Goodyear Develops Biodiesel Fuel Hose

Goodyear’s Engineered Products division has introduced what it says is the first alternative fuel dispensing hose verified by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL). The products are being introduced this week at the NAHAD hose and accessories distributors’ annual convention.

According to Keith Collett, industrial hose marketing manager for the company, a complete line of hose, including Goodyear Flexsteel, Ambassador, BC Gasoline and BC Marina, are available to meet the nation’s growing demand for clean burning biodiesel and E85 environmentally-friendly fuels.

To some of his competitors Derek Zhang is known as the “godfather” of the aluminium wheel business in China. He has been dubbed with this moniker in appreciation of the rapid development of the China Wheel, which he leads as CEO, and his deep knowledge of the competitive situation in the enormous People’s Republic.

At the moment there are about 200(!) different producers in the country. Some are so small that they are liable to disappear from the map, or have already been forced to cut production. Zhang expects a large consolidation wave, whereby the capacities of the smaller companies are taken only partially from the market; many will be absorbed by the larger players.

Conti Workers in USA Move Closer to Strike Action

Union members at the Charlotte factory of Continental Tire North America Inc. have authorised the group’s leaders to call a strike, Mark Cieslikowski, president of the plant’s United Steelworkers Local 850, was reported as saying in the Charlotte Observer. But union leaders have “a long way to go” before calling a strike, as they are still trying to negotiate a new labour contract with the company’s managers, Cieslikowski said.

SmarTire OE Option on US Ambulances

Medtec Ambulance Corporation, an Oshkosh Truck Corporation company, is to include the SmarTire active tyre pressure monitoring system as an option for new and existing ambulance vehicles. Medtec is a leading North American manufacturer of custom ambulances and is the second Oshkosh Truck Corporation company to offer SmarTire products. The first was Pierce Manufacturing Inc., North America’s leading manufacturer of fire and safety apparatus.

Motorola Deal Increases Conti Market Capitalisation

The recent purchase of Motorola’s Auto Electronics business by Continental has increased the German company’s market capitalisation by 900 million Euros this week. Financial analysts appear to approve of the deal, describing it as a good fit and, at US$1 billion (812 million Euros), they feel that the price was right. The analysts also believe that the deal will quickly add to the group’s operating profits.

Natural Rubber Price Continues to Rise

The price of natural rubber is reaching a new high of US$2.16/kg; a rise of 22 per cent since January 1st and up 87 per cent since January 2005. As an example of the potential effect on tyre manufacturing, a 60kg truck tyre will contain around 24kg of natural rubber. Already this year, many tyre manufacturers have announced two lots of price increases and industry pundits expect further price rises if natural rubber prices stay at the current level.

Report Says “Give Motorists Data on Tyres’ Fuel Efficiency”

The Fuel Efficiency Study by the Transportation Research Board in the USA has called on Congress to allow the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to collect data on the fuel efficiency of different tyres and to make this available to the public. The Board believes that, were they given all the facts, motorists would opt for the most fuel-efficient brands. If this were to happen, no doubt low rolling resistance and fuel efficiency would assume paramount importance in new tyre design.

Chinese Tyre Manufacturing Continues to Grow

Industry figures show that, in 2004, there were 239 million tyres manufactured in China, with sales of 79 billion yuan (US$ 983 billion). Estimates for 2005’s production figures are in excess of 300 million tyres.

Falken Becomes the Latest to Increase Prices

(Akron/Tire Review) In the USA, Falken Tire Corp. announced a limited price increase, effective May 1. The increase will impact select sizes of Falken’s S/TZ04 and Ziex 60- and 65-series tyres.

Wennemer Says More Acquisitions On the Cards

Continental has recently purchased the Automotive Electronic business of Motorola and, say analysts, this deal looks reasonable. The acquisition price is only 60 per cent of sales (in line which the acquisition price of Temic five years ago), and only 10 per cent of Continental, which makes it easier to absorb and integrate.

Pirelli Announces US Price Increases in May

Due to the continuing rise in prices of raw materials, Pirelli Tire North America has announced that it is increasing passenger and light truck tyre prices by 3%. The price increase will be effective May 1, 2006, and will cover all product lines in the US and Canada.
