(Tire Review) The last of the major tyre-makers has a new contract with the United Steelworkers.Union workers at Bridgestone Americas’ tyre plants ratified a new four-year master contract with the tyre-maker Saturday, brining the 2009 master contract negotiations to a quiet end.
In the US, Goodyear has rescheduled an investor conference call to discuss its new, four-year master labour contract with the United Steelworkers union. The conference call, originally set for 28 September as was reported previously on Tyrepress.com, has been moved to 14:00 (GMT-5) on Tuesday, 29 September due to a scheduling conflict. (Tire Review) Following the ratification of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co’s new, four-year master labour contract was ratified by members of the United Steelworkers union on 19 September, Rich Kramer, COO and president of Goodyear’s North American tyre unit suggested that, “This agreement reflects the commitment of Goodyear and the USW to continue to work together to achieve our common goal of world-class competitiveness.”
The United Steelworkers (USW) announced on September 19 that a new four-year agreement covering some 10,300 USW members at seven Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company plants has been ratified by secret ballot referendum vote, and comes into effect on September 21.
Tire Review – While ratification votes are still weeks away, Bridgestone Americas said it is satisfied with its tentative four-year contract with the USW, and that the union met its bargaining goals, as well. The tentative deal covers USW workers at Bridgestone facilities in Akron, Des Moines, Iowa; LaVergne, Tennessee; and Russellville, Arkansas.
Fresh reports say that Bridgestone Americas and the United Steelworkers have reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year master contract. The deal was struck, said reports, early Wednesday in Louisville, Kentucky. Neither side made any comment regarding the proposed contract. At four years, the Bridgestone Americas master union deal would match Goodyear’s tentative – but still not ratified – union deal in length. Michelin North America’s new contract with the USW covers three years, as most tyre-maker-union contracts have in the past.
In a letter to President Obama, David Hartquist, executive director of the Committee to Support US Trade Laws (CSUSTL), encouraged the President to support a petition brought by the United Steelworkers union.
The three-year contract BFGoodrich signed with the United Steelworkers for its Tuscaloosa, US plant is said to have had one of the lowest number of ‘no’ votes ever experienced by the local union chapter. "'We are pleased with the contract. We are pleased with the vote," USW Local 351 president Jimmy Price told local media. Price, who was on the union's bargaining committee, added that he felt BFGoodrich was "very responsible to give a fair contract."
United Steelworkers locals approved a new three-year master contract with Michelin North America. The pact covers some 2,500 workers at MNA’s plants in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In a press statement, Michelin North America reports that the three-year tentative agreement made with the United Steelworkers "meets the terms the company believes are necessary to retain its competitive posture and to help improve the viability of the BFGoodrich tyre manufacturing plants going forward.'' The contract, which covers Michelin owned BFGoodrich plants in Alabama and Indiana, was signed on August 15, and will now go before the USW executive boards at the two locations in question.

Goodyear and the United Steelworkers of America have agreed to an extension of their national contract, taking their agreement up to 29 August.
Following a contract extension between Goodyear and the United Steelworkers union, Michelin North America has also agreed with the USW to an extension of the labour agreement with company employees. The two parties, currently in negations over a new master agreement, have given their consent to a four-week extension, which expires on August 15.
Goodyear and the United Steelworkers have agreed to extend their existing three-year labour contract until August 15 in order to give the two parties time to negotiate the terms of a new deal. The new contract, currently under discussion, will cover seven US facilities.
“We remain confident that we will reach an agreement that is acceptable to both sides,” said Goodyear negotiator Jim Allen in a statement.
