McCain Mocks Obama’s Tyre Plea

Following US-presidential candidate Barack Obama’s fuel-saving tip of keeping tyres inflated (as reported on Tyrepress.com last week), the Democrat’s Republican rival, John McCain and his campaign staff have issued a fundraising email mocking the suggestion.

The email reads: “John McCain says we need offshore oil drilling and we need it now. Senator Barack Obama has consistently opposed offshore drilling — calling it a “gimmick.” Senator Obama’s solution to high gas prices is telling Americans to make sure their tyres are inflated.

Pirelli’s Winter Range Proud to Be Versatile

In addition to the Sottozero, discussed on Tyrepress.com last month, Pirelli has a range of tyres for fitment on cars, sports utility vehicles and vans, and while winter capability is the obvious primary function of the series, the company is proud of the diversity of its seasonal collection.

The winter Snowsport – for passenger cars – attempts to use its versatility to its advantage. Whilst combining excellent traction and braking on snow, it also promises to offer improved handling in both wet and dry conditions, all the while maintaining performance levels. Goodyear Plans Commercial Tyre Unit for China

Chinese news sources are suggesting strongly that plans are in progress at Goodyear for a new US$500 million facility in Dalian, China. It is said that the plant will be launched in 2010, and will produce commercial truck tyres for the Chinese market – a first for the US giant.

Perhaps these reports are a little more speculative than they first seem. Back in February, T&A reported on www.tyrepress.com that Goodyear were on the verge of signing an agreement to invest up to US$1 billion – a huge figure by anyone’s estimations – in a Dalian-based venture.

Tyre Recycler Retains World Toe Wrestling Title

Tyre recycling manager Paul Beech from Tyre Recycle 2000 Ltd – a digitally formidable man also known as the ‘Toeminator’ – has secured his fourth successive world toe wrestling championship win. The 38-year old from Burton-on-Trent retained his crown after he fought off the ‘Itonian Stallion’ in the final thrilling round of the evening-long event, a spectacle witnessed by a crowd of about 200.

Tyrepress.com Experiences 103% Growth in Online Circulation

In April Tyres & Accessories experienced a 103 per cent increase in the number of visits to the company’s international tyre news websites (tyrepress.com, reifenpresse.de and tyrepress-asia.com). Between them, the three group sites registered over 461,000 visits, up from 226,000 in April 2007. The latest figures represent a new record for the company and follow four straight years of continuous monthly growth in online circulation.

April also saw the group websites achieve a new high in terms of page views, registering 4.3 million in April, up from 4.1 million last year. However, this is still short of the company’s all-time record of 8.3 million page views, which was achieved in December 2007. The distribution between group sites remained constant with a roughly 50:50 balance between the English and German language pages.

These competitors are addressing some of the same customers and are increasingly doing so on the same basis – quality and price. Michelin UK to ‘Adapt’ Run-Flat Advice

Michelin UK plc is to publish revised run-flat repair advice in the coming weeks. Commercial director, Chris Bloor, told delegates at the recent NTDA conference that Michelin would “adapt” its position. MOT Computerisation – Has it Been Successful?

VOSA says the MOT Computerisation roll out is proceeding successfully. It may be for them, but is it a success for the industry that provide employment for 35,000 testers and all the other people involved?

I have been involved in MOT testing for 30 years and have, for the last 20 years been operating a “high volume” testing station. Consequently I have followed the MOT computerisation programme closely since the project was first announced. At every VOSA seminar attended we, the delegates, have always been told the system would be totally tried and tested before going “live” and would never shut down because two separate computer systems would operate to ensure the system runs 24/7.

Bandag ‘Adapts’ its Organisation

Bandag has confirmed the news that more than a dozen staff members, including director of sales Peter De Cabooter, have left its European organisation, as was first published at www.tyrepress.com. According to the international retreading system supplier 16 employees have left the company. These people were said to be mainly operating in South European and CIS countries although some Brussels based personnel were also affected.

“Some call this restructuring, we prefer to describe this as right sizing for our future business model and allocating resources where they should be,” Bandag said in its statement. “Most of the job losses were part of a longer process of fine-tuning our organisation for future developments.
