Goodyear upgrading airship base ahead of blimp arrival

The Carson airship base, which Goodyear opened in 1968 to house members of its blimp fleet, is to receive major upgrades in order to accommodate the arrival of a new-generation Goodyear blimp at the site later this year. At the centre of this upgrade programme is a new hangar, the first in Carson. The inflatable hangar will be built out of 73 miles of partially translucent polyester fabric and will be almost nine-stories tall and longer than a football field.

US price rise for Kumho, Toyo tyres

The list of tyre makers intending to implement price increases in the coming time continues to grow. Two further manufacturers have announced price rises in the North American market: On 1 April, Kumho Tire USA will raise the prices for its car, light commercial and truck tyres by up to eight per cent. Toyo Tires USA is looking to lift prices for its car, light commercial and truck tyres by seven per cent.

Yokohama the ‘official tyre’ of US Spartan Race

Spartan Race is billed as the world’s best obstacle race series and is present in over 30 countries, including the UK, where those wishing to test their mettle can compete in three race classes – Sprint, Super and the dauntingly-named Beast. The concept has its origins and greatest presence in the US, and Spartan Race has taken on a new tyre partner in that market. Yokohama Tire Corporation has teamed up with Spartan Race in order to highlight its Geolandar range of light truck tyres.

Yokohama USA up tyre prices 7 per cent

Yokohama Tire Corporation will increase prices by up to 7 per cent on all of its tyres sold in the US, including consumer, commercial and off-the-road (OTR). The price hike becomes effective 1 April.

Giti Tire’s US factory to feature Cimcorp Dream Factory

A ‘Dream Factory’ solution for end-to-end automated materials handling will be installed in the Giti Tire passenger car tyre plant now under construction in the USA. Cimcorp reports that it and parent company Murata Machinery (Muratec) will supply a complete turnkey system that includes all required automation equipment and offers total system control, project management and seamless integration. The automated handling systems will be delivered and installed in three stages during 2017 and 2019.

Momentive acquires US silane plant

Momentive Performance Materials Inc. has acquired the operating assets of Sea Lion Technology, Inc. located in Texas City, Texas. Sea Lion is a contract chemical manufacturer that has manufactured silane products for Momentive for more than a decade, including silanes sold under Momentive’s NXT brand. The Texas City facility will continue to manufacture NXT silane as an integrated part of Momentive’s global supply chain, joining the company’s 24 other manufacturing facilities located around the world.

Cooper Tire distribution centre damaged by tornado

A tyre warehouse and distribution facility leased by Cooper Tire & Rubber in the USA sustained damage during a tornado just over a week ago, and as a result is currently out of operation. The site in Albany, Georgia was damaged on 22 January, and customer orders are being rerouted to other facilities.

US puts duties on Indian and Sri Lankan OTR tyres

On 4 January 2017The US Department of Commerce (DOC) made final determinations in the countervailing duty investigations of imported off-the-road (OTR) tyres from India and Sri Lanka. In the India countervailing duty investigation, the DOC calculated a final subsidy rate of 5.36 per cent for mandatory respondent Balkrishna Industries and a final subsidy rate of 4.9 per cent for mandatory respondent ATC Tires. The government agency established a subsidy rate of 5.06 per cent for all other producers/exporters in India. In the Sri Lanka countervailing duty investigation, the DOC calculated a final subsidy rate of 2.18 per cent for mandatory respondent Camso Loadstar and for all other producers/exporters in Sri Lanka.

Firestone’s Indycar contract extended

US-based motor racing sanctioning body Indycar has agreed to a multi-year extension of its contract with Bridgestone Americas Tire Operation for the Verizon IndyCar Series, thus confirming the continuation of Firestone as the official tyre to the series. Upon announcing the extension of its arrangement, Bridgestone notes that the brand has been involved in open-wheel racing since Firestone tyres were fitted to the winning car in the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911.

Chelsea FC playing a role in Yokohama’s Youth Soccer engagement

Yokohama Rubber’s North American manufacturing and sales operation has signed a multi-year sponsorship deal with US Youth Soccer. The agreement names Yokohama Tire Corporation (YTC) as the “Official Tire Sponsor of US Youth Soccer” and also gives YTC title sponsorship of the Yokohama Skills Challenge, a US-wide tour designed to help children of all ages develop a variety of core football skills in a fun, engaging way.

ATG’s Constellation truck tyre brand not coming to Europe, for now

Shortly after its acquisition by Yogesh Mahansaria and private equity company Warburg Pincus in 2007, the Alliance Tire Group (ATG) exited the car and truck tyre market and began building up a strong reputation as an off-road tyre specialist. A decade later and the company is revisiting one of these former businesses; this year, the Yokohama Rubber subsidiary is releasing a new brand of truck tyre. ATG is currently restricting availability of its new Constellation range to the US market, however it hasn’t ruled out introducing it into other regions at a later date.

Toyo Tire expanding R&D capabilities at US plant site

Throughout the course of this year, Toyo Tire & Rubber’s manufacturing operation in North America will expand its research and development capabilities in order to expedite the development of both original equipment and replacement market tyres. The company has not disclosed the level of investment being made in the Toyo Tire North America Manufacturing facility, however it will result in a 50 per cent increase in the size of the research and development team.
