Evonik to build new precipitated silica plant near major US tyre factories

An “upper double-digit” euro investment will help Evonik Industries supply growing demand within the North American tyre industry for precipitated silica. The company has announced plans to set up a precipitated silica production plant in the USA. The facility, which will be built in the southeast of the country, in “close proximity to major American tyre production sites,” is scheduled to be completed in late 2017. The overall project now awaits approval from relevant bodies.

Kenda Tires launches Klever S/T in USA

Kenda USA has added another offering to their Kenda Klever line. The Klever S/T is designed to help fill a gap in the SUV/CUV marketplace with a 60,000 mileage warranty and M&S all-season capabilities. It will be available to order on 1 June, 2015.

‘Unprecedented progress’ for Tamworth brake and clutch manufacturer

Now well into the 2015 race season, Alcon Components says this year has seen “unprecedented progress” for the Tamworth, UK brake and clutch manufacturer. Supplying products to Formula E, Alcon also reports US motorsport growth and increased work with original equipment manufacturers, describing the year so far as “a three-way success story”.

Yokohama to run US national rebate programme

Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) will run its latest USA national rebate promotion between 22 and 25 May. Consumers purchasing a set of four select Yokohama tyres, including the Advan Sport A/S, and Geolandar G055 and H/T G056, will receive a $60 prepaid Visa card.

Kumho supplies new Dodge Viper ACR with bespoke Ecsta V720 UHP tyre

The new Dodge Viper ACR (American Club Racer) street-legal race car is available in USA from September, and will be fitted with specially designed Kumho Ecsta V720 tyres in sizes 295/25ZR19 (front) and 355/30ZR19 (rear). Dodge claims the tyres provide the largest combined contact patch of any production car, having been designed and developed specially for the Viper ACR. The tyres, which feature unique tread patterns and compounds, have achieved lap times up to 1.5 seconds faster than benchmark race tyres used for back-to-back testing. They allow sustained cornering loads of up to 1.5g, Dodge adds.

Chevrolet’s full line of 2016 Camaro models will roll exclusively on Goodyear Eagle tyres in USA. Chevrolet’s sixth generation Camaro has been redesigned from the ground up, and Goodyear engineers worked closely with its development team to engineer tyres to support its performance. The project, which included more than 13,000 hours of tyre development and testing, resulted in three fitments “tuned to the Camaro chassis,” according to Johann Finkelmeier, Goodyear’s vice president of North America original equipment sales.

Cooper Tire completes fuel efficient tyre project, exceeds targets

Tyre development teams at Cooper Tire & Rubber have exceeded the goals set for it under a US government project, the tyre maker reports. These results were in part achieved by utilising materials that Cooper says are not used in tyres currently available on the market. Looking forward, the various technologies developed during the project will be put together in a single concept tyre, and Cooper is evaluating the use of technologies in commercial applications.

Bridgestone receives Edison Gold Award for guayule rubber activities

The research Bridgestone has conducted on the use of guayule-derived natural rubber in tyre production was recognised at the 2015 Edison Award Winners event on 23 April. The tyre maker went home with a 2015 Edison Gold Award for Innovation in Automotive Solutions.

Spain’s Industrias Del Neumaticos wins 2015 Miss Retread Truck Tire Contest

The centrepiece of the North American Tire & Retread Expo was the inaugural Miss Retread Truck Tire Contest, won by Industrias Del Neumaticos of Alicante, Spain. The winning company was awarded $5,000 along with a trophy. 22 retread tires were entered in the contest.

US Dept. of Energy gives Cooper Tire ‘gold’ in Texarkana

Cooper Tire & Rubber says its tyre factory in Texarkana, Arkansas has been certified as a gold level ‘Superior Energy Performance’ (SEP) facility by the US Department of Energy. The plant was recognised for implementing ISO 50001, and Cooper earned gold distinction by meeting the SEP programme’s additional standards, namely achieving a more than ten per cent improvement in energy performance over three years.

The Tire Industry Association (TIA) us officially opposing apparent tyre registration language in the “Generating Renewal, Opportunity, and Work with Accelerated Mobility, Efficiency, and Rebuilding of Infrastructure and Communities throughout America Act” or “GROW AMERICA Act” that was released on 30 March 2015. At the crux of the issue is the way which the it opens the possibility that independent tyre dealer must register who buys which tyre and send this information to the government at no cost to the consumer.

Amerityre appoints new CEO

Amerityre Corp. has named Michael Sullivan who has been chief operating officer of the company since 1 December 2014 as CEO. The appointment took effect on 1 April 2015. In February, Amerityre, which makes industrial tyre products and polyurethane tyre technologies, reported that it cut its net loss by one-third in the quarter ended 31 December to $128,465 on sales of $1.35 million. This announcement marked the firm’s 78th consecutive quarterly loss.

Friends charged with insider trading on Apollo/Cooper deal

Two men who profited from inside information regarding Apollo Tyres’ plans to acquire Cooper Tire & Rubber in 2013 have been charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, and parallel criminal charges have also been filed by the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts. The SEC is now attempting to recover more than US$1.1 million made through the illegal trading of Cooper Tire stock.
