We’re in the final week of Tyre Safety Month, and TyreSafe is reminding Britain’s motorists that no matter what safety technology their vehicle is equipped with, it won’t work unless their tyres are roadworthy.
Halfords has been drawing motorists to a two-minute tyre safety video game to test drivers’ knowledge during Tyre Safety Month. The game, 20,000 Miles in Two Minutes, has condensed a tyre’s 20,000-mile lifespan into two minutes – testing how drivers will react to and overcome road hazards as they make their way along a dual carriageway.
TyreSafe has calculated that UK motorists waste more than £600 million worth of fuel due to tyre underinflation. Using data from Michelin’s Fill Up With Air survey showing that 57 per cent of vehicles are driven on underinflated tyres, as well as information sourced from the Department for Transport and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, TyreSafe is tying the economic argument for ensuring tyres are correctly inflated alongside safety concerns for this year’s Tyre Safety Month. Referring both to the general awareness of tyres as a vital safety component and rhetorically to question why drivers would not check their tyres at least once a month, his year’s October campaign asks Britain’s motorists directly: “What’s Stopping You?”
Vehicle subscription specialist Wagonex is writing to all its subscribers – even those on the shortest one-month arrangements – to urge them to check their tyres regularly. The move is part of Wagonex’s support of TyreSafe’s annual Tyre Safety Month, which this year stresses the importance of regular inspections.
Breakdown organisation Gem Motoring Assist is urging motorists to make monthly tyre tread and pressure checks in support of TyreSafe’s Tyre Safety Month. Gem recommends a minimum tread depth of 3mm over and above the legal minimum of 1.6mm on the grounds of improved water displacement. Gem’s ‘How to’ guides include short videos on checking […]
October is Tyre Safety Month, and for this year’s annual campaign, TyreSafe is asking Britain’s motorists What’s Stopping You? To educate drivers on the importance and benefits of tyre safety, the association has developed what it calls “impactful, and realistic depictions of scenarios involving families, loved ones and young drivers.” It says these will “resonate with a range of audiences and highlight the potential stakes of driving on defective tyres.”
The rise of electric vehicles, continuing to set a good pace of growth in UK and European markets despite the difficulties facing new car sales over the last 18 months, is one of the central pillars of mobility’s dominant megatrend, sustainability. Given the UK’s growing demand for the various forms of electric-powered cars – battery electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and mild hybrid electric (MHEV) – it is clear that servicing this section of the market will be vital in the long-term to tyre fitters. At the same time numbers remain relatively small in comparison to the level of interest they generate, though the growth is impressive.

TyreSafe is advising owners of electric vehicles (EVs) to “pay close attention to the tyres they choose when the originals need replacing” because “increasingly, the tyres fitted are specifically designed for use on EVs and can be significantly different to the ‘normal’ tyres…”. Specifically, TyreSafe is warning EV owners that fitting the wrong type of tyre could result in “loss of range, extra noise, accelerated wear and the risk of failing while being driven, which could result in a serious incident”.
TyreSafe has revised the categories and refreshed judging criteria for its 2021 Awards. Two changes stand out. Firstly, there are fewer categories this year, which could mean competition will be more intense. And secondly, TyreSafe will not be holding a face-to-face Award ceremony for the second year running this year. However, winners will have the opportunity to celebrate via a social media activity and video submissions are also eligible this year.
Uncertainty about the safety and logistics of foreign travel means more holidaymakers will drive to other parts of the UK. YouGov data shows 47 per cent of British holidaymakers are planning to visit another part of the country in 2021, with many relying on their vehicle to get them to their destination. This rise in longer car journeys has prompted TyreSafe to remind drivers that there are more tyre-related incidents on the roads in summer than at any other time of the year.
TyreSafe is urging riders to remember tyre safety as part of The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) THINK BIKE week. The campaign, which runs from 23 April to 3 May, is being spearheaded by Fire and Rescue Services across the country and 40 partner agencies, including TyreSafe. THINK BIKE highlights the need for riders to wear the right kit and ‘brush up’ on their riding skills as so many will have had an exceptionally long time out of the saddle due to Lockdown. Another key message is on bike maintenance and ensuring machines are in good roadworthy condition, especially the tyres.
This year’s TyreSafe Briefing will take place online on Thursday 23rd of September at 14:00. The briefing will feature the launch of Tyre Safety Month materials 2021, with attendees the first to see the wide range of innovative new resources available to our supporters and partners.
Driving safety charity TyreSafe has given drivers a timely reminder to spare a thought for their vehicles’ tyres in the days and weeks before lockdown ends. Many vehicles won’t have been used much since Christmas and most of those that have are likely to have only been used for short trips. While it’s tempting to put maintenance checks on hold, TyreSafe is advising drivers to check their vehicle’s tyres during lockdown to potentially save themselves money in the long run and reduce the risk of a tyre-related incident when they do return to the roads.
The Micheldever Group recorded its tenth TyreSafe Award in 2020, as Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) and Protyre recorded their respective third and seventh consecutive victories in their categories. MTS won Wholesaler of the Year, while Protyre retained the Large Retailer of the Year accolade. Micheldever also paid tribute to MTS customer Stone Tyres, which swept the board at this year’s event with a hat-trick of awards.
