Vanstyle Encourages Van Owners to “Tame the Beast”

We’ve been bombarded with a multitude of Trinny & Susannah style homely to comely shows and home renovation programmes along the lines of ‘Changing Rooms’, but to date vans have been largely left out of this makeover mania. One UK company – Vanstyle – intends to change all this. While it won’t be coming to a television near you any time soon, the company is calling upon all van, SUV and truck drivers to join its campaign to give the nation’s vans the once-over with new wheels and accessories.

Ultimately every van or truck driver chooses his or her vehicle for its functionality, and this naturally shouldn’t be overlooked at makeover time. But Vanstyle says this “doesn’t mean the beast can’t be tamed”. In other words, why not make your machine look good?

Kwik-Fit Named Fleet News Top Fleet Industry Supplier

Kwik-Fit has beaten a string of companies responsible for delivering a range of solutions to Britain’s multi-billion pound fleet industry to be named Fleet Supplier of the Year by Fleet News. While Kwik-Fit Fleet has been a regular winner of the Best Fast-Fit Company title at the annual awards ceremony, which for more than two decades has been hosted by the fleet industry weekly newspaper, this is the first time that the company has beaten off competition from other sectors – including the likes of AA Business Services and RAC Fleet – to win the top supplier accolade.

The Fleet Supplier of the Year Award is designed to identify the organisation which has gone the extra mile in providing exceptional service to fleet customers and has ‘stand out’ service levels, products and staff and a commitment to providing the best products or services. The award was presented at a ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on March 18 and follows Kwik-Fit Fleet being named the nation’s top fast-fit company for an impressive 16 years in succession in the annual BusinessCar Awards announced earlier this year.

TIF: UK Tyre Replacement Market Over 34-35 million Units

The Tyre Industry Federation has announced that its estimates put the UK replacement car tyre market at well over 30 million units. The new figures, which include 4×4 and light van tyres, represent the first time an official estimate has been as high as 30 million units annually. The TIF data is based on figures contributed by the tyre manufacturer associations and the Tyre Wholesalers Group of the National Tyre Distributors Association. These indicate that sales into the UK market totalled 29.7 million units in 2007, before imports, retreads and part-worn tyres.

R H Claydon Relocates Scunthorpe Warehouse

R H Claydon has announced that it has relocated its Scunthorpe wholesale warehouse operation. R H Cladon has occupied a location in the Flixborough Industrial Estate since 1990 and has now “well out grown the site [and] moved to a larger location on the same industrial park.” The new branch occupies some 43,000 square feet and is served by a newly built loading bay to handle container traffic. This warehouse will better serve an expanded area that runs from the East Midlands north and east to the Scottish Border.

The location is said to have a larger holding capacity that will initially serve five delivery vans. This and the company’s other sales and service branches (at Bury St Edmunds, Swindon, Stockport and Falkirk) stock passenger, van, 4X4, light and heavy truck, agricultural, construction, industrial, small implement, Turf and ATV tyres – not to mention tubes and more.

Infleet Adds 500th Tyre Store to Network

Tyreforce (North West) Ltd recently took ownership of three new tyre service locations in the North West, with the company’s Southport store becoming the 500th Tyre Store to be enrolled in the Infleet network.
Tyreforce managing director Martin Burrows commented: “We are already a close working partner of Infleet carrying out specialised tyre service work for the RAC Patrol Vans and providing RAC’s fleet customers with Roadside Breakdown and Tyre Maintenance programmes. We are delighted to be able to register Southport and our other two new HiQ Stores in Preston & Manchester with Infleet.”

The Infleet call centre is managed by the RAC and it’s commercial division (RAC Commercial Vehicle Assistance) to provide assistance for its members and its corporate customers. RAC has an unrivalled reputation as one of the UK’s most progressive motoring organisations and Infleet MD Bill Hall says “[RAC] is the ideal partner to help us handle the additional complications of breakdowns and accidents.”

Chris Hufflett Appointed ATSE Group Operations Director

ATS Euromaster has appointed Chris Hufflett, 45, to the position of group operations director, completing an internal restructuring programme which has seen the country divided into four divisions, each with its own dedicated divisional operations director and divisional sales manager. He takes over from Vince McGurk, 48, who is joining parent company Euromaster Group to take on the new position of European operations progress director at Euromaster Group’s head office in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Hufflett brings extensive industry experience to the role, having been employed for the last three years as one of ATS Euromaster’s divisional operations directors, looking after South West England and Wales. Before joining the company in 2006, he spent more than 10 years at vehicle distribution and logistics specialist Walon, most recently as operations director.

Toyo Builds on “Fastest SUV” Fitment

Coal Distributor Switches to ATS Euromaster

Bagnalls, a Nationwide coal and slate distribution company, has appointed ATS Euromaster to manage tyres across its fleet of commercial vehicles. Bagnalls has reportedly opted for a joint Taurus and Bandvulc tyre fitment policy. The agreement will see ATS Euromaster support the company’s 17-strong fleet which ranges from Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans to 13 and 18 tonne Mercedes Benz Atego and Daf LF rigid bodied trucks.

E.G. Wholesale “Showing the Future of Wholesaling”

Horsham-based tyre business E.G. Wholesale (part of Elite Garages) has opened a new state of the art tyre warehouse and logistics operation in the West Sussex town. It will supply all its tyre customers across the south east. The operation was formally opened in December 2008 by Mark Brickhill, managing director of Goodyear Dunlop (UK). Brickhill stated, “Goodyear Dunlop are pleased to be associated with E.G. Wholesale who are certainly showing the future direction of tyre wholesaling.”

The new facility carries approximately 40,000 tyres on the shelf and – together with its two existing bulk tyre warehouses – offers one of the largest stocks and range of tyres in the South East. The company operates a fleet of 25 vans to cover its delivery area, which spreads from Bournemouth in Dorset to Ashford in Kent. All vans have satellite tracking systems to ensure timing and accuracy of delivery.

Roman Fleet Switches to ATS Euromaster for Tyres

Roman, a leading UK shower manufacturer and designer, has appointed ATS Euromaster to manage the tyres across its 78-strong fleet of light commercial vehicles and five company cars. The new agreement will see ATS Euromaster provide a complete range of tyre and fast-fit services on a nationwide basis, supporting a mixture of both short and long-wheelbase 3.5 tonne Mercedes Benz Sprinter vans, which are used to deliver shower equipment to retailers. The contract sees the Roman fleet fit a mixture of Michelin, Avon and Hankook tyres being selected as replacements across its vehicles.

Michael Spink, Logistics Director for Roman, commented: “The fleet leasing company we used to use employed the services of ATS Euromaster. When we recently switched to in-house vehicle management we decided to retain their service as it is second-to-none and we could see the clear cost benefits to us.

Scotland’s leading independent courier firm is equipping its delivery vans with winter weather Autosocks in a bid to cope with the treacherous winter road conditions in Aberdeenshire and the Highlands. Eagle Couriers has invested in the revolutionary new equipment and plans to use the tyre socks to ensure their drivers are as safe as possible on snow-covered or icy roads.

The company carries out many deliveries in the north of Scotland during the winter, and already uses safety equipment such as tyre chains, which they fit to their vans when they need to drive through heavy blizzards and snow drifts. However, by using the “tyre sock” technology, which was devised in Norway, they hope to improve their vehicles’ grip on the road when faced with less extreme weather conditions such as sleet and ice – which are less suitable for chains.

Allan McNish Opens New Unipart Distribution Centre

Unipart Automotive has invested £1 million in a new branch and Area Distribution Centre (ADC) in Solihull, creating 20 new jobs. Allan McNish, 2008 Le Mans 24hr race winner, officially opened the new 14,000 sq ft Birmingham South branch on Wednesday 19 November 2008.

This major investment by the motor parts distributor will enable it to better service the needs of motor trade customers, with access to over 25,000 product lines giving excellent off-the-shelf availability. A delivery service from the largest fleet in Birmingham, comprising 27 Unipart vans, will provide fast local delivery.

Bandag Adds New Sizes to R250 ED Range

Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions (BBTS) is adding two sizes to its line-up of Bridgestone R250 ED all-position radial tyres. Regional and pickup-and-delivery fleets now have more options with the new 255/70R22.5 and 275/70R22.5 tyre sizes.

“The R250 ED is suitable for use by pickup and delivery fleets, moving vans, auto haulers and rural school bus fleets. As these vehicles often experience tight cornering, this tyre is designed to provide sidewall protection from twisting, scraping and scrubbing, and tread protection from cutting and chipping,” says Guy Walenga, director, Engineering, Commercial Products and Technologies, Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire. “The addition of these new sizes allows us to better serve regional and pickup-and-delivery fleets in high-scrub urban or mild on/off highway environments, particularly for those using trailers.”
