Could Grosjean Land Longer Pirelli F1 Test Role?

Following his short-notice replacement of Nick Heidfeld as Pirelli’s Formula One test driver for this week at Monza, Romain Grosjean is keen to extend the deal for the remainder of the season. He told Auto Hebdo that the decision on his future with the Italian manufacturer beyond the Monza tests remained pending, though the Franco-Swiss said, “a decision will have to be taken quickly… another test will begin again the following week. I hope to be with it until the end.

‘Rolling Compensation’ Offered by New Pro-Align Sensor

A new addition to the range of conventional sensors offered by Pro-Align is intended to offer garages even quicker wheel alignment measurements. As Pro-Align explains, unlike many conventional sensors, its new DSP700 series sensors allow users to carry out ‘rolling compensation,’ making the measurement process much quicker and easier than the traditional jacking compensation method. The wheel alignment specialist estimates that measurement times can be reduced by as much as 60 per cent.

Michelin Shod LMP2 Makes Historic Hungarian Win

Michelin contributed to a motor racing milestone during the race at the Hungaroring near Budapest. For the first time since the start of the Le Mans Series in 2004, a round of the competition has been won by an LMP2 prototype. Strakka Racing's Michelin-shod HPD-ARX 01c caused a stir by claiming outright victory. All the LMP1 prototypes entered by Michelin's partners were hit by technical problems, including the Oreca-run Peugeot which was delayed by transmission trouble while leading. The collective rout of the front-runners enabled Michelin's sole LMP2 runner – the Strakka Racing HPD-ARX 01c of Watts/Leventis/Kane – to clinch outright victory.

New Union Agreement Ratified at Accuride Plant

Accuride Corporation has negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement with the unions representing 215 workers at the company’s aluminium wheel manufacturing facility in the US state of Pennsylvania. The existing agreement representatives with the International Union, United Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America was set to expire at midnight September 3, 2010. The new agreement for the Erie plant is effective September 4, 2010, through September 3, 2014.

Loeb Notches Up Yet Another Rally Deutschland WRC Win

Count ‘em up while you still can – another couple of seasons and we’ll run out of fingers. Sebastien Loeb has achieved his eighth victory in Rally Deutschland, the German round of the Word Rally Championship. Driving a Citroën C4 on Pirelli’s PZero tyre, the six-time world champion was fastest on nine of the event’s 19 special stages, which covered a total distance of 407.31 competitive kilometres through the Mosel and Saarland regions of Germany, making it the longest WRC round so far this season. Loeb’s win, alongside co-driver Daniel Elena, was his 59th in the world championship.

Superior Delays Q2 Figures Release

Superior Industries International states that the release of its second quarter 2010 financial results, scheduled to be made public on August 11, has been postponed due, in part, to the recent implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The aluminium wheel manufacturer says it is “working diligently” to finalise its second quarter results and will provide new dates and times for the earnings release and earnings conference call at a later date.

Carlisle Plant Production Confirmed to End in 2010

In a press release, Carlisle Tire & Wheel has confirmed production will end at its namesake Carlisle facility before the end of 2010. News of the site’s impending closure was first announced in July 2009 and relocation of production to a plant in Jackson, Tennessee began last April. Following the factory’s closure Carlisle’s 24,000 square metre distribution facility will remain operating in the town.

Guyson Launches Wheelmaster Alloy Wheel Refurbisher

Industrial finishing equipment manufacturer Guyson International has launched a new Wheelmaster product for use in applications such as smart repairs. “This is the ideal machine either as a brand new installation into ‘smart’ repair centres or auto body shops looking to offer a value added customer service by bringing the process back in house from subcontractors or indeed as a replacement for old, poorly performing blast units,” company representatives explained in a launch statement.

Alcoa Reduces Product Weight With Unified Rim Flange on 22.5 Wheels

Aluminium wheel specialist Alcoa has announces that following new lightweight wheels with unified rim flange design will be available from September/October. The unified rim flange enables both adhesive and clip-on balancing weights. The latest details follow the news that Alcoa and SAF-Holland have developed flangeless trailer wheel.

Michelin Demonstrates Benefits of XeoBib’s “Ultraflex Technology” at Contractor Panel

Michelin’s signature on an agreement to extend its cooperation with agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas was somewhat pre-empted in June when the French tyre giant held its Agricultural Contractor Panel (MACP) in association with Claas, using the latter company’s UK base on Saxham Business Park in Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk. Tyres & Accessories saw the panel meet for its tractor in field fuel saving workshop, where Michelin demonstrated the importance of the correct tyre choice, proper tyre maintenance and the benefits offered by the company’s XeoBib tyre, which has been developed using the company’s patented “Ultraflex” technology for “larger farming and contracting operations”. In terms of cost and environmental pressures, fuel preservation is one factor constantly near the forefront of many businesses, especially as a potential route to improving profitability and productivity.

Alcoa and SAF-Holland Develop Flangeless Wheel

Alcoa and SAF-Holland have announced that they are working together to develop a new trailer wheel which can be mounted without a separate hub flange. The lightweight forged wheel weighs in at just 28.5 kilos and its size is 22.5 x 11.75. Maximum load per wheel comes in at 4500 kilos. The offset is 60 mm and the disc thickness is 35 mm.

Carlisle US Tyre Consolidation Plans ‘On Track’

Carlisle Companies Incorporated reported net sales from continuing operations of US$709.4 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, an 11 per cent increase from the second quarter of 2009. Income from continuing operations decreased 32 per cent to $38.9 million, or $0.62 per diluted share, and net income was $38.6 million, compared to net income of $55.5 million for the second quarter 2009.

Tyrepress.com Publishes 20,000th Story

Last week tyrepress.com, the tyre and wheel business’s most popular website, published its 20,000th story since going online in 1998. Starting with only occasional reports on major news stories, tyrepress.com now publishes between 10 and 15 stories every working day – a number so substantial that the site has at the time of writing published another 100 stories since the milestone was reached earlier in July. All stories published on the website can be found under the “News” tab on the current website, where readers can browse stories by category.

Supertracker to Show Steering Angle Tool at Brityrex

As a regular exhibitor at the Brityrex Show, Southampton based Supertracker will once again be present in Manchester in October, this time introducing a recently launched Steering Angle Reset Tool which was released in May. Sharing details of its Brityrex exhibition stand, the firm said this tool has been developed in direct response to the industry's increasing popularity for steering angle sensors on modern vehicles. This latest Supertracker product allows the user to reset the sensor to the correct wheel alignment settings and ensures that any stability control electronics to operate correctly.

Michelin’s Motorised Wheel – Coming Soon to a Peugeot Near You?

At last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show vehicle manufacturer Peugeot presented its BB1 concept, a car just 2.5 metres long and powered by electric motors placed inside the rear wheels – units designed in association with Michelin. This extraordinary vehicle is now a step closer to going on sale after Peugeot confirmed it has shifted the BB1 from concept car status to project status. A production version should thus be unveiled in 2012 or 2013 and most likely closely resemble the concept car’s design.
