Stamford Tyres presented with Tyrexpo Africa stand Gold Award

Singapore’s Stamford Tyres was awarded the 'Gold Award' for the most innovative stand at the recent Tyrexpo Africa Show 2012 in Johannesburg. Stamford says it prioritises visual presentation and the latest accolade further emphasises its dedication to the highest standards in its show stands. Daniel Eng, Stamford Tyres assistant vice president for international distribution says: “Receiving this prestigious award is a rewarding conclusion to a very successful show for Stamford tyres and South East Asia in the global tyre industry.

Editorial comment: Its show time

Those in Scotland and particularly Aberdeenshire may not agree, but normally April marks the end of winter and the coming of spring. In tyre markets across Europe this often means the re-introduction and re-fitting of summer tyres that have been nestled in “hotels” during the cold months. In fact those running Goodyear Dunlop’s HiQ retail franchise twitter account began prompting consumers to change back to summer tyres on 26 March. There’s not room to get into a discussion on the whys and wherefores of this particular approach here. Instead let’s highlight something else the seasonal change brings with it – trade shows.

Wheelwright launches Dotz ‘Fast Seven’ rim

Leading UK alloy wheel house, Wheelwright has launched a new design from the Dotz brand of fully TÜV approved wheels. The ‘Fast Seven’ wheel is suitable for a wide range of looks and applications. It is pressure cast in one piece, in what Wheelwright calls “a convincing take on a genuine split rim”. It has a gunmetal paint finish, juxtaposed with a diamond machined deep dish lip and bolt face.

Borbet aiming for 17 million output

According to Jürgen Gareis, plant manager at alloy wheel manufacturer Borbert’s Thuringia factory in Germany and managing director of Borbert Thüringen GmbH, the company’s cast aluminium wheel plants in Hallenberg-Hesborn and Medebach, both in Germany’s Sauerland region, combine to make up Europe’s largest wheel production complex. Company boss and (with a 76 per cent share) majority shareholder Peter Wilhelm Borbet points out the factories may not qualify for this distinction as they are not under the same roof. But whatever way you look at it, the figures are impressive: In 2012 the major OEM wheel supplier projects an output of four million units from these plants.

Yokohama completes F2 tyre testing

Yokohama has completed pre-season testing at Silverstone for the new specification Formula Two cars, which will use Yokohama products as control tyres for the first time in the 2012 season. Yokohama HPT, the UK distributor of the company’s tyres and TSW brand wheels, will supply the products ready-mounted to the control wheel rims and deliver to MSV, the UK-based company which manages the championship. It will also provide expertise and on-event support to the series, as it travels around some of Europe's most iconic racetracks.

Alcoa ranked first in Fortune’s most-admired metal companies

A table ranking corporate reputation published by Fortune magazine has named Alcoa jointly the most-admired metals company in the world with ArcelorMittal, the European integrated steel and mining company. The wheel manufacturer received top ranking in sustainability and innovation, which its representatives say is testament to Alcoa’s ongoing leadership in two areas that are key to the success of Alcoa’s business; customers and communities.

Alcoa opens new European fleet service centre

Alcoa Wheel Products Europe has announced the opening of its European Fleet Service Center, operational from 1 April, 2012. Located in Paal, Belgium, the Fleet Service Center will provide direct service to Alcoa wheel users, serving the majority of the European countries, according to Alcoa. The company says that the new facility will “improve the service level with better and faster support to Alcoa wheel customers”.

Maxxis launches ‘unprecedented’ motorsport reward scheme

Maxxis has launched what it calls an “unprecedented” reward scheme for UK motorsport drivers, making bonus prize money available for any Maxxis-shod podium finish in the 2012 four-wheel race season. Including every format on four wheels except for karting, Maxxis believes the scheme underlines its commitment to the roots of motorsport with a season of cash injections.

Growth continuing at NDI

Many within the UK tyre industry know the name NDI Tyre & Tube Supplies Ltd. This Derbyshire-based firm is just one part of a much larger operation, however. Parent company Nordisk Dæk Import AS, is well represented as a wholesaler, fast-fit operator, retreader and wheel manufacturer in Scandinavia and parts of Europe. The company is headquartered in Brørup, in the west of Denmark, and in addition to its facility there, where around 750,000 tyres are held in stock, Nordisk Dæk Import – NDI for short – operates 17 wholesale outlets, making it one of the largest wholesalers within the region.

AME introduces Nut Buddy wheel-nut remover

AME International has introduced its new Nut Buddy tool at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kentucky on 22-24 March. The tool allows wheel nuts over-tightened by an impact wrench to be removed by hand. “This tool is so simple to use, a child could easily remove wheel-nuts on an 18 wheeler that have been over-tightened,” commented Brett Waggoner, vice-president of the Brooksville, Florida tool manufacturer. “For anyone who is doing road service or removing truck wheels in the shop, it’s a huge timesaver.”

De Klok on track for a strong 2012

Although De Klok Banden has only been headquartered at its current site for seven years, organic growth and partnership deals in recent times mean space within the wholesaler’s warehouse in Oud-Beijerland, the Netherlands is already at a premium. When Tyres & Accessories met with company director Wim van der Heiden in late February, he shared that De Klok is planning to move some time soon.

Take care when switching to row-crops, says Mitas

Farmers should exercise caution when switching from conventional wheels and tyres to row-crop equipment this spring, advises Mitas Tyres. As ISO 9000 and Health & Safety regulations now place a heavy responsibility on tyre suppliers and equipment operators, Mitas cautions that fitting incorrect replacements could have severe consequences, including equipment failure or breaches of legal obligations.

Heuver to display Aeolus pcr range at Reifen 2012

As well as being represented by Kings Road Tyres in the UK, the Aeolus brand is distributed by Heuver Tyrewholesale in a number of markets on the continent. This year the brand will be present at the Dutch wholesaler’s stand and also have its own show presence, and during Reifen the Chinese manufacturer will not only show its latest products from its established truck and OTR tyre lines – the company’s new range of passenger car tyres will also be on display.

New warehouse to boost Starco’s wholesale activities

Danish firm Starco wears several hats. The company was once best known for specialising in tyres for wheelbarrows and hand-powered vehicles, and during its 50 years in the business it has also gained a reputation as a manufacturer – initially of steel wheels and small tyres, and very recently as an industrial tyre maker – the company’s Solid tyre factory in Sri Lanka is now in operation. And another, very important hat Starco wears is that of wholesaler.
