Lucky Number

Move over Twelve…..Thirteen has arrived! This intriguingly named product is in fact the latest alloy wheel from German manufacturer Oxigin, and is follows on from the “Twelve” series rim. The one-piece “Thirteen” design is a five-spoke wheel with a high load-bearing capacity, making it suitable for use on heavy vehicles.

A particularly eye-catching feature of the Thirteen, says Oxigin, is the contrast between the wheel spider sections, which are painted in a high gloss, black finish (Higloss-Black), and the sections with a 2D-front-brushed finish (Face Diamond-Cut). The latter produce an additional spider that is turned inwards and whose “gleaming rays” point towards the wheel centre.

Two New Potenzas from BFNAT

Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire introduced two new Bridgestone brand tyres last week at the Chicago Auto Show. The new asymmetrical tread Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport, which BFNAT said is “an evolution of the Potenza RE750,” provides improved response, control, cornering, straight stability, linearity and grip than the RE750, the company said. The tyre will be available March 1, but sizing details were not made available.

Also launched was the Bridgestone Potenza G019 Grid, an all-new all-season performance line with a directional tread pattern. The tread area, said BFNAT, is wider than normal for handling, cornering and grip in all weather conditions. The H- and V-rated line will be available this spring in 27 popular 15- to 18-inch sizes in the 65 – 40 series, and a 50,000-mile treadwear warranty. (Tire Review/Akron)

UK Subaru Dealerships Buy 50 Brake Lathes

Following a recommendation from Subaru of America, UK dealership have purchased 50 on car brake lathes from Pro-Cut. According to the company, when the discs are resurfaced using an on-car brake lathe, mulitple repairs for brake judder, squeals and squeaks are virtually eliminated. The PFM 9.19 is the latest generation of on-car brake lathes and can skim an axle in under 20 minutes whilst the brake pads are being changed.

Subaru of America recommended the brake lathe in response to brake discs being classed as consumables and as such not covered by warranty. All Subaru dealerships and service centres have been advised to skim discs rather than replace them, saving the workshop time, saving the customer unneeded expense, and saving the environment by recycling reusable discs.

Wanli Adds Low Profile A/T Line

(Akron/Tire Review) Wanli Performance Tire has launched the Wanli S-2085 High Performance A/T line. The Wanli S-2085 is an H-rated, all-terrain tyre for light truck/SUV applications, said the company. “We see more truck owners wanting the best of both worlds,” said Don Mathis, sales director. “There is a demand for the low profile look and ability of a high performance tyre, plus the off road capability of an all terrain tyre. BFNAT Adds New LT/SUV Tire

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire has launched the Bridgestone Dueler A/T 695, a new all-terrain light truck/SUV line. Replacing the Dueler A/T 693, the tyre features Bridgestone’s UNI-T technology; a “two-in-one tread block design” for on-road stability and handling; silica-based tread compound for wet traction; open shoulder slots for water evacuation; and interlocking tread notches and off-shoulder tread blocks for mud and snow traction.

The tyre – R-, S- and T-rated – will be available in 21 sizes covering 15- to 20-inch wheel diameters, and has a 460 AB UTQG rating. The tyre also comes with a 50,000-mile limited treadwear warranty. All sizes carry the Bridgestone Platinum Pact 3-Year Replacement Limited Warranty and Buy & Try, 30-Day Guarantee.

AASA Sees Aftermarket Growing

(Akron/Tire Review) A new report by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA) says that the US light vehicle automotive aftermarket industry is expected to grow over the next several years, with the largest increase predicted for 2007.

A detailed analysis of the size of the aftermarket is included in the 2007-2008 AASA Automotive Aftermarket Status Report.

According to AASA, the value of the light vehicle aftermarket (parts and labour) will break the $200 billon mark within the next few years. The light vehicle aftermarket reached $185.2 billion in 2006, a 2.9 per cent increase over 2005. AASA estimates the light vehicle aftermarket will finish 2007 at nearly $193 billion, an increase of 4.0 per cent.

Michelin Sets New Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America has introduced the Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II, which will come with a 70,000-mile limited treadwear warranty. The new tyre will be launched this autumn in 26 sizes (21 T- and five S-speed rated), and is designed for large, mid-size and compact sedans, and minivans.

MNA said the range of 13 through 16-inch sizes offered will provide coverage of 94 per cent of the broadline segment and 79 per cent of the touring tyre segment.

Cooper Adds Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has launched the Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR, a premium all-season touring tyre line. Cooper said the new Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR features a new performance tyre tread compound. The tyre is available in two tread designs – a T-rated version with four ribs and an H- and V-rated version with five ribs. Cooper said the tyre will address luxury sedan, minivan and CUV segments.

The Touring LSR has a UTQG rating of 640AA on its 14-inch sizes and 780AA on others, Cooper said. The tyre is available in 29 T-rated sizes and 29 H- and V-rated sizes, covering 14- through 18-inch wheel diameters. T-rated sizes come with an 80,000-mile treadwear warranty, while H- and V-rated sizes will have a 60,000-mile warranty. Cooper said the tyres will be produced at the company’s Tupelo, Mississippi and Albany, Georgia plants.

New Wanli UHP to Hit the Market

(Akron/Tire Review) St. Louis-based Zisser Tire has introduced the Wanli S-1089 ultra-high performance tyre. According to Wanli Performance Tire, Zisser’s marketing arm for the line, the new Wanli S-1089’s tread a large serrated center rib for lateral stability and wet traction, and directional tread blocks.

Wanli Performance Tire said the new product is “engineered for comfort and performance in large diameter applications.” The W-rated tyre will be available in nine sizes covering 20- to 24-inch applications, as well as one in size 305/30R26. The tyre, which will be available in late June, said the company, will carry a UTQG of 280AA, and will be covered by Zisser’s free replacement warranty.

Vogue Adds 20-Inch to Popular Line

(Akron/Tire Review) To meet customer and dealer demand, Vogue Tyre & Rubber Co. has introduced a 20-inch version of its popular Custom Built Radial VIII. The H-rated 245/40R20 is being produced by Goodyear, and will be available to dealers in late July, Vogue officials said.

The Custom Built Radial VIII features Vogue’s trademark white sidewall and gold stripe accent. The new 20-inch size is M&S-rated for all-season performance, Vogue said, and features the company’s “gold puncture control pad.”

The tire carries a UTQG rating of 500AA and is an extra load size, making ideal for full size domestic sedans and plus-size fitments, Vogue said. Vogue also backs the tire with its warranty package.

Vogue officials said the company also launched a new Web site to support the tire – www.rollinonvogues.com.

Alcoa Adds Dura-Bright to LT/SUV Lines

(Akron/Tire Review) Alcoa Forged Specialty Wheels has added the company’s Dura-Bright wheel technology to its line of aftermarket light truck/SUV wheels. Dura-Bright, already available on Alcoa aluminum medium truck wheels, is a surface treatment that helps maintain a wheel’s bright, like-new appearance.

According to Alcoa, the proprietary surface treatment penetrates and reacts with the aluminum thus becoming an integral part of the wheel, and resists peeling, cracking and corrosion.

Ford to Recall US Police Cars

(Akron/Tire Review) The Ford Motor Co. plans to recall more than 109,000 Crown Victoria police cars due to cracks that can develop in the steel wheels that could cause rapid air loss in tyres during high-speed pursuits. The recall affects certain 2003-2005 models. According to the NHTSA, the cracks can form near the weld line that connects the rim to the wheel disk. The stress on wheels during pursuits is much greater than during normal driving because of police techniques, Ford stated.

Ford added that the cracks have been reported in a small percentage of the wheels, which had been covered by an extended warranty program. Dan Jarvis, a spokesman for Ford, said police departments have reported two crashes that they attributed to the wheel problem, but Ford is disputing the claims. No injuries were associated with the two crashes.

MAHA Opens New Production Facility

The new extension to the MAHA factory in Germany commenced operation following the Christmas break. The factory extension, built to accommodate the manufacture of 2 post electro hydraulic lifts, is considered by MAHA UK’s managing director, Gus Gregory, to possibly the most advanced lift production facility for the manufacture of 2 post lifts in the world.
