Uniflate Gains Pirelli Driver Approval

The Pirelli Driver Centre scheme – a pan-European network of approved independent fast fit centres focussed on customer service and industry best practice – is now recommending the use of nitrogen tyre inflation from Uniflate.

Malcolm Russell, manager of the Pirelli Driver Centre programme commented: “The purpose of the Driver Centre scheme is to offer motorists a network of trusted independent fast-fit centres. Clearly, quality of service is a major focus for us, and being able to recommend trusted suppliers such as Uniflate allows us to offer the centres – and through them motorists – the best possible service.”

Cooper Creates New ERP Position

Cooper Tire’s new ERP, or Enterprise Planning Resource, system is intended to standardise, automate and integrate the company’s data and processes into one system and provide access to information in a real-time environment. To assist in the successful roll out of this system, Cooper has appointed Ron Ranallo to the newly created position of vice president, ERP implementation. In this new role, Ranallo will supervise numerous business process owners who are tasked with designing and configuring the enterprise resource planning business processes and enabling software.

Chinese Tyre Exports Near 4-Year Low

The value of Chinese tyres exported to the US is nearing a four-year low after they plunged 37.5 per cent in October to $130 million as a result of swinging 35 per cent import tariffs imposed by the US government on 26 September 2009. According to the country's General Administration of Customs, China exported 240 million new tyres in the first 10 months of 2009, 9.6 per cent less than in the same period in 2008, sources reported. The export value of the tyres plummeted 10.5 per cent year-on-year, hitting $6.2 billion, and the average price for a tyre was said to be $25.40 (down 1 per cent year-on-year).

S&P Lowers Titan International Outlook

On December 22 Standard & Poor’s lowered its outlook on Titan International, citing the tyre maker’s higher debt levels. The outlook was lowered to “negative” from “stable.” All of the company’s ratings, including its junk-grade “B+” corporate credit rating, were affirmed.

China Seizes 8,500 Tonnes of US Waste Tyres

The US recently imposed tariffs aimed at preventing Chinese manufacturers from dumping cheap tyres in the market, and now China faces its own dumping problems of a different nature – customs officials there report seizing more than 8,500 tonnes of smuggled waste tyres sent from the US. According to the General Administration of Customs, some 366 shipping containers filled with tyres arrived in the coastal city of Guangzhou via Hong Kong between December 2008 and February 2009, where they remained until their discovery in December 2009. Three suspected smugglers were subsequently arrested.

In late December Cooper Tire & Rubber announced the appointment of Brenda S. Harmon to the position of senior vice president, Global Human Resources and Communications. In her new role, Harmon is leading all human resource and employee relations activities for the company.

US Michelin Prices Set to Rise

The cost of Michelin products in the US will increase as of February 1. Prices for Michelin and BFGoodrich brand replacement market commercial truck tyres, as well as Michelin Retread Technologies retreads, will increase by up to seven per cent. Increases for Michelin, BFGoodrich, Uniroyal plus private and associate brand passenger car and light truck replacement tyres will vary according to product line. Michelin brand replacement market earthmover tyres will be up to four per cent more expensive.

Quadra in Negotiations to Establish Waste Tyre Conversion Plant

Nevada, USA based company Quadra Projects Inc. has announced that it is in “ongoing negotiations” to enter into a joint venture with two companies – Renewable Energy Capital LLC and an “undisclosed” tyre supplier – to establish a waste tyre conversion plant capable of processing waste tyres into marketable by-products.

Dealers Win SEMA-Harvard Education, More Seats Available

Two lucky tyremen were among the five winners of seats for the Harvard University Manage Mentor Program, sponsored by SEMA, reports USA news source Tire Review. Carl Kazen of New England Tire Car Care Centers in Attleboro, Massachusetts and Mike Widmaier of Black's Tire Service in Whiteville, North Carolina won a special drawing at the recent SEMA Show to attend the 42-modular management education seminar.

Alcoa Invests in Adaptable OE Wheel Forging Technology

Cleveland, Ohio-based wheel manufacturer, Alcoa believes it has solved the problem of how to launch multiple new wheel programmes quickly without repeat capital investment. The company says that it has refined a process that generates “an infinite variety of styles from a single forged tool” through variations in design, machining and finishing. Using this process, Alcoa believes it can produce products that are amongst the strongest, lightest wheels available, but with the structural integrity to meet the toughest fatigue requirements. In terms of finishing too, Alcoa’s patented Dura-Bright surface treatment technology allows a wheel to be further differentiated not only by design and structure but also appearance and performance.

Titan Doubles Convertible Senior Notes Offer

Titan International’s December 13 offering of US$75 million aggregate principal amount Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes, due 2017, has been increased to $150 million aggregate principal amount. The offer’s terms and conditions remain as previously announced.

Titan says it intends to use the proceeds from the offering for general corporate purposes, including financing potential future acquisitions and repayment of existing debt obligations.

Sailun Tire Continued US Exports Despite ITC Ruling

In a bid to find out what how one of the nation’s more modern tyre manufacturers has been fairing since the introduction of the ITC tariff, Tyres & Accessories initiated the following interview with Chinese tyre maker Sailun Tire. Surprisingly, T&A learnt that the company planned to continue selling a similar number of tyres into the US, despite the hefty new taxes, which they refer to as T421. Our first question was what is Sailun’s position on the US’s recent decision to impose 35 per cent import tariffs on Chinese tyres?
