Solideal Opens New Location in Montreal

Solideal Canada is pleased to announce the opening of a distribution centre in Montreal, Canada in July 2007. The facility allows Solideal Canada to meet the growing demand for industrial and construction products in this region. The new 13,000 sq/ft building is large enough to accommodate a full inventory of material handling tyres, an industrial tyre Shop Press, construction tyres, rubber tracks and all other products Solideal offers.

The facility is fully staffed and operational. “We are confident that our staff in Montreal will support our dealer network and will be working with them to grow the business together” adds Grant Hiller, Sales Manager for Solideal Canada.

PAACE Automechanika 2007: Not an Ordinary Trade Show

(Akron/Tire Review) Last week, many North American automotive aftermarket professionals – including myself – packed their bags for Mexico City and the annual PAACE Automechanika trade show. The show this year drew more than 550 exhibitors and 19,000 attendees.

In recent years, the show has become known as a place for U.S. companies to explore expansion plans into Mexico and South America. The show is sponsored Mexico’s Industria Nacional de Autopartes (INA) along with U.S. industry association heavyweights: the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), the Motor Equipment Manufacturer’s Association (MEMA), the Automotive Parts Rebuilder Association (APRA) and the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA).

Whether you are a first-time attendee or veteran of the show, PAACE Automechanika always manages to amaze and educate about this growing market. According to a 2005 study by the Mexican Ministry of Economy and the INA, the Mexican aftermarket employs more than half a million people at almost 40,000 automotive parts stores and more than 146,000 repair facilities.

Goodyear, USW Locals Still Negotiating

(Akron/Tire Review – Topeka Capital-Journal) Six months after Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and the United Steelworkers reached a national labour agreement, negotiations continue on a local supplemental contract that has implications for employees’ work and vacation rules.”Everybody in our membership thought this would be an easy deal, but it’s proved harder,” said Glenn Griffith, vice president of Local 307.

Griffith said the national deal, or “master agreement,” sets the tone for such big-ticket items as wages and benefits, but it’s up to local negotiators to work out the smaller points, like work rules and how overtime and vacation can be scheduled. He said the union has been meeting with Goodyear since at least April.

Amy Brei, a Goodyear corporate spokeswoman, said some of the other 11 plants across the country have ratified their local agreements. She couldn’t provide numbers.

Solideal Opens Distribution Centre in Edmonton, Canada

The warehouse further complements Solideal Canada’s warehouse network that offers same-day and next-day service to over 80 per cent of the Canadian market. Solideal Canada now operates 3 Warehouse Locations in Ontario, a distribution centre in Edmonton and has plans to add facilities in Quebec by middle of 2007.

Conti Plans HQ Move

(Akron/Tire Review) The Charlotte Business Journal has reported that Continental Tire North America Inc. plans to move its headquarters from Charlotte to a business park in nearby Lancaster County, North Carolina. CTNA is reportedly negotiating a multi-million deal with the park developer.

According to the report, CTNA would move its 120-person headquarters staff to a 65,000-quare-foot facility, and will keep a small operation at its 1.7-million-square-foot Charlotte facility. The Charlotte facility had served as CTNA’s headquarters and home plant. The plant has ceased producing tyres, but still serves as a warehouse and distribution centre.

Tyre Chain Outlets Firebombed in Early Morning Attack

Local news has reported further details on the firebombing of two outlets belonging to a tyre company in Surrey. According to the Croydon Advertiser, the Coulsdon and Croydon premises of RSR Tyres had windows smashed and accelerants thrown inside within a 20-minute timre terrorism is eframe between 12.30am and 1.00am on the morning of May 28.

Managing director John Mullane told the Advertiser that he doesn’t believe this to be a random attack. “This is not just vandalism,” he said. “We have been targeted. I have to admit we are scared.” Mr. Mullane added he does not know who would possibly have such a grudge against himself or the company.

“From talking to the police and the fire brigade and the fact the fires occurred over such a short space of time, it is clear to me they are connected and it is arson. We have been told some kind of accelerant – we don’t know if it was petrol – was thrown in through the windows to start the fires.” The fires were described as “suspicious” by a Metropolitan Police spokesman.

To celebrate the opening of its new Nottingham Wholesale warehouse We Sell Tyres (Wholesale), in conjunction with Pirelli Tyres UK, offered their customers the chance to win £1,000 pounds-worth of electrical goods vouchers, plus quality Pirelli merchandise, by increasing their sales of Pirelli tyres, with particular emphasise on the new generation of P-Zero tyres.

This prompted an outstanding performance from AG- Services of Long Eaton Nottingham, Alan Gadsby pictured receiving his prize of electrical goods vouchers, courtesy of Pirelli. Gadsby from AG services a long standing Customer of WST, commented: “Its an opportunity I couldn’t resist and just had to go for the big prize, selling quality isn’t difficult, and the new P-Zero certainly has plenty of quality.”

Five runners-up also received prizes of £100 electrical goods gift vouchers.

Michelin Found Not Responsible for Worker’s Death

An investigation has ruled that neither Michelin nor the company that hired an independent contractor killed at the tyremaker’s Norwood factory in the US are to blame for his death. Neither the national Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the North Carolina Department of Labor found any evidence of neglect or foul play to have occurred during last October’s incident.

Nokian Tyres Accelerates Russian Factory Expansion

Nokian Tyres’ Board of Directors has decided to start the expansion and capacity increase at its Russian factory early. As a result of the start-up of Phase II, the output of the Vsevolozhsk factory will more than double with the target to reach the production of 10 million tyres by 2011.

It is not turning out to be a good year for the Jamaican employees of America’s largest tyremaker. Late on the evening of January 10 a blaze began in the Goodyear Tyre Distribution Centre in St Andrew.

Fire Destroys Essex Tyre Warehouse

Fire crews have unsuccessfully fought to save a specialist tyre warehouse from destruction in the Essex town of Rochford. Eight fire pump units attended the Ashingdon Road blaze early on Thursday January 4, and were required to cut open the building with a disc cutter in order to gain access to the heavily smoke logged site.

Michelin to Lease New Facility

International distribution facilities provider ProLogis has agreed to acquire a 32-hectare piece of land from Michelin. On this 32-hectare site in Poitiers, France, ProLogis will build a 32,000 square metre (344,000 square foot) facility for Michelin, which will then lease the property as a distribution centre under a long-term agreement. Michelin’s facility will be part of a new 139,000 square metre industrial park owned by ProLogis and said to be valued at approximately US$132 million (£67 million).

New Online Retailer Enters US Market

American tyre purchasers have just become even more spoiled for choice following the announcement that a new online retailer – Discountwheeloutlet.com – has opened its virtual doors to the public. Discountwheeloutlet.com, who claim to sell to the public at wholesale prices, stock more than 10,000 custom wheels for cars, trucks and SUV vehicles.

Due to their large stock levels, the company is able to offer their customers same day shipping, and can even offer customers wheel, tyre and accessory packages including free mounting and balancing.

According to the company, Discountwheeloutlet.com is the largest single warehouse distributor in the Pacific Northwest area of the US.
