Obituary – Stuart Marshall

Stuart Marshall, one of the UK’s best-known former tyre industry journalists, has passed away aged 82.

With a background in newspapers and public relations following wartime service in the RAF, Marshall became editor of TAB, the British tyre industry’s business magazine, in the 1970s. He also served as European editor of the US publication Modern Tire Dealer, and gained a reputation as a leading writer about, in the words of a colleague “the black round things that keep you on the road.” Marshall’s other writing credits include a range of leading UK publications including the Guardian, Illustrated London News and the Financial Times, for whom he was a regular columnist for more than 20 years.

Halfords Successful for Second Year

Survey Reveals Torque Inaccuracy

A recent survey from Norbar Torque Tools has revealed a worrying lack of awareness of the importance of properly maintaining torque-controlled tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers, with 24 per cent of respondents admitting that they never calibrated their torque tools.

Bridgestone adds FRT to SUV Range

Bridgestone has released its first 4×4 tyre that incorporates run-flat technology. Called the Dueler H/P Sport RFT, this tyre designed for upmarket SUVs offers added safety while maintaining comparable performance and comfort to the conventional variant of the tyre, released in March 2006.

Sapphire Increases Tyre Disposal Charges

Sapphire Energy Recovery has announced an increase in tyre disposal charges effective from 1 February 2007. From the tyre retailer’s perspective, the price rise equates to an increase of between £0.08 and £0.10 per tyre. Sales and marketing manager Ryan Mifflin explained: “Sapphire and the UK cement industry have invested over £15 million in state-of-the-art equipment and accessible regional facilities. We offer the only national coverage for tyre collection and disposal service, assuring our customers of a sustainable first class service. We have recently seen an increase in tyre size and weight with more 4×4, run-flat, and low profile sports tyres. These affect the amount of tyres per tonne which are likely to lead to increased collection charges to the retailer.”

Cooper Claims Discoverer Tyres Can Take You Anywhere

While Cooper is obviously confident about its tyres, the company has to admit that making your car float is beyond its capabilities, although visitors to the Lake District could be forgiven for thinking otherwise. To celebrate its first year of using Cooper’s Discoverer STT rubber on its fleet of 4×4 vehicles, off-road driving centre Kankku has launched an innovative advertising ploy. The extreme driving experience venue, based in the scenic national park, has hung one of its branded 4×4 cars from a crane just outside Windermere so that the town’s many visitors can’t miss the adrenalin-fuelled activities on offer.

A1GP Signs TV Deal With Channel Five

A1GP World Cup of Motorsport has significantly expanded its television reach by signing an exclusive broadcast deal with Channel Five in the UK. Across the UK, Sky Sports’ live race coverage will now be supported by a Channel Five highlights package, scheduled to be shown mid-week after each event. The partnership with the free-to-air terrestrial channel will mean that over 90 per cent of UK households can now support their national race team in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. The announcement is likely to please Cooper bosses who have put significant funding into the race series through its position of control tyre supplier.

Fleet Extends Michelin Trial Following Promising Results

UK operator Elite Transport is set to carry out an extensive trial of two types of Michelin tyres on its newly delivered fleet of fifteen Volvo FH480 6×2 tractor units. This decision has been made in light of findings after a single tractor unit was fitted with Michelin Energy tyres for a period of fourteen months.

Bridgestone Tyres Enhance Brera’s Handling

Sapphire Launches Tyre-based Landfill Engineering Product

Sapphire Energy Recovery has announced the launch of a new product made from scrap tyres for use in landfill as a leachate drainage blanket. Recovered tyre gravel (RTG50) is derived from end of life tyres shredded into 50mm chips. RTG50 has proven successful as a replacement for landfill drainage engineering providing a sustainable alternative to the use of finite aggregates.
