphatically answers the question posed by Tyres & Accessories preview of the show – Will 10,000 attend Reifen China this year?

Starco celebrates half a century of growth

In recent times the Starco name has been no stranger to the pages of Tyres & Accessories and tyrepress.com; much has been happening within the Danish company. Indeed, in the last few years we have witnessed Starco’s development from a Europe-focused small wheel specialist into a wheel and tyre manufacturer with global ambitions. Yet this transformation is just the latest chapter in the history of a company that, as of 11 December, has been in business for fifty years. To mark the company’s golden anniversary, Tyres & Accessories recently spoke with Starco chief executive officer Peer Ejlersgaard, who gave an insight into where the company has been and where it plans to go.

Animal transport firm switches to Alcoa wheels

Venneker based in Nordkirchen, Germany has opted to switch all its new trailers to Alcoa wheels. Venneker has over 35 years of experience in cattle trade and transport. The firm operates 48 trucks and more than 40 ultra-modern trailers and semitrailers to transport the animals, observing the latest EU regulations.

Demonstration key for balance weights marketing – Wegmann

Mitas to acquire Tribatyre

Mitas, a leading OE supplier of off-road tyres, has announced plans to acquire Tribatyre, headquartered in Uden in The Netherlands. According to the company, Tribatyre and Mitas plan to sign the purchase agreement on 8 December with the contract set to take effect 1 January 2012. Mitas reports that opening its new sales distribution office and warehouse in Uden will improve services and increase market share in the Netherlands and Belgium. The announcement was made at Agribex, the leading Belgian farming fair.

No extra charge for winter tyres, confirms insurance association

The Association of British Insurers has issued a statement reassuring motorists that fitting winter tyres shouldn’t result in an extra charge on their motor insurance. ABI member insurers, who represent 90 per cent of the UK motor insurance market, have confirmed they will not charge any additional premium if winter tyres are fitted, provided the tyres meet, and are fitted in accordance with, vehicle manufacturer specifications – and are in a roadworthy condition.

HGV wheel safety debated at Westminster again

In a Private Members’ Debate on Tuesday 29 November, Paul Goggins MP continued to raise the issue of commercial vehicle wheel safety with Parliamentary under-secretary of State for Transport Mike Penning, asserting “I am not going away on this issue.” The outcome of the debate was that the MPs will meet again soon, to discuss the outcome of Goggins’ meetings with industry representatives and trade associations. The MP, in conjunction with MWS, is setting up meetings with the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association; a process that the latest Westminster action will have eased, company representative Matthew Wells told tyrepress.com/Tyres & Accessories.

Projex launches new Storm van alloy fitments

Projex Design UK Ltd recently launched the latest addition to its Italian-made commercial van alloy range. The Storm wheel is now available for the Toyota Hi-Ace
and Hyundai I-Load. The company has been producing this wheel for more than 18 months and it now reportedly caters for every model of commercial van in Europe.

New debate on commercial wheel safety

Motor Wheel Service boss John Ellis is continuing to campaign for safety checks on second hand and take-off wheels entering the UK commercial vehicle market; the company estimates that over 10,000 such wheels enter the UK aftermarket every year, of which it says the large majority are sold by companies who do not possess the technical abilities or examination procedures to ascertain the history and fatigue of a wheel. His local MP Paul Goggins, with whom he has discussed the problem since 2010, will continue the debate with Mike Penning MP, parliamentary under-secretary of State at the Department for Transport, in Westminster Hall on Tuesday 29 November.

Alcoa launches new 22.5 x 11.75 wheel

Alcoa Wheel Products Europe is introducing a new 22.5 x 11.75 wheel with 120 mm offset and a 5000 kilogram load index for truck front steer axles and trailer axles. According to the company, the new wheel weighs only 23.6 kilos and is available with Ø 26mm mounting holes in four finishes: brushed, mirror polished, Dura-Bright and Dura-Flange. Alco reports that its wheels’ rim flanges are engineered to a unified rim flange design, allowing to accommodate both adhesive and clip-on balancing weights.

GKN names next chairman

As of the middle of next year, GKN plc will have a new chairman. The company announced the appointment of Michael J. Turner, CBE to replace Roy Brown, who intends to retire at the close of the GKN annual general meeting on 3 May 2012.

HRE rounds out Vredestein’s ‘Premium Styling’ portfolio

US-company HRE Performance Wheels is the latest rim manufacturer to team up with Vredestein’s Premium Styling label. The tyre maker says it and HRE decided to join forces as both companies “serve the same high end target group.” This new partnership will have its public debut at Vredestein’s stand during the Essen Motor Show.

Motorists back current MOT regime

A poll of motorists by the Institute of Advanced Motorists reveals that 60 per cent think that a car's first MOT should continue to be carried out after three years. Only 29 per cent think we should move to a European system.

FullChamp becomes a Ronal Group company

Wheel company Ronal reports that n October 2011 it signed a Memorandum of Understanding that integrates Taiwanese company FullChamp technologies Co. Ltd into the Ronal Group. FullChamp, which was founded in 2002, was already a Ronal production partner; the firm manufactures Ronal’s ‘Speedline Truck’ line of commercial vehicle wheels, a range developed by the Swiss company’s Italy-based subsidiary Speedline Truck S.r.l.
