In keeping with the company’s aims to reintroduce discontinued tyres for motoring enthusiasts, Vintage Tyre Supplies has announced that original equipment replacement Land Rover tyres are now available in 600-16C 6pr at £129.50 and 700-16C 6pr at £135.50 (plus VAT). The Avon Traction Mileage cross-ply tyre was developed for serious off-road work and features rugged shoulder buttresses for even traction.

Stuart Marshall, one of the UK’s best-known former tyre industry journalists, has passed away aged 82.
With a background in newspapers and public relations following wartime service in the RAF, Marshall became editor of TAB, the British tyre industry’s business magazine, in the 1970s. He also served as European editor of the US publication Modern Tire Dealer, and gained a reputation as a leading writer about, in the words of a colleague “the black round things that keep you on the road.” Marshall’s other writing credits include a range of leading UK publications including the Guardian, Illustrated London News and the Financial Times, for whom he was a regular columnist for more than 20 years.

Sapphire Energy Recovery has announced an increase in tyre disposal charges effective from 1 February 2007. From the tyre retailer’s perspective, the price rise equates to an increase of between £0.08 and £0.10 per tyre. Sales and marketing manager Ryan Mifflin explained: “Sapphire and the UK cement industry have invested over £15 million in state-of-the-art equipment and accessible regional facilities. We offer the only national coverage for tyre collection and disposal service, assuring our customers of a sustainable first class service. We have recently seen an increase in tyre size and weight with more 4×4, run-flat, and low profile sports tyres. These affect the amount of tyres per tonne which are likely to lead to increased collection charges to the retailer.”

A1GP World Cup of Motorsport has significantly expanded its television reach by signing an exclusive broadcast deal with Channel Five in the UK. Across the UK, Sky Sports’ live race coverage will now be supported by a Channel Five highlights package, scheduled to be shown mid-week after each event. The partnership with the free-to-air terrestrial channel will mean that over 90 per cent of UK households can now support their national race team in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. The announcement is likely to please Cooper bosses who have put significant funding into the race series through its position of control tyre supplier.
