Bridgestone adds aircraft tire retreading warehouse
Bridgestone Aircraft Tire USA, which operates a 160,000-square-foot aircraft tyre retreading facility in Rockingham County, North Carolina, is expanding with a new warehouse in nearby Madison.
Across the Atlantic they are called tires, while over here we use a “Y” and say tyres. This tag provides the latest tyre business news emanating from the United States of America (USA), whichever way you spell it.

China’s Guangzhou Vanlead Group Co. Ltd. reports that its subsidiary, Wanli Tire Corporation Ltd., intends to start work on a US$1 billion tyre factory in the US state of South Carolina during the first half of next year.
Although Hankook Tire is still hiring staff for its new factory in Clarksville, Tennessee and intends to hold an official plant inauguration ceremony towards the end of this year, tyre production has reportedly already started there.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has recognised Cooper Tire’s Tupelo and Clarksdale, Mississippi plants as members of its environmental stewardship enHance initiative. A voluntary programme consisting of three-year membership terms, the enHance initiative, which stands for “envision heightened awareness nurturing conservation and environmental excellence,” recognises committed environmental leaders in Mississippi that put in place environmental initiatives beyond those that are required.
Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has launched the new Tread Wisely mobile app. Designed to promote tyre and vehicle safety among teens and young adults, the app was created the app in partnership with the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS). Cooper says it empowers young drivers by putting safety information, how-to videos and unique features directly into their hands when and where they need it most. The app is free and available for download from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
Triangle Tire USA is opening its first US warehouse in Madison, Tennessee to supply off-the-road (OTR), medium and heavy truck as well as passenger and light truck tyres to its distributors and dealers. The 53,000 square-foot facility allows for future expansion, according to Triangle.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, currently the defending champions in the USA’s National Basketball Association, hail from the state in which The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is based. And upon entering into a multiyear sponsorship agreement with the Cavaliers, the Ohio-based tyre maker spoke of “home-state pride.” The deal, announced yesterday at the Cavaliers’ home arena, will see the Goodyear Wingfoot logo appear on player uniforms from the 2017-18 season.
Chelsea’s 1-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion completed the club’s Premier League championship with two games to spare in shirt sponsor Yokohama’s second season with the club. The Japanese tyre manufacturer has enjoyed the benefits of its association with the winners of what it calls the biggest and most prestigious prizes in world club football, with a “big increase” in “brand recognition,” according to David Seward, managing director, Yokohama HPT Ltd. Yokohama’s sponsorship also helped generate some publicity for road safety charity TyreSafe this year, as Chelsea became a member, and displayed the organisation’s messages at Stamford Bridge.

Hankook Tire has commented on its recognition as a General Motors Supplier of the Year. The company was one of five tyre makers to gain this distinction at the vehicle manufacturer’s 25th annual Supplier of the Year awards ceremony, which was held in Orlando, Florida at the end of March.
The Michelin Group has been selected by Forbes magazine as one of “America’s Best Employers” for 2017. On this year’s list, the company is ranked first in the Automotive Industry and 34th overall out of 500 large employers. Michelin states that this recognition highlights its commitment to “building a culture that enables every employee to leverage their unique talents to serve its diverse customers across the United States, and around the globe.”
Beginning this month, eBay will begin adding tyre fitting to the portfolio of automotive services it offers in certain markets. The online giant says eBay Motors will initially offer tyre fitting to motorists in Germany before rolling out the service in the US market this summer. eBay has yet to provide a timetable for the service’s introduction into the UK or other markets.
B&J Rocket America has named Caitlin M. Smith its new general manager of sales. The appointment takes immediate effect and sees Smith fill the position left vacant by Ben Graham’s departure from the company late last month. She reports directly to Andreas Müller, president of B&J Rocket.
The opening of Apollo Tyres’ Gyöngyöshalász plant, 100km east of Budapest, marks a significant event for both the company’s global aspirations and the Indian tyre industry – the 72 hectare greenfield factory, begun in April 2015, is the first inaugurated by an Indian tyre company to come online outside the domestic market. The importance was reflected in the event itself, with some of the plant’s cavernous warehousing housing around 1,300 guests, among whose number was the prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, who declared Apollo’s sixth global tyre manufacturing plant – its second in Europe after the existing Netherlands facility acquired alongside Vredestein – open on 7 April.

Nokian Tyres’ board of directors has authorized its management to sign a letter of intent with the respective authorities to build a new tyre manufacturing facility in America. The new greenfield factory will be located in Dayton (Rhea County), Tennessee, USA. It will concentrate on the production of passenger, SUV and light truck tyres that are sold exclusively or primarily in the North American market. The annual capacity of the factory will be 4 million tyres with an expansion potential in the future. About 400 people are expected to be employed.

The organiser of the North American Tire & Retread Expo (NATRE) concedes that last month’s event in New Orleans did not meet expectations. As a result, NATRE will not return in its current format, and the next scheduled show has been postponed while the concept is reconsidered.
