Matador’s High-Speed Offering

At this year’s Essen show, Matador will be introducing its hp and uhp sales programme, with tyres from its existing range and a new tyre; the MP 43 Aquilla EVO.
This is a summer tyre with a directional tread pattern, aimed at high performance passenger cars. On show on the Matador stand will be the very popular size 205/55 R16 91W and 94V XL – this is the first of a range of sizes that are being developed in Matador’s R&D Centre and which will be on the market in time for Summer 2007.

Retreading Companies Remain Confident

The size of today’s Russian truck tyre market is about 12 million units per year. Together with improving road infrastructure – in particular in urban areas – and the increasing importance of Western products and technology, the retreading industry too is moving ahead in Russia. It is not only the demand for retreaded truck tyres, which is growing, but also the demand for truck tyres that were retreaded in Russia and other former Soviet states. But one problem remains: in general casings have to be imported because Russian-made truck tyres are not good enough quality to be retreaded, say most market experts.

Russian Market Gains Additional Brands

At first sight it is difficult to tell whether the Tires & Rubber show, held for the ninth time in Moscow recently, is a show for the industry or the trade. Compared with the number of new tyre manufacturers, material suppliers, machinery and equipment providers, the tyre trade seems to have gained some ground at this year’s show compared to 2005. This statement applies to Russian as well as European companies.

For example this year Dutch company Van den Ban Autobanden was exhibiting in Moscow for the very first time. The goal was to introduce the company and sound out the market. “First we want to present ourselves here,” explains commercial manager Cyril Versteeg in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. In fact, there have been business contacts with Russian companies in the past but Van den Ban concentrated mainly on the Eastern markets of the recently enlarged European Union. “These markets are more accessible,” Versteeg adds. At Van den Ban’s headquarter in Hellevoetsluis there are sales personnel that speak all the local languages of these markets, he adds.

New Wheels from MAK

Italian manufacturer MAK has introduced two new alloy wheels. The first of these – the Veleno – is described by MAK as “our key wheel for 2006.” Veleno has 10 slender spokes and a sporty appearance, plus the open design means that almost the entire braking system of the car is visible behind the wheel, adding to the high performance image. The minimalist design is matched by the wheel’s lightness; an 18″ Veleno weighs only 10.7kg, compared with the more usual weight of nearly 14kg.

Inside a Chinese Chrome Plating Facility

China Wheel runs four chrome-plating factories with an overall annual capacity of 945,000 units. In Taian (Shandong province) approximately 240 employees produce 240,000 units; in the Donghua chrome-plating factory 120 co-workers make 300,000 units; in Donghui 80 people make 105,000 units; and in Zengcheng 200 produce 300,000 wheels annually (all three locations can be found in Guangdong province).

That Little XTRA

The market for cast aluminium wheels is reaching saturation point. While the low-volume, image focused brands are defending their territory in a crumbling segment, the mid-price segment has almost disappeared. At the same time, while the low-price segment may continue to move significant volumes of wheels, branding is to a large extent interchangeable.

Alloy wheels may still be most common tuning part, but that’s just it. Being the most frequently upgraded part means that it loses its exclusivity. Cast aluminium wheels have become a commodity and in some cases are already cheaper than steel wheels.

The new Purley Tyre Care Specialists is part of an ongoing expansion programme, which Merityre is expected to roll out during 2006. Steel wheel sales are said to have “surpassed all expectations,” necessitating relocation to a much larger warehouse facility. Still based in Seven Hills, Brisbane the company’s new address is 6 Prince William Drive.

Aston Martin has teamed up with Bridgestone once again, choosing Potenza RE050A tyres for the new V8 Vantage, having previously fitted the ultra-high-performance tyres on the popular DB9. The Wheel Business is a Network…

The huge Republic of China is an automotive growth market par excellence. And that applies to the automobile manufacturers as well as their suppliers. The country is not only at the centre of low-price manufacturing for “the rest of the world,” but has also become an enormous sales market in its own right. The cluster of cities in the east of the country is home to millions upon millions of inhabitants and the streetscape is shaped by the sight of premium segment cars and their upper middle class owners. These cities also have well-developed road systems. Rush-hour traffic jams are another familiar sight for anyone used to driving in western metropolises – and that’s despite the numerous additional lanes alongside just as numerous skyscrapers.

Marketing Gacosia Wheels in Shenzhen

Gacosia, owned by the Tsui brothers, has its headquarters in Hong Kong and a subsidiary in California. China Wheel produces Gacosia its alloy wheels, and in turn the manufacturer considers Gacosia as one of its two self-brands (the other being “Finn”). Stephen Tsui, Gacosia managing director, and his team, spend most of their time in China Wheel’s office space in Guangzhou: “We are very close partners,” he says. The relationship between the wheel brand and its manufacturer – and this is not uncommon in China – is not based on actual contractual agreements, as is the standard in the western countries. Instead it’s a case of “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours,” so to speak.
