According to information obtained by TyreSafe under a Freedom of Information request, more than 2.2 million cars in the UK failed their annual MoT test last year due to the condition of their tyres. Commenting on this data supplied by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, the safety organisation’s chairman, Stuart Jackson, said it “beggars belief” that so many cars fail because of unsafe or illegal tyres.
Remember, remember the fifth of November…TyreSafe has issued a reminder to tyre retailers, manufacturers, car companies and other organisations with an involvement in tyre safety to submit their entries into this year’s TyreSafe awards ahead of the 5 November deadline.
Cheshire’s police force has joined the county’s Fire and Rescue Service as a member of TyreSafe, months after the latter emergency service was made TyreSafe’s 2013 emergency services award winner. “We are delighted to welcome Cheshire Police on board and look forward to developing some highly effective initiatives with them,” comments Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.
TyreSafe has welcomed The Camping and Caravanning Club as the latest organisation to become a supporter of its road safety campaigning activities.
As the world’s oldest club for lovers of camping and caravan getaways, The Camping and Caravanning Club represents the interests of more than half a million members. As such, its involvement in TyreSafe campaigns is set to raise awareness about the importance of correctly maintained tyres among the UK’s 650,000 caravan and motorhome owners.

Road Safety GB has become an official supporter of Tyre Safety Month organised by TyreSafe. As a national road safety organisation that includes representatives from many groups across the UK, such as local government road safety teams, Road Safety GB’s involvement is seen as boost that will raise awareness about October’s campaign further than ever before, helping to make the UK’s roads safer.
Stuart Jackson, Apollo Vredestein UK managing director and Tyresafe chairman, was elected as chairman of the Tyre Industry Federation (TIF) during the umbrella association’s booard meeting during that last month. While it is early days in the incumbent’s tenure, there are early indications that there will be developments within the wider TIF strategy and that members will be looking at areas of common ground between the various member associations. Speaking to Tyres & Accessories on the sidelines of an Apollo Vredestein event in Manchester, Jackson described the news as “an honour”.
TyreSafe is promoting tyre safety on the school run following research carried out by one of its members, which found that more than 30 per cent of cars dropping off children at one Shropshire primary school were fitted with illegal tyres.
The ever-swelling ranks of TyreSafe gathered at St Johns Hotel, Solihull to launch the 2014 edition of Tyre Safety Month. Chairman Stuart Jackson, enthusiastically wielding an enlarged coin, demonstrated the well-established 20p test during his introduction of the “driving rain, driving safe” theme; the test is particularly relevant to this year’s tread depth focused theme of aquaplaning. In 2013 tyre pressure took centre stage, but with 2013-14 being the wettest winter on record, and October usually the wettest month of the year anyway, TyreSafe has chosen to present a core message informing drivers of the importance of tread depth in combating what is arguably the most spectacular and frightening road safety phenomenon – in addition to reinforcing other messages, such as pressure, Jackson adds.
Companies planning on supporting this October’s Tyre Safety Month campaign can now register to receive their free campaign materials. The month-long, TyreSafe-organised campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of driving on tyres with adequate tread depth, and after the wettest winter on record will include essential advice about minimising the risk of aquaplaning.
Entries for the second annual TyreSafe awards are now open, and interested parties have until 5 November to nominate organisations that help reduce tyre related road casualties for a 2014 honour.
Dangerous and illegally sold part worn tyres will be one of the topics of conversation at this year’s national Trading Standards conference, after safety campaign group TyreSafe confirmed its participation in the event.
Running for three days from 30 June at the Harrogate International Centre, the event is the biggest gathering of trading standards officers and enforcement professionals in the UK. With its main theme of ‘changing behaviour’, TyreSafe sees the event as an ideal platform to continue its ongoing education and awareness activities designed to reduce the number of part worn tyres being illegally sold in the UK.
TyreSafe has continued to spread its reach to all parts of the extended automotive sector by signing Evans Halshaw as its latest member. One of the UK’s largest dealer groups, Evans Halshaw’s 120 sites across England, Scotland and Wales will now have access to a wide range of tyre safety information and advice for use within its outlets, helping to keep its customers informed and safe on the road.
TyreSafe is providing Scooter riders with free advice and tyre maintenance tips, designed to ensure that they remain safe on the road, whatever the conditions.

Stuart Jackson has been re-elected as the chairman of not-for-profit road safety campaign group TyreSafe.
