Conti to Acquire 89.66% Stake in its Turkish Tyre Distributor

Continental AG reports it has agreed to acquire 89.66 per cent of Turkey based tyre distributor Oltas Spa. The purchase value of this shareholding, previously held by Turkish Fortune Global 500 corporation Koç Holding and other Koç Group shareholders, has not been disclosed. Approval of the deal by Turkish anti-trust authorities is pending and further approvals from the European authorities are not required in the case of this majority holding.

Oltas exclusively distributes Continental, Uniroyal and Barum branded passenger car and commercial vehicle tyres in Turkey, and has built up a franchise dealer network of 200 outlets. According to Conti, Oltas achieved sales of 39 million in 2007.

Price Increases For Michelin NA Products Announced

These days it comes as no surprise to learn of another price increase linked to rising raw material, energy and transportation costs. The latest to be announced comes from Michelin North America, who is increasing prices on a number of product lines.

US market prices for Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal passenger and light truck replacement tyres, plus those for private and associate brands, will rise by up to 12 per cent as of September 1. Michelin and BFGoodrich brand commercial truck tyres sold in the US replacement market will increase in price by as much as 8 per cent, also effective September 1. This price increase will also apply to Michelin Retread Technologies retreads, the company adds. On the same date motorcycle, scooter and bicycle tyre and tube prices will increase by up to 15 per cent on Michelin brand products sold in Canada, Mexico and the US. All two-wheel products delivered after August 31 will be invoiced at the new price.

MNA Adds New Laredo AWT II

Michelin North America has introduced the Uniroyal Laredo AWT II, designed for on- and off-road applications. The all-terrain radial offers improved tread life and wet and dry handling compared to its predecessor, the Laredo AWT, with its advanced polymer tread compound, stress-optimised contact patch and DuraShield construction, MNA said.

The Laredo AWT II will be available after July 1 in 21 sizes, including 13 S-rated P-metric and eight Q-rated LT-metric models. Three sizes of the original AWT – 31X10.50R15 109, LT285/75R16 LRD 122/119 and P235/75R15XL 108 – will remain in the line until April 2009, MNA said.

Fashion students at Leicester College have designed a wellie that features soles made from the tread of the Uniroyal Rallye 550, and its creators hold the selfless hope that the new footwear will make life easier for festivalgoers accustomed to slipping around in muddy fields. The boots feature a double-V tread pattern that disperses water from the contact area as quickly as possible to provide better grip. And as they are made from recycled tyre material, the more green aware amongst us can keep their feet dry and conscience clean at the same time.

Fast Car Commends Uniroyal Rainsport 2

The inaugural Fast Car Hit List awards have recognised the Uniroyal Rainsport 2, commending the newly launched rain tyre for its styling and handling in the wet. The Hit List awarded commendations in 14 different categories. All the products were judged on their quality, originality, desirability and value making the Hit List a real stamp of approval for all tuning enthusiasts to be on the look out for.

The Rainsport 2 was shortlisted in the chassis mods category. Fast Car said; “This distinctive looker can deliver impressive levels of grip in the dry but, more importantly for us drivers in the wet and greasy UK, can also astound with its ability to hang on in the rain.”

RainSport 2 from Uniroyal – Because Rain Happens

Statistics show that Europeans can expect around 140 days of rain each year, say the people at Uniroyal. And if this isn’t enough to dampen the spirits of any driving enthusiast, the company adds that over 30 per cent of all accidents occur when it is raining. But the good news is that a wet road needn’t wash away a performance vehicle’s handling characteristics – the new RainSport 2, from Uniroyal, is one of a number of performance tyres specifically designed to accommodate Europe’s less than arid weather conditions.

Released in February 2008, Uniroyal’s latest-generation sports rain tyre outperforms or matches its predecessor in all key performance criteria. Technical comparisons conducted by the manufacturer shows resistance to aquaplaning in bends to have improved by five per cent, and by three per cent on straight roads. The RainSport 2 produced a four per cent better result for wet road braking tests than the RainSport 1, handling was two per cent better and mileage an impressive eight per cent superior for the new tyre.

Michelin North America Announces Price Increases

Continuing increases in raw material, energy and transportation costs have been cited as factors for Michelin North America’s most recently announced priced increases for passenger, light truck, earthmover and industrial tyres.

Earthmover and industrial tyre prices, including items on back-order, will increase up to 8 per cent on products sold across North America as of June 1, 2008. Passenger and light truck replacement tyre prices will increase by up to 8 per cent for Michelin, BFGoodrich, Uniroyal, private and associate brand tyres sold in the United States. This increase is effective for all shipments scheduled on or after July 1, 2008.

Mini the Top Movie Car Ever, Says Uniroyal

The three Mini Coopers from the 1969 box office hit ‘The Italian Job’ have been named the top movie cars of all time in a survey conducted by Uniroyal tyres. The popular Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S’s in British blue, white and red beat off over twenty other nominees to take the number one spot in a poll of over 2,000 movie fans.

KITT, David Hasselhoff’s automotive sidekick in the early 80s television series ‘Knight Rider’, came in at number two, followed closely by James Bond’s glacier-friendly Aston Martin Vanquish from ‘Die Another Day’. The Volkswagen Beetle Herbie, also known as the Love Bug, crept into fourth place, while Dr Emmett Brown’s ever so slightly modified De Lorean DMC-12 from ‘Back to the Future’, took fifth.

Best Buys list, tyres have to be tested against a host of criteria and offer class-leading capabilities like dry and wet grip, quietness and wear rate. Uniroyal Launches RainSport 2

Uniroyal claims a successful tradition of sport oriented rain tyre, and is confident its new RainSport 2 will follow in this vein. The new tyre builds on the established reputations of the RTT 1, RTT 2 and Rainsport 1 – products combining safety on wet roads with sporty driving performance. These features were suitably demonstrated when the tyres were used in the legendary 24 hour race on the northern loop of the Nürburgring, as well as when they were fitted as standard tyres in the Uniroyal Funcup, the racing series held right across Europe.

New structures in the base and sides of the grooves, together with their V-shaped profiles, enable water to be channelled even more quickly out of the contact patch, whilst the silica compound makes even higher deceleration values possible. The design of the tread ribs has also meant shorter braking distances on dry asphalt. A wear indicator on the tyre’s shoulder reveals faulty track alignment, thereby preventing reduced mileage.

Conti Renews Uniroyal UK Distribution Agreement

Michelin To Raise US Prices

Michelin is set to raise prices on its replacement tyres in the USA by up to seven per cent, from March 3rd. The increase will apply to Michelin, BFGoodrich, Uniroyal and associated passenger and light truck brands. The company also plans a three per cent price increase on earthmover and industrial tyres in the USA and Mexico, effective February 1st.

Michelin Sets New Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America has introduced the Uniroyal Tiger Paw AWP II, which will come with a 70,000-mile limited treadwear warranty. The new tyre will be launched this autumn in 26 sizes (21 T- and five S-speed rated), and is designed for large, mid-size and compact sedans, and minivans.

MNA said the range of 13 through 16-inch sizes offered will provide coverage of 94 per cent of the broadline segment and 79 per cent of the touring tyre segment.

Michelin Puts Media Buying Under One Roof

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America has taken its North American media planning and buying business and consolidated at a single agency. The estimated $112 million account was placed with MediaCom, a unit of WPP Group. The move, which includes MNA’s Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal tyre brands, as well as Michelin’s maps and travel guides and MNA’s TCI tire distribution unit. The media planning and buying efforts, once spread around multiple advertising agencies, includes all trade and consumer advertising.

Advertising and promotion creative work reportedly will remain with those agencies currently in place.

Moving With The Times

With each passing year another crop of cars once merely thought of as old suddenly begin to be viewed in a different light. The things they were previously despised for – their age, outmoded styling and passé technology – become the very qualities that make them desirable. And thus, with no apparent logic, yesterday’s tat becomes today’s classic.

This is great news for vintage tyre specialists such as North Hants Tyres and Wheels, and ensures that the vintage tyre sector, although a niche market, remains one that is healthy. The team at North Hants, a family run company with close to 60 years in the business, has enjoyed steady growth in recent years – so much so that the past decade has seen the need for first an enlargement of the company’s premises and then a move to a new and bigger building. With the 6,000 sq ft warehouse in Fleet, Hampshire no longer sufficient to house the company’s ever expanding range, North Hants moved in 2005 to a whopping 25,000 sq ft premises in neighbouring Aldershot.
