GM Issues Large-Scale Pickup/SUV Recall

Following numerous complaints from pickup and SUV owners, General Motors Corp has issued a US recall for 804,000 of its Chevrolet and GMC branded vehicles. The complaints refer to a problem caused by corrosion from road salt gets in between the casing surface and the sensor of the manufacturer’s ABS system. The problem is reported to lead to false readings, causing the anti-lock brakes to activate at the wrong speeds, alarming drivers and making stopping difficult.

Monza Demanding Circuit For F1 Tyres

The high-speed Monza Grand Prix circuit will test tyres to the limit, tyre suppliers Bridgestone and Michelin have reported. “Being the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar, the Monza GP is always a fast and furious race. The cars reach around 350km/h in four different places and in the approach to the first chicane, they are actually reaching close to 360km/h,” said Bridgestone F1 technical manager, Hisao Suganuma, adding:

Treadways Makes Hurricane Relief Donation

(Akron/Tire Review) Treadways Corp has become the first major US tyre marketer to announce a donation to help survivors of the devastating storm that lashed the US Gulf Coast. Treadways has donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

“Our hearts go out to all of those people affected by this devastating hurricane”, says Dan Wire, Treadways’ CEO. “We hope our donation will provide some help with much-needed supplies.” Donations can be made to your local Red Cross office. More details are available at www.redcross.org.

Toyo Reorganises its North American Business

(Akron/Tire Review) Toyo Tire & Rubber Co has reorganised its entire North American operations under a new umbrella company – Toyo Tires International – that will oversee all of its manufacturing, distribution and sales and marketing efforts in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Trelleborg Appoint First Executive Vice President

Trelleborg’s board of directors has appointed chief financial officer Bo Jacobsson as first executive vice president of the Trelleborg Group. The new appointment will be effective as of 1 October, 2005 in conjunction with Peter Nilsson assuming the position of new president and CEO.

“With his broad experience of management and administration in major companies, and the in-depth knowledge he has acquired of the Trelleborg Group over many years, Bo is a vital sounding board for us all within group management,” says Peter Nilsson.

Cost of Rubber Falls

The price of natural rubber has decreased by15 per cent to US$1.58/kg after reaching its peak of US$1.84/kg at the end of July.

Analysts believe that tyre companies should be able to offset the raw material price surge, as they did in H1, due to a hike in tyre prices.

Butadiene Contract for Titan Chemicals

In Malaysia, Titan Chemicals Corpn. Bhd has won a contract from the Korea Kumho Petrochemical Co. Ltd. to supply butadiene; the raw material used to make synthetic rubber. The operation will begin in 2007 and the five-year contract is worth an estimated 500 million Ringgits (US$ 132.8 million)

US Tyre Shipments Increase 2.2 per cent

US tyre shipments for 2005 are expected to increase by more than 2 per cent compared to 2004 due to continued economic growth in the consumer and commercial sectors.

Cooper Recalls Tyres

Cooper Tire is recalling several models of tyres in the US according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

There is a concern that the tyres affected could lose air pressure causing them to run under-inflated and to wear prematurely says an American news source.

Up to 50,000 of its tyres may be unsafe says the NHTSA. The recall effects the following tyres: Trendsetter SE, Mastercraft A/S IV, Dean Alpha 365 A/S and Starfire Flite-Line IV Tires sizes P195/70R14 AND P185/65R14.

Cooper is offering to replace the affected tyres, which were manufactured between 21November 2004 and 14May 2005, free of charge.

ATS Euromaster has appointed Hartnell Taylor Cook LLP and Gerald Eve as its new property advisors in a bid to reduce costs and improve the quality of its 525 properties.

Howard Elliot-Jones of ATS Euromaster, said: “We were finding the varied quality of advice coming from previous advisors wasn’t helping us to improve the operational value of our estate. Michelin Truck Tyres Achieve Endurance Record

US freight transport company, ABF, recently changed a set of Michelin front tyres after an enormous 483,000 kilometres, a new record for the French company’s tyres. The tyres were driven in North America driving conditions throughout their life and had not been retreaded. Manufactured at the Michelin plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the tyres were fitted as original equipment on a 2003 Sterling truck. This performance represents an improvement of more than 32 per cent over the current US average for a North American long-haul application, according to Michelin.

The End is Near – Time for a New Beginning?

The problems Continental faces in the US are more or less ‘homemade’. The problem is there doesn’t appear to be any solution available unless you call a total tactical retreat from the biggest market in the world a solution. In the event that this happens, it is more than likely that the company would call such a decision to cease selling tyres in the US a “strategic withdrawl.”

Michelin Covers US F1 Refund Costs

Michelin’s half year financial results, published last week, include provision for the cost of reimbursing ticket holders at this year’s US F1 Grand Prix at Indianapolis, when seven Michelin-shod teams withdrew from the race. The cost, estimated at around 12 million euros, has been accounted for in the operating income figure before non-recurring items, says the company.

Snap-on Announce Growth in Profits

Snap-on Incorporated, parent company of UK companies UK Equipment, Snap-on Tools and Sun Diagnostics, has just announced a 20 per cent rise in second quarter pre-tax profits to US$ 26.6 million.

Jack Michaels, Snap-on’s CEO commented on the company’s goals: “We continue to believe that by placing urgent emphasis on improved customer responsiveness, and maintaining our strong heritage of product quality, performance and innovation, we can substantially strengthen our brands’ global appeal.”

“These results demonstrate that our corporation continues to deliver profitable growth in a very competitive business environment”, said Brian O’Sullivan, general manager UK Equipment. “In recent years Snap-on has invested heavily in new product design and the rewards for this can be seen in the continuing improvement in the companies fortunes”.
