Fulda Fairs Well in ‘Which?’ Test

The new Fulda EcoControl has been declared one of ‘Which? Magazines’ Best Buy tyres, ranking in the top three in the Supermini tyre test. Which? tested the UK’s top two selling sizes of tyre – the 195/65R15V and 175/65R14T, sizes commonly fitted to strong selling vehicles such as the Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Auris and Mazda 3.

Which? Magazine carried out the tyre tests to highlight that, with forward planning and product knowledge, buying tyres doesn’t have to be an emergency purchase. The publication tested the tyres in seven situations including dry braking, dry handling, wet braking, wet grip on the straight and on a bend, wear, and noise eco rating, generating an overall performance percentage. Fulda is pleased with the results its 195/65R15V tyre achieved during the test – the Fulda EcoControl’s overall score of 63 per cent was a considerable 43 per cent higher than that of the lowest performing tyre. Fulda performed well in dry braking and wet grip in corners, ranking higher than the overall test winner.

New Passat Features Self-Sealing Conti Tyres

The new four-door Passat CC, premiered at the Detroit Motor Show, will roll off the production line equipped with self-sealing Continental tyres. Using a technology known as ‘ContiSeal’, the German tyre major’s sealing system enables a vehicle to continue travelling even after a tyre has been punctured with a screw or nail. It is not hampered by the limitations of run-flats; a protective layer on the inside of the tread immediately seals any hole that develops when a screw or nail puncture the tyre, preventing air from escaping.

Hankook Confirms News of VW OE Deal

Hankook has confirmed reports it has reached an agreement with Volkswagen for the delivery of 70,000 tyres per year as original equipment on the latest model VW Tiguan. Effective immediately, the compact Volkswagen SUV will leave the assembly line equipped with, amongst others, Hankook’s Dynapro HP tyre in size 215/65 R 16 H. The Hankook Dynapro HP is a high performance tyre intended predominantly, but not exclusively, for on-road use and was specifically designed for the ever more popular class of smaller yet powerful SUV vehicles such as the Tiguan.

The Hankook Dynapro HP – some sizes of which are produced at the company’s recently opened facility in Hungary – features a symmetric 5-rib pattern designed to provide excellent directional stability even at high speeds. The tie bars lying between the tread elements allow for enhanced lateral stiffness while improving dry braking performance. Hankook adds that they also, in combination with the tyre’s relatively tight block arrangement, offer greater circumferential stiffness and a reduced rate of wear.

South Korean Manufacturers Sign OE Deals

South Korea’s two leading tyre manufacturers have each entered into original equipment agreements with international manufacturers. The larger of the two deals has been signed by Kumho, who has agreed to supply 400,000 tyres to Chrysler for the company’s Dodge Journey SUV. The value of the agreement has not been disclosed.

The deal signed by Hankook also involves SUV tyres. The Korean company will supply 70,000 tyres for the Volkswagen Tiguan compact SUV. Again, financial details of the OE supply contract have not as yet been made available.

Tyremen Distributes CMS, Seeks New Trade Partners

As we enter 2008, Tyremen’s is seeking new trade partners to distribute CMS light alloy wheels. Interstate Tyres On Show in Kuwait

Interstate Tires are to participate at the prestigious Kuwait Automobile exhibition. From November 28 to December 4, 2007 Interstate Tires will display the company’s complete range of tyres. The Middle East is fast growing market and, according to Theo de Vries Interstate Tires are very popular in “various” Gulf states. Furthermore Interstate Tires is approved and licensed to be used in the official dealer organizations of Volkswagen, Audi, Ford and Mazda. “You can find Interstate Tires in the main hall, next to Audi and Spijker cars,” company president Theo de Vries told Tyres & Acceessories.

Maywood Adds to its Force Range

Following the successful launch of the Force 36 3.6 tonne electro-hydraulic 2-post lift, Maywood has announced it will be adding the Force 60 to its range. The Force 60 is an electro-hydraulic two-post lift with base frame. It compliments Maywood’s range of lifts for large and heavy cars as well as the light truck market. Within this range Maywood offers the Hofmann 5 tonne two-post lift, which has vehicle manufacturer approval from Ford, Volkswagen, Renault and many others. Maywood believes the Force 60 can now give a workshop even greater capacity at the same price, and offers convenience through removing the necessity for a vehicle owner to empty the vehicle before the lift is raised. The scenic “La Borromea” toll road that twists its way down the 1,491 metres of northern Italy’s Monte Mottarone is renowned for offering splendid alpine panoramas and views of neighbouring Lake Maggiore. But for Pirelli and Volkswagen the road, draped across the mountain like a carelessly dropped strand of spaghetti, proved ideal for a far less peaceful use.

La Borromea’s steep descents, hairpin curves and sparse traffic provided all the ingredients required to show off the capabilities of Volkswagen’s Golf GTI Pirelli. Returning in May after a 24-year hiatus, the not so ordinary hatch has high expectations to meet – its predecessor sold 10,500 units in just six months, a far higher quantity than anticipated, and quickly became a much sort after classic. So to prove that the 2007 Golf GTI Pirelli is every bit as much built of the right stuff as the 1983 version, in October Pirelli and Volkswagen invited media representatives to put their new creation through its paces.

Kumho Broadens its OE Horizons

Kumho has been a significant supplier to OEMs in its home market of Korea for many years. Recently, however, the company has taken a number of strides towards securing deals with major automotive manufacturers in Europe and the US. To that end, Kumho have set up offices in Birmingham, Hamburg and Detroit, as well as an office in Tianjin, China.

The tyremaker’s breakthrough in Europe came in 2001, when Kumho won the contract to supply 200,000 tyres a year to Volkswagen AG for the 2002 model year Polo. Though this was the company’s first ever European contract, it was not the first association with Volkswagen, to whom it already supplied tyres for the Mexican built Beetle. More recently, Kumho was selected by DaimlerChrysler AG to supply tyres for the second generation Mercedes Benz A-Class model. The development programme for this contract was led by Kumho’s Birmingham based European Technical Centre (KETC) and the main focus was ride refinement whilst maintaining suitable levels of wet and dry performance as well as a low rolling resistance. The result was a new tread compound and carcass material for the Kumho SOLUS KH15.

Vicki Gets into Gear for Tyre Safety

UK online tyre retailer etyres has teamed up with Vicki Butler-Henderson – the face of Tyre Safety Month – to produce two tyre safety videos showing the dangers of driving on worn tyres. Both are now available to view on the eTyres website www.etyres.co.uk or through the TyreSafe website, www.tyresafe.org.

The dramatic videos, which were shot at the Motor Industry Research Association in Nuneaton, clearly and graphically depict how dangerous braking in the wet can be in a vehicle fitted with worn tyres. As Vicki says in the video, stopping on a wet road with 1.6mm tread can extend the braking distance by 8 metres compared with new tyres!

Research by TyreSafe has also shown that almost three quarters of all cars on the UK’s roads have tyres that are under-inflated, and during Tyre Safety Month the organisation seeks to hit home the message that vehicle handling can be adversely affected by under-inflated tyres, leading to a potential accident.

Volkswagen and Which? Support Tyre Safety Month

As Tyre Safety Month kicks off this week Volkswagen and Which? magazine have shown their support for TyreSafe’s consumer awareness raising campaign. For its part Which? magazine is supporting tyre safety month by making their Best Buy Tyres Report available free to view for all visitors.

Volkswagen has become the first automaker in the UK to support Tyre Safety Month. As part of the initiative, which aims to highlight the road safety dangers of under-inflated tyres, motorists with vehicles of any marque are able to visit a participating Volkswagen dealer in the company’s 250-strong retail network, and receive a free tyre pressure and safety check and tyre safety leaflet during the four weeks of the campaign.

Hankook’s Icebear Performs in European Tyre Tests

Hankook’s winter tyres have impressed the German automobile press. The Icebear W440, for example, has received good results in “auto motor und sport” (Issue 21/2007; tested size: 205/55 R 16 H) winter tyre test. The Hankook winter tyre impressed with a low noise level prompting the “auto motor und sport” testers to give the Icebear W440 their recommendation: “…The Hankook Icebear W440 is proof that you do not always have to opt for the expensive premium tyre. The tyre’s balanced performance and attributes position the Icebear W440 right in the premium tyre segment…”.

The Icebear W440 has also received a recommendation in the big winter tyre comparison test conducted by the automobile clubs ADAC (Germany), OEAMTC (Austria) and TCS (Switzerland). The Hankook winter tyre was tested in the popular dimension 205/55 R 16 H on a front-wheel drive Opel Astra. As a result the testers gave a “recommendable” verdict. The W440 is available in the speed indexes Q (-160 km/h) to H (-210 km/h) in the dimensions 135/80 R 13 to 205/55 R 16, partially with Extra-Load specifications. Naturally the Hankook Icebear W440 bears, if you can excuse the pun, both M+S- and snowflake-markings.

VW Approves Hofmann Geodyna 6900P Balancer

Volkswagen has approved the Hofmann geodyna 6900p automatic wheel balancer for use in the manufacturer’s authorised service centres. Snap-on Equipment will supply the machine with automatic wheel data entry under the designation VAS 6420. The geodyna 6900p joins another five Hofmann wheels balancers approved by VW.

Auto Express Awards Goodyear HydraGrip ‘Best Buy’ in Tyre Test

The Goodyear HydraGrip has been awarded ‘Best Buy’ in the family car tyre market after winning the UK’s biggest independent comparison test of tyre performance and safety.

Auto Express, Britain’s biggest selling motoring weekly magazine, today revealed the results of its comprehensive test of 16 tyre brands. The test compared stopping distances, handling, grip, fuel consumption, in car-noise levels and prices to determine the champion in the highly competitive family car tyre market. The test featured one of the biggest selling tyre sizes (215/55VR16) fitted to a Volkswagen Passat.

Volkswagen Group has approved the John Bean Visualiner 3D Arago wheel aligner for all vehicle marques under the Group’s umbrella. John Bean, a brand within Snap-on Equipment, has reportedly developed a special version of the alignment system to meet VW’s exacting standards. As a result all authorised service centres can now carry alignment work to OEM specification.
