US-based retreading advocate the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) launched its redesigned website at www.retread.org. TRIB says that enhancements to the site will continue to be rolled out in 2014, including additional features for the benefit of TRIB members.
By the middle of this year, Hankook Tyre Australia will distribute its products directly to retailers throughout the country. The company previously used a number of state-based distributors to supply the Australian market but began consolidating these operations some years ago. Volkswagen has approved Continental summer tyres for original equipment fitment on three of its models – 15 and 16-inch versions of the ContiEcoContact 5 and ContiPremiumContact 5 will be fitted to the Golf 7, the CC receives a 17-inch rim diameter version of the ContiSportContact 5 and ContiEcoContact 5, while the car maker says that the Beetle will be fitted with the 20-inch ContiSportContact 5.

According to filings submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, private equity firm MHR Fund Management has acquired nearly five per cent of Titan International’s shares and has options to boost its holdings to 10.9 per cent. On 9 January, MHR purchased 2.6 million shares in the tyre maker for approximately US$39.5 million. In addition, the company paid almost $28.2 million for options that give it the right to buy 3.24 million more shares for $26.3 million.

TriCan Tire Distributors, a Canadian company owned by American Tire Distributors since 2012, has acquired the wholesale distribution business of Kipling Tire Co. The acquisition of the Toronto-based firm further expands ATD’s reach within Canada.
Tyre manufacturer Petlas Tire Corporation has been listed amongst the top 100 export businesses in the growing Turkish economy. According to the company, Petlas has been exporting to more than 110 countries from all over the world and thereby increasing its market share. The goal is now to be in the top 50.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber will pay a quarterly dividend of US$0.05 per share of common stock, the tyre maker reported on 15 January. This will be paid on 3 March to shareholders who are of record as of 31 January 2014. The payout represents an annual rate of 20 cents per share.
Bruce Besancon has been appointed vice-president of marketing at Alliance Tire Group’s US subsidiary. Besancon comes to Alliance Tire Americas with more than 20 years of expertise working for Michelin North America, including five years heading marketing efforts for Michelin’s earthmover business unit.
In order to consolidate its operations in the USA, UK, Slovakia and China into one single business unit, Mesnac has created a new global business, the Mesnac Tooling Division (MTD). This division will provide tooling support to Mesnac’s Tire Building machine divisions in China and Slovakia and to its subsidiary Beijing Jingyie. The division’s technology platform will be based on the established Wyko brand but will also control Mesnac’s other tooling brands, which are primarily sold in Asian markets.
