Smithers Names New VP, COO

Jay H Lutz has been named vice president and chief operating officer of Smithers Scientific Services Inc., responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s independent testing, research and consulting activities. He replaces Raymond B Farmer, who has left the company.

Mr Lutz brings to Smithers 30 years of experience in operations management, R&D and engineering. He has held management positions with Kelsey Hayes and Allied Signal and most recently was director of research and development at Raybestos Products Co. in Crawfordsville, Ind. Prior to that, he served as vice president of operations and general manager within a unit of Kett Engineering in Brighton, Michigan.

Profit Opportunity? – Update

So far 50 per cent of those who answered Tyres & Accessories’ question of the month say they are simply too busy to sell wheels. This month’s question asks readers about their preferences when it comes to selling alloy wheels. Do you sell them or are you busy enough moving tyres to worry about the extra expense and hassle of selling wheels? The next 30 per cent of respondents said they order-in wheels as and when. Only 20 per cent say they actively try to sell wheels.

The majority may have said they do not have time for wheels, but the strongest comments came from those who order-in wheels. “I do not believe that there is one tyre dealer nowadays that has no time to sell alloy wheels. Albeit selling alloy wheels through a regular tyre shop would not provide millionaire success,” one reader told T&A. Workers OK New Deal at Accuride Plant

(Akron/Tire Review) Union workers at Accuride’s steel wheel plant in London, Ontario, overwhelmingly approved a new contract with the manufacturer. The three-year deal between Accuride and the 550 Canadian Auto Workers (CAW)-represented workers was reached 11 March and includes a base rate wage increase of 2 per cent. The Accuride plant produces steel passenger and commercial truck wheels

JIA to Exhibit at the ATS/CV Show

Cooper Launches All-Season UHP Zeon

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has introduced its new Zeon Sport A/S, a w-rated all-season UHP. Featuring “a bold tread design” and “predictable handling and control in both dry and wet road conditions,” said Cooper, the Zeon Sport A/S will be available is a range of 40- to 55-series sizes, covering 16- through 18-inch wheel diameters.

Pippa Rallies Round!

This year’s Monte Carlo Rally was certainly an occasion to remember for Pippa Inglis, who works for Vredestein UK. A keen rallying fan, Pippa and Belgian driver Pat Lambert took part in the event, driving a Porsche 356 SC, shod with Vredestein tyres, naturally. Not only did the duo complete the event, but they finished in an impressive 23rd place and, as the highest-placed female team, were awarded the Coupe des Dames (Ladies’ Cup).

Cooper Appoints New Mickey Thompson Wheel Product Manager

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s Mickey Thompson brand division has hired Carl Robinson to the new position of wheel product manager. Robinson had been Weld Wheel Industries Inc.’s director of motorsports and president of Race Wheel Enterprises Inc. in Dania, Fla. Robinson has also helped develop various testing devices for wheel and tire assemblies and is a past member of the S.F.I. Wheel Certification Committee, Cooper said.

Tecalemit Steers You in the Right Direction

Tecalemit has a range of play detectors for cars, LGVs and HGVs. The DE 9002 Car and LGV Play Detector with pneumatically driven plates is suitable for testing steering and suspension component wear on cars and LGVs up to a gross axle weight of 2500Kg.

The unit, which allows movement in two directions and partial turn and has a low voltage hand lamp and controls has been designed for use on inspection pits and, subject to approval of lift manufacturers, 4 post lifts, scissor and parallelogram lifts. A recessed option is available.

CTNA Announces New Flagship Performance Tyre

(Akron/Tire Review) Continental Tire North America (CTNA) announced that its recently launched ContiProContact will serve as the new flagship luxury performance tyre for the Continental brand. The ContiProContact tyre replaces its predecessor, the ContiTouringContact CH95. “The ContiProContact outperformed the ContiTouringContact CH95 in virtually every category, including straight and lateral hydroplaning, as well as ABS braking performance in both wet and dry conditions,” said CTNA in a statement.

Accuride Disappoints in Q4

Fourth quarter financial figures from wheel manufacturer Accuride were “somewhat disappointing,” according to Deutsche Bank pundits. Sales were up two per cent, against an expected 11 per cent. Lower volumes and high aluminium prices were cited as the reasons. The analysts are lowering their estimates for 2006 for Accuride, but are maintaining their “Hold” rating.

Dealers Witness BFGoodrich Dakar Victory

After a rigorous selection process, 16 tyre retailers from throughout Europe were picked to experience the recent Euromilhões Dakar 2006 Rally at the wheel of a fleet of 4×4 vehicles. The successful retailers were divided into two groups of eight, with the first party tracking the event as far as the 8th January mid-event rest day in Nouakchott in Mauritania, with the second group taking over through to the finish in Dakar, Senegal.

Pro-Align Promises Revolutionary Products at ATS

Pro-Align is promising an action packed stand, at this years Automotive Trade Show. DJ Wheels Launches New Designs for 2006

Pitching their marketing directly at young drivers looking to upgrade their first hot-hatch, DJ Wheels has released two additions to its 2006 range. With vivid computer game style images on both the literature and point of sale material, Sherbrook is aiming to move ‘First Wheels’ marketing forward in a campaign that breaks new ground in the accessory sector.
