SmarTire Announces Restructuring and UK Closure

SmarTire Systems Inc. has given details of restructuring plans that involve the closure of its UK operations. Company president and CEO Dave Warkentin announced, “We have taken significant actions to reduce costs. Since September, our overall staff level has been reduced by approximately 50%. As part of this initiative, we plan to close our UK facility at the end of February, 2007. We do not anticipate that this closure will affect our European sales efforts.”

Kwik-Fit Fleet and Leaseplan Sign New Five-Year Deal

Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a five-year multi-million pound tyre repair, replacement and management contract with LeasePlan UK. The deal with LeasePlan UK, one of the country’s largest contract hire and fleet management companies with almost 120,000 funded vehicles on its books, will run until the end of 2011. The new contract builds on a business relationship between the two companies, which dates back to 2004.

New Hummer to Ride on Goodyear

While the original Hummer and the subsequent H2 found few friends on this side of the Atlantic due to their massive dimensions, the new Hummer H3 may have shed sufficient pounds to make it a less rare sight on UK roads. The H3 is 389mm shorter, 119mm lower and 73mm narrower than the H2, although at 4.78 metres (almost 16ft) in length it still cuts an impressive figure.

TyreSafe Highlights Pressure Washer Dangers

TyreSafe (formerly the Tyre Industry Council) has issued a warning outlining potential safety risks posed by equipment used by hand car wash teams in the UK. It appears that the industrial strength washing equipment used by such outfits, which are capable of dispensing water at extremely high pressure, can cause sidewall damage and degradation if aimed directly at a tyre, especially if the water is heated or if applied for a prolonged period of time.

New MD For Mahle

Automotive filter and engine component supplier Mahle Filter Systems UK has appointed Phil Everitt as its new managing director. Everitt has been finance director of the company since 2002 and has over 25 years’ experience in the automotive sector, holding senior positions with TRW/Lucas and Rover.

Maha UK Launches New Range of Low Cost Brake Testers

With the introduction of one man testing and Automatic Test Lanes, MAHA have produced a new range of brake testers to meet all MOT, ATL and any foreseen future requirements that may be introduced.

The basic MAHA IW 2 LON Brake Tester is approved for MOT testing for both classes IV and VII. The MAHA IW 2 LON basic brake tester is a modular system and can be manufactured to customer’s specifications. To update the basic IW 2 LON for AT specification will only require the addition of a weighting system and a PC.

Goodyear Announces Another Closure

Having already committed itself to closing plants in the US, Canada, UK and New Zealand, Goodyear tire & Rubber Co has announced its intention to close its manufacturing facility in Casablanca, Morocco, by the end of 2007. Approximately 150 jobs will be cut as a result of the closure.
