R H Claydon Relocates Scunthorpe Warehouse

R H Claydon has announced that it has relocated its Scunthorpe wholesale warehouse operation. R H Cladon has occupied a location in the Flixborough Industrial Estate since 1990 and has now “well out grown the site [and] moved to a larger location on the same industrial park.” The new branch occupies some 43,000 square feet and is served by a newly built loading bay to handle container traffic. This warehouse will better serve an expanded area that runs from the East Midlands north and east to the Scottish Border.

The location is said to have a larger holding capacity that will initially serve five delivery vans. This and the company’s other sales and service branches (at Bury St Edmunds, Swindon, Stockport and Falkirk) stock passenger, van, 4X4, light and heavy truck, agricultural, construction, industrial, small implement, Turf and ATV tyres – not to mention tubes and more.

Alliance Opens New TN Warehouse

Alliance Tire USA has opened a new warehouse in Portland, Tennessee, near Nashville. The new facility, said Alliance, is along the I-40 and I-65 corridor, and “allows us to easily send tyres to customers in any direction.”

“We are loading the warehouse right now with container loads of farm, forestry and industrial tyres,” says Manny Cicero, president of Alliance Tire USA. “We are now able to stockpile many of our most popular designs and sizes. Keeping key tyres in inventory helps us maintain ‘safety stock’ for our OE customers, and it helps us support our distributors around the country. Especially in these days where credit is tight and distributors are pulling back on investing in inventory, Alliance is committing money and product to the market to shorten the supply chain and to ensure product is available where and when needed.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Kumho Opens New US Warehouse

Kumho Tires recently opened a new tyre warehouse in the US, the seventh it operates in this market. Based in New Jersey, the 150,000 square foot facility will provide storage space for up to 225,000 tyres and support distribution and dealer partners in ten states.

Bike Tyrestore on Show at the NEC

Bike Tyrestore is once again exhibiting at the Motorcycle Trade Expo at Birmingham’s NEC on 18 -20 January. Company managing director, Peter Smith, told Tyres & Accessories that the company is confident it can repeat last year’s successful growth in sales to the motorcycle tyre trade in 2009. On show with its major partners, Bridgestone, Michelin and Sava, BTS will be demonstrating “YOUR Online Warehouse”, the company’s on-line enquiry and order service and Customer Loyalty Rewards programme “Moto-Vate”, which has just concluded a unique deal with the Ron Haslam Race School. BTS won “Best Trade Service” award last year and is known for having the friendliest Customer Service Team in the business.

TGI Launches Online Ordering System

Tire Group International has today (5 January 2009) launched its new online ordering system. The launch is being described as the final step in a two-year long programme of Improvements to the company’s existing system, which have included the implementation of a fully operational warehouse management system (WMS) integrated to a new back-office ERP system.

TGI partnered with Radiant Software Solutions to tailor a complete software solution for all of its needs, allowing TGI to increase sales in 2008 by over 20 per cent without any additional employees. The technology has also helped the company become more ecologically friendly and is now virtually paperless.

Fire Burns Through Cooper Tire Warehouse

An Arkansas, US warehouse containing 100,000 tyres and used by Cooper Tire has caught fire. The frame of the 200,000 square foot warehouse is said to have collapsed and fire spread throughout the building. The fire is believed not to have spread to other buildings or a nearby forested area.

Counterfeit Dunlop Tyres Discovered in Philippines Raid

The Philippine government’s Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) has raided a warehouse on the northern island of Luzon, seizing some 10 million peso (£133,500) of counterfeit tyres and motorcycle spare parts. According to a PASG statement, the agencies raided the warehouse after receiving surveillance reports indicating the illegal nature of the activities within. The tyres confiscated from the warehouse are said to have been counterfeit Dunlop tyres.

Cooper Has New Distribution Centre

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. has leased a 362,000-square-foot warehouse area in Allentown, Pa. The warehouse area, according to reports, will serve as a tyre distribution centre. Earlier this year, Cooper said that it was reconfiguring its distribution centre alignment. The warehouse space is being leased from AMB Property Corp. (Tire Review/Akron)

Bridgestone Americas Appoints First Female Plant Manager

Bridgestone Metalpha U.S.A., Inc. (BMU), a subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas Holding, Inc., announced on August 11 that Donna Bright has been promoted to plant manager of the BMU radial steel cord manufacturing facility in Clarksville, Tennessee. With the promotion, effective August 16, Bright becomes the first female plant manager at any Bridgestone Americas facility.

Grouptyre Launches New Website

Grouptyre has launched a new website, which is designed to reflect its new corporate identity. “While it’s important to ensure our website promotes the new-look Grouptyre, we have also taken the opportunity to develop certain aspects of the site to provide greater functionality and are now confident it will prove a useful resource for all our customer groups,” said director of commercial operations Karl Naylor.

The website has now added profiles of all Grouptyre’s suppliers – including all the premium brands, a wide range of budget brands and some carefully selected exclusive brands – plus links to the manufacturers’ own websites. There is also information on, and a link to, the Grouptyre ‘virtual warehouse’ Grouplink, which gives independent tyre retailers and garages desktop access to a wealth of product and stockholding information.

Tire World Takes On Mighty Franchise

Tire World, a five-store tire retailer based in Colorado Springs, Colo., has become a Mighty Auto Parts distributor.

In April 2008, Tire World formed a separate entity to establish the franchised distribution business. Mighty Auto Parts of Southern Colorado operates from approximately 3,000 square feet of warehouse space strictly as a wholesale distributor of Mighty-branded products to the affiliated Tire World stores as well as other non-affiliated tire centers, quick lubes, car dealerships and general repair shops within the new franchise territory.

Tire World President Bill Prentice said, “We operate our Mighty business separate from our tire business. Tire World just happens to be one of our important customers. However, our Mighty franchise offers the same products, services and pricing to all of our customers. We’re very anxious to watch our Mighty business grow.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Man on Trial After Illegally-Stored Tyres Burn

A US man who supervised the illegal storage of 40,000 tyres has gone on trial following a fire that burned for over 24 hours and took millions of gallons of water to put out in May 2006. Rick Handley of Alabama is answering to the prosecution, which argues that the tyres were stored illegally for a company called US Tire Recovery.

The organisation bought used tyres in bulk, separating those that could be resold and stacking others in the warehouse facility. Handley had been ordered to stop this practice of stockpiling in November 2005, while he never applied for the proper permit required by the Solid Waste Management Act.

Cooper Tire Move Warehousing Operations

Ohio-based manufacturer Cooper Tire has revealed its plans to move its warehouse facility from Dayton to Franklin, Ohio. According to local news sources, the move is scheduled to be completed in 2011, when the new site – which will be positioned near Interstate 65 on Franklin Tech Park – will open with a staff of 60.

Reportedly, Cooper has requested approaching $750,000 in tax exemptions and state incentives in return for relocating to the new setting, which will see a new 808,500 sq ft building erected for the purpose.

Ray Darcy Retires After 37 Years in Tyres

After 37 years in the family business, Ray Darcy is handing over the reins to a non-family member. Ray Darcy has been with the company firstly on a part time basis, then as full time manager, since his parents set up North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts in 1971, and is now retiring from the position of Retail Director. Roger Griggs, who brings with him 27 years experience in the industry, takes up the role with immediate effect.

The company, originally known as Melbourne Tyre and Exhausts was based in Brotton but expanded quickly and today boasts 11 bases across the retail and warehouse sectors, across the entire North of England. Having run the Marske and Brotton outlets for 23 years, Ray then took over the entire retail operation and took up the reigns of chairman in 1997.

Industrial Tyremaker Established New US Warehouse

Solideal USA recently took over a 122,596-square-foot warehouse space in Joliet, Illinois. The warehouse, originally constructed in 1969 for Caterpillar, underwent a full renovation to accommodate its requirements, Solideal said, and now features 10 new exterior truck docks, a new drive-in door, and 10 trailer parking stalls.
