Freewheelers Volunteers to Ride on Avon Tyres

Cooper brand Avon Tyres has agreed to supply motorcycle tyres to the Freewheelers Emergency Volunteer Service, a registered Charity which provides emergency out-of-hours medical transport throughout the West Country.

Freewheelers’ fleet of marked-up Yamaha FJR1300s, often referred to as “Blood Bikes”, provide lifesaving transport for urgently-needed items such as blood (as the name suggests) test samples, patient notes, X-rays and medical supplies. Avon will supply Storm-ST tyres, while JHS Racing at Keynsham will service Freewheelers’ duty bikes as well as fit them with the brand new rubber.

Rubber Estimates Suggest Price Decreases on Horizon

New figures published by the International Rubber Study Group of Singapore suggest that the rubber price rebound of 42 per cent over the past four months is coming to an end. The Group estimates that tyre manufacturers’ sales will see a slump of 6.8 per cent in 2009, in line with the general worldwide decline in the figures of the automotive industries. 67 per cent of global output was used in the manufacture of tyres in 2008, making the industry the biggest consumer of natural rubber. Top exporter Thailand is about to increase its supply following its seasonal drop, with prices at $1,530 per tonne – 18 per cent higher than oil-based alternatives – says Bloomberg. The financial news source quotes Goodyear spokesman Keith Price’s assertion that the company would be able to convert 20 per cent of its rubber consumption to synthetic alternatives “without impacting tyre performance”. The manufacturer is keen to enhance its ability to cut costs through synthetic substitution, a sign – alongside increased supply – that natural rubber costs may be on the verge of a downturn.

Maxxis Extends Football Sponsorship to Liverpool

Following its sponsorship of Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, Maxxis has signed a deal with Liverpool FC to display its branding at Anfield until the end of this season (2008-09). The new partnership offers Maxxis worldwide exposure using the LED perimeter advertising system at the stadium for against Arsenal (21 April), Newcastle (2 May) and Tottenham Hotspur (24 May), in addition to the victory over Blackburn Rovers 11 April.

The partnership package includes prominent Maxxis Tyres advertising on Liverpool FC’s official website the UK’s most popular football website with 1.6 million registered users and up to 2.9 million unique visitors per month.

“The Barclays Premier League title run-in will be very close so we are delighted to have the opportunity to raise awareness of our brand at Liverpool FC games that will not only be sell-outs, but which will also be the main focus of TV’s football coverage for the remainder of the season,” said Maxxis Tyres UK’s managing director Derek McMartin.

Pirelli Top Rated in Tire Rack Surveys

Pirelli Tire North America reports landing the top spot in three out of four online consumer surveys performed in April. Tire Rack, one of the largest tyre dealers in the US, rated Pirelli’s Scorpion Ice & Snow, the 210 Sottozero, and Winter Carving tyres number one following an opt-in survey it conducted.

Consumers and customers of the online retailer are asked to contribute their opinions to a tyre survey that addresses twelve separate areas, including hydroplaning resistance, wet traction, cornering stability, dry traction, noise/comfort, steering response and other parameters such as light or heavy snow traction, ice traction and whether or not the customer would consider purchasing the tires again if given the opportunity. The survey data was tabulated from the responses of customers and website visitors, with performance traits rated on a scale from “0” to “10”, with “10” considered superior.

Tyre Industry Industrial Unrest in Thailand Reported

Various news sources have reported on disputes between management and workers at the Thailand operations of various international companies, including Michelin and Goodyear. According to Bangkok based publication The Nation, up to five hundred workers demonstrated on a range of issues, including Goodyear (Thailand) laying off 160 workers without any advance notice and Siam Michelin cutting salaries by 13 per cent and reducing working hours.

Maxxis has partnered with Max Power in an affiliation programme that gives the company opportunities to promote its range to the lucrative tuning, styling and performance sector. The deal, which officially began in March 2009, will see Maxxis support a series of Max Power tyre features, raise its profile through branding on the magazine’s website and provide product for testing and subsequent reporting in the popular ‘Max Garage’ pages. Bridgestone & TIA Educating Consumers With New Video

Bridgestone Americas is helping consumers make informed choices through the production of a short video that will be launched in time for ‘National Car Care Month’ in April. The company has teamed up with the Tire Industry Association (TIA) to work on the seven-minute video, which is available for viewing online.

The video, titled ‘Passenger Tire Replacement’, is comprised of three modules: Module 1 discusses tyre sizing and how the information contained on the vehicle tyre placard helps consumers select the best tyre and inflation pressure for their vehicle. Module 2 helps consumers understand tyre replacement guidelines, most importantly the proper installation when replacing only two tyres and the consequences of improper installation. Module 3 educates consumers on the critical issue of tyre rotation, and how proper tyre rotation can save consumers money, fuel and ensure maximum tyre life and performance.

Football fans that can’t get by without their mobile phones will soon be able to gain blessed relief from an online service operated by Continental. The manufacturer is launching a new service that provides news and facts on the Conti sponsored 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Information about tyres and other Continental products will also be available. The website for the company’s German home market has already been launched (http://mobil.continental.de) and Conti says sites for other countries will be introduced in the near future. Additional content is also planned, including a search engine for locating garages, workshops and motorway services.

Conti PremiumContact 2 Tops Which? Rankings

Continental’s PremiumContact 2 was ranked best in the recent Which? tyre rankings, earning the tyre maker its seventh and eighth “Best Buy” recommendations from the consumer advice magazine’s website. The ContiPremiumContact 2 received the highest overall performance score in the two tyre sizes featured in this month’s (April’s) report.

In the 205/55R16W review, Which? said; “The ContiPremiumContact 2 offers first-rate handling on dry roads, good wet and dry braking and good resistance to aquaplaning in bends and on straight roads.” Testers commented that the 185/60R14 H size offers “excellent handling on dry roads, good wet and dry braking and decent wet grip in bends and on straight roads”. In total the tyre, designed for medium-sized family cars, has now been given four “Best Buy” gongs in 205/55R16V (the UK’s most popular size), 205/55R16W, 185/60R14H and 195/65R15V.

So September 9, 2009, or 09-09-09, is not only an easy to remember date, it is also a very fortuitous one. The organiser of the CITExpo exhibition in Shanghai, Reliable International Exhibition Services, certainly hopes this will prove to be the case – this year the tyre show opens on this date.

So far so good: According to Reliable International Exhibition Services, exhibitor registrations for the seventh edition of CITExpo are continuing to keep pace with expectations and are not showing signs of being affected by the recent crisis. Although worldwide demand for tyre related products has declined since last year, both returning and new CITExpo exhibitors have, says Reliable, expressed a desire in meeting potential buyers at the exhibition and see this as a way of avoiding the affects of shrinking market demand. As of March, 70 per cent of floor space had already been booked by more than 200 exhibitors, a more than at this time last year.

3.5 Million on Illegal Tyres

Up to 3.5 million motorists in the UK are driving on illegal tyres, according to new research released this week. The study of 4,000 road users for Continental Tyres revealed a worrying ignorance of British drivers when it comes to tyre safety with one in 10 drivers running on tyres below the legal minimum tread depth. More than four in 10 (41 per cent) claim to have never checked their car tyres and a third admitted to not knowing how to check tread depth and tyre pressure. The survey was commissioned to coincide with the launch of a new website offering simple guidance to drivers on how to check tyres and other basic safety information.
