New plant to facilitate Nexen’s global OE plans

Nexen Tire’s new factory in Changnyeong, South Korea has entered service, and according to Joo-Ho Song, senior managing director, global marketing at Nexen, the facility will play a key role in the tyre maker’s ambitious plans. Output at Changnyeong will initially be a modest 3 million units in 2012 and will build up, aided by five planned further factory expansions, to 21 million units – 60,000 tyres a day – by 2018. By that date, Nexen says it will have invested a total of 1,200 billion won (£650 million) in the plant.

Changeable UK weather calls for adaptable tyre: Bridgestone

Noting the changeable British climate in the month of May alone, Bridgestone UK has once again suggested the benefit of fitting its A001 Weather Control all season tyre. In recent months the unpredictable weather has left motorists battling vastly contrasting conditions in short periods of time. In extreme cases drivers have had to deal with weather ranging from heavy rain, sun, even hail and snow during the same journey. The last week’s hot weather replaced an unusually cold early May, with hail stones battering the Tyrepress.com office window in Stoke-on-Trent earlier in the month.

TyreSafe advises tyre checks ahead of bank holiday

With hot weather continuing to prevail across the UK, TyreSafe is pre-empting the arrival of millions of drivers on the roads in the coming Spring Bank Holiday weekend – extended by the presence of the Queen’s Jubilee celebration on 5 June. Falken to exhibit new ZE914 amidst range at Reifen 2012

Following the launch of four new tyres to the European market in 2012, Japanese manufacturer Falken says will continue to reflect the changes of original equipment requirements as it develops its tyre range – a message that it will transmit via its booth at Reifen 2012. Falken told Tyrepress.com that it continues to experience growth in the passenger car market, and its movement into a number of growing niches includes the new flagship Azenis FK453 and innovative Ziex ZE914, both of which will be displayed. Alongside those, Falken’s WildPeak off-road tyre and the FK453CC, a tyre specifically for the European performance SUV market, will also take prominent positions.

GT Radial UK dealers experience WinterPro tyre in Arctic conditions

16 tyre dealers from GT Radial’s UK Performance Centres and distributor, Micheldever have braved Arctic conditions to complete winter tyre testing workshops at the company’s Mellatracks Proving Ground in Ivalo, Finland. The tyre professionals travelled to Test World, based several hundred kilometres inside the Arctic Circle in the northernmost area of Finnish Lapland, in order to complete four separate tyre tests in temperatures as low as -15°C. Pro-Align’s QuickCheck provides quick alignment diagnostics

Wheel alignment equipment distributor, Pro-Align has launched a new complementary alignment diagnostic system. QuickCheck provides a rapid six point preliminary alignment reading, helping workshops to pre-filter potentially misaligned vehicles in less than a minute, according to Pro-Align. The company says the diagnostic system will allow workshops to improve the efficiency and returns of their existing equipment.

Wheelwright improves e-Commerce Calibre

Kent-based wheel distributor Wheelwright launched its Calibre Couture range onto the UK market and made substantial upgrades to its website, including an improved e-Commerce platform, in the first quarter of 2012. Tyrepress.com spoke to Wheelwright managing director, Kevin Greer, who presented details on why the Calibre range has been “a real success story” following its introduction. Since its launch the distributor has introduced retro, utility and the Couture prestige ranges to its private wheel range, making Calibre its “umbrella brand”. Greer also talked Tyrepress.com through the upgraded website, which aims to serve modern shopping habits, without treading on the toes of the retail businesses it supplies.

GT Radial developing new winter products

GT Radial’s representatives presented details about the company's new GT Radial WinterPro HP during the dealer visit to its winter testing facility in Ivalo, Finland. A “high performance winter tyre” that was under development in Ivalo this winter, the tyre will be manufactured in Indonesia.

Dunlop India talking big to hold off liquidator

Even the most optimistic Tyrepress.com reader may raise an eyebrow at Dunlop India’s claim of being near to reopening its Sahaganj factory within the coming week. This is, after all, the plant inspected by West Bengal’s labour minister Purnendu Bose last July – a visit that prompted him to comment that “for more than ten months, the boiler of the factory remains non-functional. Workers are sitting idle. The bricks of the plant quarters are being stolen away, the machineries are being smuggled out.” Nevertheless, on 3 April the company told the Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court of its reopening plans in order to stave off the court-appointed provisional liquidator.

Leeds tyre dealer to skydive for Motor Neurone charity

Charles English, managing director/owner of Alba Tyres in Leeds, will take part in the ‘Only Fools Jump In’ team charity skydive on 1 April to raise a total of £20,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). Funds raised will support people suffering from MNDA in the Yorkshire area and ongoing research; English’s support of the charity is motivated in part by his godson, James’s loss of his father-in-law to the disease last year. FIA regulation change allows full forged aluminium truck wheel coverage

The strength of xlite forged aluminium truck wheels has long been advocated by their distributor, Motor Wheel Service, but a new change of technical regulations by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile will allow the company to prove its point in the demanding truck racing arena. The FIA confirmed that it will allow all truck racing teams to run with forged aluminium wheels on the outside of the rear axle from 2013 onwards at the end of last week, responding to the wishes of Stuart Oliver, ten times winner of the British Truck Racing Championship, who supported MWS’s campaign to allow teams to fit forged aluminium wheels in all positions.

Current and future Bridgestone technology on show in Geneva

In addition to presenting its newest premium touring tyre at the motor show in Geneva, Bridgestone showed off two new technologies currently in development – one of which is currently being prepared for evaluation in the market. Winter testing at new Bridgestone proving ground

With the increasing use of cold weather tyres across many European markets as a result of legislation, recent harsh winters, and increased product awareness, the development cycle for new models has reduced in length. The world’s biggest manufacturer, Bridgestone has responded to the increased interest in the segment – and the resultant quickening of technological improvements – by signing a long-term lease on its new Sweden Proving Ground (SPG), located in Vidsel in the north of the country under 100km from the polar circle, and an hour’s drive north of Lulea airport. Its representatives told tyrepress.com that the estimated new seasonal product cycle would now be “no more than two winters”, since the “life cycle of a winter tyre is getting shorter”.

CDP Group discusses counter-trend strategies in Italian wholesale market

CDP Group’s CEO Andrea Reggi calls 2011 "a year of consolidation", which ended with success. While the turnover remained constant at about 38 million euros, net profit came in at more than 2 million euros, an improvement of 15 per cent over the previous year and a percentage of profit on turnover of more than 5 per cent. Reggi hit the targets he stated in an interview with PneusNews.it last year: to strengthen the company’s financial position, increasing the return but not the turnover. "In 2011 I wanted to understand if the 38 million euros in revenue, achieved in just three years, was a temporary episode due to specific factors such as winter 2010," said Reggi.

Michelin presents new Pilot Alpin 4 and Latitude Alpin winter tyres

Michelin has launched the latest version of its Pilot Alpin UHP and Latitude Alpin SUV winter tyres. According to the manufacturer, the new incarnations of its flagship winter products will set a new benchmark for the segment. With the tyres scheduled to arrive in the European replacement markets in spring 2012 (beginning around May), Michelin makes the claim that the tyres deliver “unparalleled results in terms of safety, mobility and longevity” by pointing to a raft of TUV SUD test results to back up its assertions.
