“In these hard times we are very happy that…” – So begins the organiser’s summary of Tyrexpo Asia, which during its seventh running attracted 2,985 visitors (a decrease of 5 per cent on the last time) and 135 exhibitors (an increase of 8 per cent) within an exhibition space unchanged from 2007. While these figures highlight how the exhibition developed, they only show a single snapshot. The sense of increased hesitation to spend money on travelling to and exhibiting at a show was in line with what one would expect in the current market situation. But what bare numbers do not depict is ‘visitor quality’, something that both the organiser and exhibitors noted to be “superior to very good.” Furthermore, Tyrexpo Asia also provided an ideal platform for tyre wholesalers and their suppliers.
Since its establishment in 1977, Turkish wheel manufacturer Jantsa has constantly worked towards building up and expanding its export business. Today its wheels are exported to over 80 countries worldwide, Jantsa export area manager Europe Omar Oztan told Tyres & Accessories. In fact, three out of every four wheels produced by Jantsa is destined for export. A region of increasing interest for the Turkish company is Southeast Asia. For this reason the company decided this year to once again exhibit at Tyrexpo Asia.
There is no doubting that the Shanghai representative office opened by Marangoni in the summer of 2007 has developed since its initial establishment. Talking with Tyres & Accessories at the sidelines of Tyrexpo Asia in Singapore, where the Marangoni Group was also exhibiting, office manager Marcello Gambarini stated that the Italian retreading and tyre business already has a seven-strong sales team operating in China and the 30-plus year tyre industry veteran added that Marangoni has now reached “the end of its preparation phase.” This means that Marangoni in China is ready to supply its tread material and retreading products to the industry. Rather than being used in Marangoni-owned factories these products will be used by partners, Gambarini disclosed, also noting that the company’s premium Ringtread products and top of the line machinery do not at present feature on the Chinese market product list; there isn’t as yet a great demand for these items within the country’s growing retreading industry.
Ever since tyres first rolled onto the scene, there has also been a need for tyre repairs. For users of earthmover tyres, which are often used in intense operating conditions, tyre repair represents a particularly substantial contribution towards the maintenance of their value – the costs incurred with these tyres can quickly amount to a high five-digit figure. Since the early 1970s British company Monarch Vulcanising Systems has entirely dedicated itself to this niche market – with continued success, as company president Toni Elderfield shared during Tyrexpo Asia.
Tyrexpo Asia
Reports from this year’s Tyrexpo Asia exhibition in Singapore have been positive, with show attendees commenting on a good turnout and definite signs of flourishing business despite current global conditions. Following a full schedule of meetings with industry representatives at the show, Tyres & Accessories is proud to bring you its 2009 Tyrexpo Asia review. A comprehensive report on the Singapore show can be found in our next edition.
Born to Perform
If any aspect of the tyre business can at all lay claim to coolness, it is the high performance tyre segment. Manufacturers naturally make the most of this when promoting their wider product ranges, yet the performance tyre sector is a very important business in its own right. Healthy profit margins mean companies are keen to see continued market growth, and the production of high performance tyres is increasingly becoming a means of continued existence for plants located in higher cost countries following the flight of mass-market manufacturing to other parts of the world. Don’t miss the May edition of Tyres & Accessories, when we feature the latest news from the high performance tyre world.
Enjoying an Active Retirement
As we get older we are admonished to regularly exercise our bodies, to – ‘use it or lose it’. Vintage and classic cars are no different. A full appreciation of yesteryear’s vehicles can only be gained by keeping them on the road instead of gathering dust in a static museum display, but for a full and active retired life, these cars require a little more TLC than average – including the correct tyres. Thankfully, number of firms have dedicated themselves to ensuring these tyres remain available long after wider volume production ended. In May, Tyres & Accessories returns to the world of cross-ply and beaded edges to bring you its vintage tyre feature.
TyrexpoAsia 2009 has been described as “an important platform for buyers and sellers and key decision makers in the global tyre and equipment market,” by prominent Singapore Member of Parliament Inderjit Singh MP. Mr Singh made the remarks during the show’s opening today (Tuesday 24th March) at the Singapore Expo Centre. He told a reportedly packed audience that the exhibition “created valuable opportunities to tap into a wealth of networking and business opportunities for event organisers and business delegates.”
Mr Singh, the deputy government whip, said that the automotive sector will be a key beneficiary of the success of Singapore as a centre for the rubber and tyre industries. The country’s pivotal position in the Asian tyre market is underlined by the presence of major companies with headquarters in the island state.
Stamford Tyres has been busy this past year. The Singapore based company brought a number of new products to market in 2008, including the Sumo Firenza ST07 range. Initial production began in mid-2008, with new sizes being gradually introduced throughout the rest of the year. The complete range, which covers 13 to 16-inch rim fitments in 60 and 70 series, includes 26 sizes in total. The ST07 features a directional tread pattern that features twin centre grooves for water drainage, and slash sipings intended to reduce noise levels and effect faster water drainage.
In a world where performance, safety and superiority rule, Kenda says it is marking itself out from the crowd. The Taiwanese manufacturer reports that it has for some time focused on reducing tyre noise, and its low noise tyres are now successfully marketed in many global markets – clear favourites amongst millions of commuters, adds Kenda. The automotive industry allows little or no room for mistakes and substandard quality levels, the company comments, and says it should therefore come as no surprise that Kenda puts safety, innovation and reliability at the core of its operation.
Preview: Tyrexpo Asia 2009
It’s not just an excuse for a spot of sightseeing and the opportunity for some authentic and delicious Asian food…with the Asian tyre industry and market developing at an astonishing rate, those wishing to participate in this region in a serious way really do need to be where the action is. In late March the Tyrexpo Asia exhibition returns to Singapore, this time round joined by the IRSG’s World Rubber Summit. And with the exhibitor list for the 7th Singapore show already topping 120 as of last December, Tyrexpo Asia is, as Paul Farrant, from exhibition organiser ECI, an opportunity to “deliver much-needed vitality and innovation into the global market”. Next month’s Tyres & Accessories presents a preview of the upcoming show.
Old Tyres Never Die…
Regardless of how asymmetric a tyre’s tread is, its green contribution or how many compounds are squeezed into the mix, sooner or later it is going to be removed from the rim and flipped onto the scrap pile. But what for the motorist is the end of the story is for the tyre itself the beginning of a new journey that will see it put to other uses. Follow your old tyres into the ‘afterlife’ in February when we feature the growing sector that deals with tyre collection, recycling and disposal.
The high regard in which Tyrexpo Asia is held by the Singapore government has been recognised by the announcement that the country’s Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, will officially open the exhibition as Guest of Honour at the Singapore Expo Centre on Tuesday, 24th March this year.
Ministerial endorsement of the show has been warmly welcomed by organisers ECI International, with managing director Paul Farrant commenting: “We are extremely grateful to the Minister for agreeing to be our principal Guest of Honour; his involvement will add to the sense of occasion at the opening event as well as signifying the economic importance the Singapore government attaches to the expo.”
Seeing the positive in the current global economic doom and gloom, the organiser of next March’s Tyrexpo Asia says the exhibition is ready to act as an international tyre forum that will serve to help businesses weather the credit-crunch by introducing cash-conscious buyers to volume-chasing suppliers and manufacturers.
With tyre and equipment businesses under pressure around the world from falling automotive sales and low consumer confidence, ECI International believes the stage is set for the exhibition to deliver much-needed vitality and innovation into the global market. “Every business is looking at its costs and margins, so the opportunity to meet new suppliers and distributors who can help achieve efficiencies has never been more important,” said ECI’s Paul Farrant.
The International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) is to stage its next World Rubber Summit alongside TyrexpoAsia09. The news means delegates, speakers and exhibitors from both events can take advantage of the enormous networking and information sharing opportunities provided. Making the announcement, Dr Hidde Smit, the IRSG’s secretary-general, said: “Joining forces with TyrexpoAsia is a perfect opportunity for us to add real value to our World Rubber Summit in Singapore. I know this will be welcomed by the hundreds of delegates, speakers and high profile figures from the global rubber industries who will be in Singapore next March.
Market-leader in independent tyre, accessory and equipment shows, ECI International has launched a newly overhauled website, eci-international.com.
The site features improved graphical presentation and the ability to navigate around the site with greater ease. Also available on the site is an array of information on ECI’s three forthcoming exhibitions: Tyrexpo Asia 2009 at the Singapore Expo Centre between 24-26 March 2009; Brityrex in Central Manchester (G-MEX) from 22-24 September 2009; and Tyrexpo Africa in Johannesburg during March 2010.
The company has also relocated its European office to Speldhurst Business Park in Kent.
