“One-Fifth of Fleet Cars Have Unsafe Tyres” – Kwik-Fit

Mobile tyre safety checks on company cars and vans, instigated by fleet managers and carried out by Kwik-Fit technicians, reveal that around 20 per cent of vehicles “require attention”.

Typical findings include tyres that are wrongly inflated, the tread depth may be close to, or below, the legal minimum, tyre wear may be irregular, indicating alignment problems, or the sidewall may be damaged. The analysis is based on a month of safety checks – in a typical month, some 490 site visits are made, with 22,500 vehicles inspected.

Modern Tyre Becomes a ContiNetwork Partner

Continental has confirmed its plans to expand the ContiNetwork beyond mainland UK by appointing Modern Tyre Group as the ContiNetwork Partner responsible for the whole of Northern Ireland.

“This move facilitates ContiNetwork’s growth into Ireland and marks the first phase of complete coverage for Ireland,” said the company in response to the news. Modern Tyre Group will be joining a nationwide network of independent truck tyre dealers that provide local, regional and national fleets with tyre management services and rapid-response tyre breakdown assistance.

Conti Gains OE Strength

Continental has strengthened its position as one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of original equipment tyres for passenger cars, claiming that one in four new cars leave the factory on Continental rubber. The international vehicle industry supplier can now boast a market share of 26 per cent.

The company ranks number four worldwide in the tyre business with vehicle manufacturers, says Conti, holding a 20 per cent market share in the NAFTA countries alone. In 2004 the manufacturer boosted volume sales to the global automobile industry by 12 per cent, and posted another five per cent gain in the first six months of 2005.

TIC Start Tyre Checks

The TIC’s tyre safety awareness campaign is once again taking up the challenge of raising through a series of tyre checks on the roads of the North West of England next month.

The four principle police forces in the North West – Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside – will combine with the council to mount a hard hitting campaign detailing the increased risk of having an accident, particularly in the wet, if a vehicle has worn tyres. Recent research by the AA Motoring Trust indicates that worn tyres contribute to one in ten accidents in wet conditions.

New Vans for Viking

UK wholesaler, Viking International, has invested more than £500,000 in distribution by replacing 34 of its vehicles with new Mercedes Sprinters vans for its nine warehouse distribution centres.

This investment further strengthens its fleet that already consists of 100 vehicles. Mike Curry, managing director for Viking International, explained: “We need to guarantee at all times that our customers get the best possible service and that means we have to continually invest in our company.

“These vans are our face to the customer and they cover considerable distances each year. It is essential that they remain in top condition to ensure that we can continue to maintain our reputation for service delivery.”

Hi-Q Wins Hendy Hire Contract

Hi-Q has won the contract to supply Hendy Hire’s rental fleet with a tyre management service. Hendy Hire has 12 daily rental office locations across the south of the UK with 1,400 trucks, vans and cars in its fleet.

As part of the new contract, Hi-Q will operate a drivers’ helpline on behalf of Hendy Hire from its dedicated customer call centre in Huddersfield. The tyre repair and replacement services will be provided by Hi-Q’s nationwide network of over 500 centres and a 24 hour emergency tyre service will be in operation for Hendy Hire customers requiring assistance during their rental period.

Bosch Celebrates ESP

Ten years ago Bosch was the first supplier to begin series production of its Electronic Stability Program (ESP) technology. What started as an option for high-end passenger cars is now available as a safety feature on most new cars and vans. The development of ESP can be traced back to 1983 when engineers at Bosch sought to optimise anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

To mark this milestone, His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, patron of RoadSafe, attended a reception at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in London to celebrate with leading representatives from the road safety and motor industries.

In a speech at the event, Prince Michael congratulated Bosch on the development and pointed out the important safety benefits that can be derived from the fitment of ESP to all vehicles. He also noted that the installation rate on new cars being registered in the UK had increased from 20 to 29 per cent in only 12 months

Kayaba has launched an all-new European 2005 catalogue for its range of K-Flex replacement coil springs. The 424-page catalogue contains over 3,000 different part numbers covering applications for cars, car derived vans and light commercial vehicles. Coil springs are a vital part of a vehicle’s ride control and are responsible for comfort and ride height. Kayaba recommend that coil springs are replaced every four years or 50,000 miles as general wear and tear can lead to reduced performance and safety.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Expands Service Centre and Adds Staff

Kwik-Fit Fleet has announced a major redevelopment and expansion of its Fleet Service Centre. The latest developments include taking on 10 new service centre operators, on top of the 30 recruited 12 months ago, and relocating the service centre to a newly-refurbished dedicated area within Kwik-Fit Financial Services’ call centre at Tannochside.

TIC Survey Shows Worn Tyres Up

The TIC has released its latest survey figures, based on almost 30,000 tyres checked from March to November last year. These roadside checks involved almost half of all UK police forces.

ATSE Pushes Cold Weather Tyres

ATS Euromaster is urging fleet managers to prepare their drivers for winter by placing orders for cold weather tyres before the end of July to ensure stock availability and delivery before the winter season sets in.

The retailer’s interest coincides with the UK tyre industry’s recent commitment to create a cold weather tyre market in the UK, as opposed to a winter tyre market.

Scotland’s Tyres give ‘Cause for Concern’

The number of worn and defective tyres on Scotland’s roads is still a cause for concern, says the Tyre Industry Council (TIC). Analysis from last year’s tyre checks has indicated that the number of badly worn tyres, having a tread depth at or below 2mm, is 17 per cent.

Roadside tyre checks carried out by Strathclyde Police late last year showed that 9.6 per cent of cars and light vans had one or more tyres below the legal limit.

More Tyre Safety Statistics

The TIC has released further results from last year’s roadside tyre checks that highlight an increase in the number of defective tyres on Britain’s roads.

West Midlands Police has revealed a disappointing seven per cent rise to 17 per cent in the number of cars and vans with defective tyres on the county’s roads.
