(Akron/Tire Review) Union workers at Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire’s (BFNAT) truck tyre plant in Warren County, Tennessee, say they plan to go out on strike 22 July unless they receive a better master contract offer from the Nashville, Tennessee-based manufacturer.
(Akron/Tire Review) Workers at six Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) and Bridgestone Americas Holding (BAH) plants have ratified a new three-year master contract. The contract proposal was accepted by wide margins at BFNAT tyre facilities in Akron; LaVergne, Tennessee.; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Des Moines, Iowa; and Bloomington, Illinois. United Steelworkers (USW) workers at BFNAT’s truck tyre plant in warren County, Tennessee, previously rejected the contract. There was no word what action, if any, union workers there might – or could – take.
(Akron/Tire Review) Workers at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s wire plant in Asheboro, North Carolina, voted to be represented by the United Steelworkers (USW). A secret ballot election was held last week, with a final vote of 173-147 in favor of union representation. The USW said that Asheboro workers participated in a card check election in 2004 “that validated the USW as the official employee representative.” However, some workers there dissented, and legal action was taken. The National Labor Relations Board was brought in to conduct the secret ballot vote.
If you ask the USW in Bryan, Ohio, whether or not Roesler are going to buy Continental’s OTR tyre plant, they will say no. Ask Roesler management and it’s a completely different answer.
This week local representatives of the USW published a statement saying that the proposed plan to sell the CTNA plant to the German Roesler Group was off because the two sides had failed to agree on a satisfactory labour agreement. “We went the extra mile in trying to reach a new contract agreement,” said John Bowling, the USW/Continental Tire Unit chairman. “We just couldn’t get a deal.”
While Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) and the union representing factory workers (USW) reached a tentative agreement, one plant has still rejected the deal. Workers at BFNAT’s Warren County, Tennessee, tyre plant are the only group of factory staff to reject the contract offer. BFNAT reportedly extended Warren County, Tennessee, workers a “similar offer” to workers at the other plants.
(Akron/Tire Review) Workers at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Albany, Georgia tyre plant have voted against unionisation. Earlier this week, 1,220 Cooper workers voted at the plant. Representation by the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (USW) was rejected by 755 workers, while 465 voted for unionisation.
(Akron/Tire Review) The American USW union has told Continental that its plan to sell off the Bryan, Ohio, OTR tyre plant will be contingent on the new owner (German OTR retreader Roesler Group) negotiating a new contract with union workers.
USW executive vice president John Sellers told CTNA that a “successorship clause,” common in USW contracts, holds that any company buying a represented tyre plant must first reach a new master contract with the affected Local. This is the same clause the USW has invoked in the case of Goodyear’s sale of its agricultural tyre business – including its Freeport, Illinois, agricultural plant – to Titan International. The deal is still to be finalised.

(Akron/Tire Review) Members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers (PACE) have voted overwhelmingly to merge. The votes were held yesterday at concurrent national conventions of the two unions, both being held in Las Vegas.
The new union will be called the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International or USW for short, according to the USWA. The merger creates North America’s largest labor union, with a combined total of 850,000 members.
