Bridgestone Australia Expresses Regret over Goodyear Closure

Bridgestone Australia Ltd has expressed its regret that rival manufacturer Goodyear is ceasing tyre manufacturing in the country, a decision that leaves Bridgestone as the only tyre manufacturer operating in the Australia/New Zealand region.

“We understand the increasing challenges to Australian manufacturing,” said Mac Ohashi, Bridgestone Australia chairman and CEO. “However, Bridgestone remains committed to local tyre manufacturing and we are proud of providing quality Australian-made tyres to our customers.”

30 Years of Turbocharger Production in Bradford

BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems has just celebrated the 30th anniversary of the opening of its commercial vehicle turbocharger factory in the city of Bradford. Only recently, the plant underwent extensive modernisation to ensure that it can optimally meet the ever-increasing demand for turbocharged commercial vehicle engines. Jury for Michelin Challenge Design Named

The 2009 judging panel for Michelin Challenge Design has been announced, and in July the panel will meet to select the vehicle designs and concepts that will make up the special exhibition at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

The central theme for this year, the eighth in which the international competition has been held, is ‘Brave and Bold, America’s Next Iconic Vehicle’, and Michelin says that companies, studios, design teams and individual designers from more than 45 countries have submitted full-size vehicles, scale models and renderings. The designs will be evaluated, says Michelin, for uniqueness, emotional appeal, design courage and technical execution.

Conti Developed Volvo Safety System Wins First UK Award

The Continental rear-end collision prevention safety system that recently debuted on the Volvo XC60, and will be fitted standard to the vehicle when it reaches UK showrooms this October, has won its first UK award. The City Safety system took top honours in the Technology category at the Fleet World Honours Awards 2008, held in London on May 13.

Commenting on the award, Chairman of Judges George Emmerson said: “Volvo’s commitment to researching and developing groundbreaking technologies has led to a number of safety milestones. City Safety is among the cleverest so far, predicting when low-speed accidents will happen and preventing them from occurring. City Safety will offer fleets financial, operational and social benefits that deserve recognition.”

Goodyear’s 400th OE Agri Tyre Approval

Goodyear’s farm and industrial tyre department has announced its 400th original equipment approval since 2003. All major farm and industrial machinery manufacturers, reports Goodyear, now sell their new machines originally equipped with tyres from the US tyre major. The list of agricultural vehicle manufacturers who have approved Goodyear Optitrac tyres includes major brands such as John Deere, Case New Holland, Fendt, Claas, Massey Fergusson, McCormick, Landini and BCS Ferrari.

Goodyear Industrial Tyre Lifts More

Goodyear has increased the load carrying capacity of a key size of one of its popular Sure Grip Lug industrial tyres. The load index of the 12.5/80-18 Goodyear Sure grip lug tyre has increased from 139 (10PR) to 146 (14PR) following an upgrade to the carcass and bead construction. This increase gives the new tyre a maximum nominal carrying capacity of 3000Kg which is an increase over the previous tyre of 570Kg per tyre or 1140Kg on the axle. This tyre size is a popular fitment on JCB, Komatsu, Cat, CNH and Volvo industrial machines and in particular on the front axles of Backhoe loaders.

According to company representatives, the change has been brought about following an in-depth analysis of the machines in the market place and in anticipation of future developments of these industrial machines.

Conti Launches Rear-End Collision Prevention System

On the final day of March an important new product from Continental was given its series production debut – a sensor system designed to prevent rear-end collisions at city driving speeds. Premiering on Volvo’s XC60, Continental calls the new sensor system an “important milestone” for its all-round ContiGuard safety system.

The system monitors the road ahead of the vehicle, and is networked with the braking system. It automatically applies the brakes if there is a risk of a rear-end collision and the driver either fails to react or if his or her reactions are too slow. Continental has developed and supplied both the infrared sensor, which monitors the road ahead and detects objects, and the electronic braking system, both of which are core components of Volvo´s innovative “City Safety” concept.

Greater Loads Possible with Upgraded Goodyear Sure Grip Lug

Ford Announces Jaguar, Land Rover Sale Agreement

Not strictly tyre-related, but nevertheless a significant event for the UK automotive industry. On March 26 the Ford Motor Company announced its entry into a definitive agreement to sell its Jaguar Land Rover operations to India’s Tata Motors. The transaction, says Ford, is the culmination of its August 2007 decision to explore “strategic options” for the Jaguar Land Rover business while accelerating its focus on its core Ford brand and One Ford global transformation.

The total cash amount to be paid by Tata Motors for Jaguar Land Rover upon closing will be approximately US$2.3 billion. At closing, Ford will then contribute up to approximately $600 million to the Jaguar Land Rover pension plans. The sale is expected to close by the end of the next quarter and is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of applicable regulatory approvals.

Fleet Trial Shows Michelin Tyres Save on Fuel Costs

Bolton-based haulage contractor Thomas Harwood & Son Ltd reports seeing an improvement in fuel economy after conducting its own in-house trial with Michelin’s low rolling resistance Energy tyres. The company claims that the savings they realised translate to cost savings of over £1,000 per vehicle per year.

The trial saw staff at Thomas Harwood carefully recording fuel data on a 44 tonne Volvo FH12 6×2 tractor unit over a period of more than two years – with the vehicle first fitted with Michelin ‘E’ segment regional tyres (XZE2+ / XDE2+), and then switched to operate on Michelin Energy tyres (XZA2 / XDA2+). The length of the trial ensured small inconsistencies were ironed out, with the non-Energy tyres returning an average of 8.68mpg, against 8.99mpg with the vehicle fitted with low rolling resistance tyres. This difference in fuel economy equates to a saving of 3.45 per cent – which in real terms is worth £1,025, based on an average annual fuel bill for a tractor unit of £30,000 a year.

Hauling Coal with Semperit

Ayrshire based haulier French & Son shift a million and a half tonnes of coal each year to local railheads and into southern England, and the company has praised the durability of the Semperit tyres fitted to its vehicles. For almost three years Semperit has been the tyre of choice for the long-established firm of Tom French & Son of Cumnock. Their 42 trucks – mainly Volvo mid-lift axle artics – move between 6,000 and 7,500 tonnes of coal every day from a local open cast mine. It’s very demanding work, both for the vehicles shuttling constantly between the site and the nearby railhead and for those on the long haul work.

Improved Varta PROmotive CV Batteries

Johnson Controls has revised its range of Varta-branded CV replacement batteries to replicate all OE applications. Johnson Controls is the largest European supplier of OE batteries to the truck and bus industries. The range of Varta PROmotive CV batteries now provides virtually total coverage of the UK commercial vehicle parc, with capacities ranging from 140 – 225 Ah.

Heavy Duty batteries are rated 140 and 170 Ah, while Super Heavy Duty are offered with 180 or 225 Ah capacities. All four products use calcium-silver technology to provide reserves of power for high loads at high temperatures and longer service life than conventional lead acid battery technology.
