Tyre Recyclers to be Honoured With Michelin Innovation Award

When the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) holds its annual dinner on Friday 9 July, the industry body will honour leading companies and individuals involved in the treatment, processing or use of end of life tyres with the presentation of the inaugural Michelin Innovation Award. According to announcement released by the TRA, the award will be presented to the company or person judged to have made “the most significant innovation in this key area of the industry.”

Tom Griffiths Dies

Tom Griffiths, managing director of TG Tyre Supplies Ltd in Stevenage, has passed away suddenly on Sunday 4 April, two weeks after his 59th birthday. According to the NTDA website, which reported news of his passing and conveyed the association’s condolences, Tom Griffiths was a founder member of the NTDA's Tyre Wholesalers Group and will be “sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues throughout the Tyre Industry.”

Infinity Tyres Launches New Website

With sales of its car, truck, industrial and mining tyres continuing to grow across the 60 countries the brand is currently sold, Infinity Tyres is clearly looking to make an impact a this year’s Essen Show having booked a large stand near the premium tyremakers in hall three. In addition to raising the profile of the Infinity name, the company will no doubt be looking to publicise the fact that their production has been aromatic oil free for more months and is investing heavily in the research and development needed to comply with the forthcoming 2012 regulations, not to mention a number of additions and improvements to its range.

In March the company launched a new website which reinforces a new Infinity brand identity and supports new advertising and point of sale initiatives. According to the company, this overall brand positioning reflects the “growing and enhanced quality status of Infinity Tyres”.

Michelin Rumoured Close to F1 Return

If Autosport has it right, Michelin is not far from a decision regarding a return to Formula 1, although not as a sole tyre supplier. According to the autosport.com website, the French tyre maker may make an announcement regarding this during April.

23 Entries Confirmed for BTCC in 2010

On March 31, the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship officially confirmed that 23 cars are lined up to compete in the 2010 season. Despite the current economic climate, this is more than was announced at the start of 2009, and this year’s contingent includes a number of new teams, drivers, models of cars and big name sponsors. In total, seven different manufacturers, with nine different models, are represented on the grid, namely: BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, SEAT, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

Rimcity Claims to Offer Leading Range of American Wheels

Rimcity Wheels, purportedly the only authorised UK dealers for Giovanna wheels – as showcased on world famous tuning programme “pimp my ride,” is offering the new 2010 range of wheels from Giovanna, Gianelle and GFG. In addition, sales of what company reports was its biggest selling wheel of 2009 (the Giovanna Dalar) are said to be “still going strong.”

Given the strapline, “Real Tire Jobs for Real Tire People”, Koester predicts that there will be a huge shuffle of employees as soon as the economy improves. HiQ Forges First Main Dealership Agreement

The HiQ fast fit network has secured its first partnership with a large UK main car dealership, and the company believes this could pave the way for similar arrangements in the future and form part of the company’s attempts to revolutionise the way that fast fit is delivered to motorists. The partnership will see HiQ operate its services from Ford dealer David Harrison Ltd in Peebles.

Conti Reports US SmartWay Verification for New Drive Tyre

Continental Tire the Americas reports it new low rolling resistance version of its HDL2 DL Eco Plus drive tyre, due for commercial release in June in 275/80R22.5 size, has been added to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership’s list of low rolling resistance commercial vehicle tyres.

Delticom Launches US Wholesaler Site

Delticom North America, the US subsidiary of Europe’s largest online tyre retailer, has launched www.tires123.com, an online store targeting tyre retailers and service centres. The dealer-only website is the wholesale version of sister site tires-easy.com, a consumer site Delticom states is “known for its low prices for consumers.”

Michelin Plays its Travel ‘Trump Card’

The Michelin Group is first and foremost a tyre maker – 99 per cent of its business is directly tyre related. Yet the residual proportion of Group activities not centred upon the black, rubbery rings – the company’s maps and guides, ViaMichelin and Michelin Lifestyle – should by no means be viewed as just a sideshow, a therapeutic diversion from the serious business of producing tyres. In the words of Michelin managing partner Jean-Dominique Senard, “the one per cent is crucial to the 99 per cent of sales.
