UAE Distributor ZAFCO Announces Retail Plans

One of the Middle East’s leading tyre distribution companies has announced its plan to open 65 automotive service outlets by 2012 at a dinner for its United Arab Emirates partners. ZAFCO is a supplier to the UAE domestic market, and a global supplier to customers in the USA, Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific and Australia, has revealed details of its ambitious expansion plans. The Dubai-based company is set to launch its own chain of premium quality retail outlets across the GCC.

Forbes Ranks Goodyear 40th “Most Reputable” US Company

Forbes Magazine has published its fifth annual list of the companies with the best reputation in the USA, with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company ranked 40th. Goodyear says the list is based on the Reputation Institute’s US Reputation Pulse consumer opinion survey, which aims to measure the overall respect, trust, esteem, admiration and good feelings consumers hold toward the country’s 150 largest companies.

Sold – American Tire Distributors Changing Hands for $1.3 Billion

North America’s largest independent tyre distributor has changed hands for approximately US$1.3 billion. In a deal announced on April 21, Equity firm Texas Pacific Group (TPG Capital) has purchased American Tire Distributors from Investcorp, Berkshire Partners and Greenbriar Equity Group, who acquired the distributor for $500 million in 2005. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2010. Pursuant to the acquisition, American Tire will suspend its planned public offering and listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

Bridgestone Provides Aid to Chile Earthquake Survivors

Working with local Chilean organisations and through the Embassy of Chile in Japan, the Bridgestone Group donated more than 11 million yen (£76,700, US$118,000) to support Chilean relief efforts following the earthquake that occurred on February 27, 2010. Bridgestone Corporation donated 3 million yen through the Chilean Embassy in Japan while its Bridgestone Americas subsidiary donated $50,000 (equivalent to 4.5 million yen) through Fundación Imagina. This organisation will use the funds to help build two new classrooms as part of its initiative to replace schools damaged during the earthquake. In addition, Bridgestone Americas’ subsidiary in Chile, Bridgestone Chile, S.A., provided aid equivalent to approximately $40,000 (equivalent to 3.6 million yen) by donating bags and school supplies through the Boy Scouts of Chile. In addition, through the scouting organisation, Bridgestone Chile donated 40,000 children’s toys collected from spectators at race events.

Exact increases will vary by product size, and the new pricing takes effect June 1st, 2010.

HiQ Discussing Expansion Plans at Franchise Conference

HiQ’s fourth annual franchise conference is taking place over the next two days at Albrighton Hall, Shrewsbury. All of HiQ’s franchisees will join retail director Juergen Titz and members of the brand’s lead team on Tuesday and Wednesday (20 and 21) to discuss performance and growth opportunities. Spare Tyre Cable Concerns Prompt US Toyota Recall

The risk that cable corrosion could lead to spare tyres coming loose and causing safety hazards has led Toyota to begin the voluntary recall of around 600,000 vehicles in the US. The manufacturer is recalling first and second generation Siena 2WS minivans sold between 1998 and early 2010 to address a problem that may occur on vehicles that have been driven in cold climate areas where salt is frequently used to de-ice the roads. Toyota says it is currently working to develop a remedy for this condition, and until this remedy is developed, customers will receive an interim notice instructing them to bring their vehicle to a dealership for a preliminary inspection. Once the remedy has been developed, customers will receive a secondary notice advising the customer of the remedy availability.

Danish recycling and separation technology company Recycling A/S has opened a new sales office in Düsseldorf and appointed Dieter Jerschl as sales manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Dieter Jerschl joined Eldan on 1 April. In conjunction with company’s existing sales partner, Erich Niebuhr BmbH in Rheinland-Pfalz, Dieter Jerschl will coordinate all international sales activities in the Germany/Austria/Switzerland region.

Receivership Inches Closer Following Rejection of Kumho Pay Deal

The thumbs down given by workers at Kumho Tires to a plan outlining wage cuts may jeopardise the company’s ongoing viability. According to the JoongAng Daily, a Korea Development Bank official dealing with the Kumho Asiana Group stated that “Since the agreement between the union and management was rejected, the workout process cannot continue. Unless union workers agree to restructuring, they won’t be able to save their company.” The deal, part of a larger agreement between Kumho Asiana and its creditors, would have permitted a 10 to 15 per cent reduction in wages and the removal of incentives. This would, notes the Korean newspaper, lead to monthly pay packets being up to 40 per cent smaller.

Before Baywatch and a questionable singing career, David Hasselhoff was best known as Michael Knight, the character he played in the early 1980s US series Knight Rider. Yet – and while we don’t wish to hassle the Hoff – the real star of the show was KITT, knight’s intelligent Pontiac Trans Am. This black car is fondly remembered by many who grew up in the 80s, and more than a few people will be thrilled to hear that KITT is making its television comeback in an advertising campaign for Kwik-Fit.
