Ayce Systems Hits the Road

Yorkshire based manufacturer and supplier of Smart Repair Systems, Ayce Systems, has acquired and equipped a demonstration vehicle to highlight the full extent of the company’s services to existing and potential customers who find it difficult or inconvenient to visit their offices, demonstration and training facilities in Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The vehicle has been fully equipped with every Ayce Smart Repair system, including the Wheelrite Pro alloy wheel repair and refurbishment machine. Technical services manager Dave Allen commented, “Customers who visit us are invariably impressed with the facilities and the range of our products. However, we accept visiting Yorkshire is not always convenient and can be time consuming. Now, if we get an enquiry in the South of England, for example, we can go and visit them. As far as I am aware this is a unique service within the Smart Repair industry.”

Sales Up, Profits Posted, Titan Eyes 73.5-Inch Tyre

(Akron/Tire Review) Titan International posted record first half sales of $436.6, up 22 per cent from the same period last year, but dropped only $2.5 million in net profits for the period, down from a $14.2 million net profit in the first half of 2006.

Titan said its total sales for second quarter 2007 were $210.3 million, up 20 per cent from the $175.2 million in sales posted for the second quarter of 2006. Net income for the quarter was $5.0 million, down slightly from 2006’s $5.6 million.

“The second quarter has been very exciting for Titan,” said Maurice Taylor, Titan’s chairman and CEO. “Our sales are up, as they should be from last year’s acquisition. We are expanding our OTR business and adding new OTR products by expanding capacity in Freeport, Illinois. While this is happening in Freeport, certain farm tyres are being transferred to our Des Moines facility.”

£5000 Reward for Tyre Theft Information

Bristol tyre retailer Autospeed is offering a £5,000 reward for information on a theft that took place at the Nailsea centre at The Vines Industrial Estate, between Saturday evening and Sunday morning of the 7th and 8th July. Workers at the centre arrived to work on Sunday 8th July to find that nearly all of their stock had been stolen overnight. In excess of 500 tyres, batteries, brake components were taken, including a Robinair AC650 air conditioning machine and a set of Supertracker wheel alignment gauges.

Autospeed Divisional Director, Simon King said: “This is a very serious crime and we are urging residents to contact the police if they have any information or saw anything suspicious. Autospeed is offering £5,000 reward for any information leading to the conviction of the people involved in the theft.”

TiWheel Directors Quit, Factory Remains Shut

Bidvest’s Alan Salomon tendered his resignation from the board of Tiger Wheel Limited on July 18, one day after the resignation of Brian Joffe was received. According to Tiger Wheel founder and chairman Eddie Keizan, the two men alternated as directors with each other, so once the first resignation was given it was logical that the second was imminent. Salomon’s was given a day later as he was travelling overseas.

The company’s factory in Babelegi, about 40km from Pretoria, has been closed and is not permitted to recommence operations until given the all clear by the liquidators. In the meantime, according to Keizan, customers have been left “shouting for wheels.”

Double Coin Tyres ‘Have Plenty More Potential’

In the last year, Kirkby Tyres & Wheels has experienced a near 20 per cent increase in truck tyre sales. Speaking to managing director, Dave Dorrity, Tyres & Accessories learnt that the company’s Chinese-produced Double Coin truck products are at the forefront of company growth, with fleet deals, OE business and increased tyre and wheel assembly business all either underway or on the horizon.

In fact business is going so well that Kirkby recently took the step of extending its own office in China, with an extra two mother tongue Chinese speaking employees committed to securing continuous stock levels and obtaining new product lines. Currently the company brings in six containers a day (across all product lines), with business growth reported in every sector.

While the majority of Kirkby’s truck tyre sales are in the replacement market, the company is also involved in various OE and fleet operations. These centre on Kirkby’s growing tyre and wheel assembly business which sees the company supply complete tyre/wheel packages to various trailer-makers. “The OE side of the business has really been customer led,” Dave Dorrity explained.

New Coats Wheel Lift System Available

(Akron/Tire Review) Hennessy Industries has released the new Coats wheel lift system for its 50xx, 70xx, and APX80 rim clamp tyre changers. The system helps protect expensive aftermarket and OE wheels while helping eliminate strain on tyre technicians handling sometimes large, heavy tyre/wheel assemblies.

Hennessy said the Coats wheel lift system helps the operator get tyre/wheel assemblies up to tabletop height with minimal effort. The unit installs easily, said Hennessy, and can handle up to 150 pounds.

The unit is compatible with Coats APX80 A/E, as well as A/E and AX/EX configurations of 7050, 7060, 7065, 5050, 5060, and 5065 model tyre changers, the company said.

American Racing to Focus on Auto, Racing Wheels

(Akron/Tire Review) Wheel maker American Racing Equipment to dropping its lines of motorcycle wheels to focus entirely on automotive and racing wheels. America Racing owns and markets such brands as TIS, Weld, Bod Coddington, Motegi, Dropstars, Dale Earnhart Jr. and American Racing.

“The exclusive focus of American Racing and its family of brands will be on market leadership in the automotive wheel aftermarket and professional racing wheel market,” said Steve Tooker, ARE’s CEO. “The decision was extremely difficult, but the move will allow us to focus our operations on pursuing our goal of serving as a market leader in both the automotive aftermarket and in professional racing.”

Cooper Adds Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has launched the Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR, a premium all-season touring tyre line. Cooper said the new Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR features a new performance tyre tread compound. The tyre is available in two tread designs – a T-rated version with four ribs and an H- and V-rated version with five ribs. Cooper said the tyre will address luxury sedan, minivan and CUV segments.

The Touring LSR has a UTQG rating of 640AA on its 14-inch sizes and 780AA on others, Cooper said. The tyre is available in 29 T-rated sizes and 29 H- and V-rated sizes, covering 14- through 18-inch wheel diameters. T-rated sizes come with an 80,000-mile treadwear warranty, while H- and V-rated sizes will have a 60,000-mile warranty. Cooper said the tyres will be produced at the company’s Tupelo, Mississippi and Albany, Georgia plants.

Hayes Lemmerz Completes Sale of Powertrain Components Facility

On July 5 wheel and automotive parts manufacturer Hayes Lemmerz International announced the sale of Hayes Lemmerz International – Wabash, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary that operates its Wabash, Indiana facility, to Harvey Industries LLC, a privately held company based in the US. Under the terms of the agreement, Harvey Industries has acquired all assets of the subsidiary. The financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed.

The Wabash facility employs about 325 employees and manufactures intake manifolds, cylinder heads, water pump housings, and cast iron exhaust manifolds. “This transaction will further enhance Hayes Lemmerz’ goal to strengthen our financial position and to focus on initiatives in select geographic regions that will improve the growth of our company,” said Curtis Clawson, Hayes Lemmerz president, CEO and chairman of the board. “At the same time, this transaction will provide the Wabash facility the opportunity to grow with Harvey Industries.”

TSI/SSG Take the Strain Out of Work

“Increasing awareness of environmental issues has popularised our range of tyre cutters, especially the portable TC-125 machine, with sales far exceeding our expectations,” said TSI/SSG export manager, Arvid Vaaten. The TC-125 will cut steel belted radial tyres with a rim diameter up to 52 inches and this includes radial tractor tyres.

An uncomplicated three handle procedure allows for comfortable operator control of all the cutters functions. The machine incorporates a roller table for easy manoeuvring of tyres and hydraulic positioning arms to hold the tyre in place. Even exceptionally heavy tyres can be lifted onto the machines roller table by a hydraulic lift. The heavy-duty moveable shear blade is sustained by two stationary blades for clean and easy cutting.

Followers of contemporary Formula One are well aware that motor racing can often seem more like a wheel oiled business than a sport, and the evidence of sponsorship deals and advertising tie-ins are an ever present companion to spectators either at the racetrack or when watching at home. Trax Supplies Weights for New Ford Mondeo

UK based TRAX JH Ltd has won the contract to supply the new Ford Mondeo, Galaxy and S Max with a new adhesive balance weight. Replacing zinc, the weight is made from steel and was reportedly chosen for its superior balance capability (steel is 20 per cent more dense than zinc), lower cost and increased environmental attraction. The small 5g and 10g segments enable the weight to be fitted over a wide range of wheel diameters.

An aftermarket version of this new weight (series 610C) is now available from Trax distributors. The Original Equipment weight (series 611C) is also available at a higher cost with corrosion protection to typically last up to 6 years.

Titan Issues Employee Bonus

Illinois based Titan International subsidiary, Titan Wheel Corporation, intends to issue a summer bonus to its employees on Thursday, June 28. Titan Wheel President Ron Schildt said the total bonus payout for the subsidiary, with locations in Quincy, Illinois., and Saltville, Virginia., is over $1.8 million.

“These men and women have helped build Titan into a world-wide leader in off-highway wheels,” said Schildt. “They walk the walk when it comes to making quality products here in America.
