Download NHTSA Braking Standards Report

Yesterday (July 24 2009) NHTSA announced new US braking standards requiring most truck tractors to cut stopping distances by a third. As Tyres & Accessories/Tyrepress.com reported yesterday the new regulations will be phased in over a four year period beginning with 2012 models. Toyo Proxes R888 Chosen for Wheeler Dealers TV Show

When the Wheeler Dealers TV programme upgraded a Porsche 944 into a track day cart the team chose Toyo Proxes R888’s the tyre manufacturer has reported. Mike Brewer, a well known motoring TV presenter, and Ed China, the star mechanic, buy and restore iconic cars and then try to sell them at a profit. In this instance they bought a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo and planned to convert it into a race car, complete with a roll cage, new seats and a harness. They were looking for a specialist race tyre and a leading Porsche modification company recommended Toyo Tires. “Of course the tyre of choice was the ultra high performance Proxes R888; our road legal track tyre, known for its outstanding performance and phenomenal grip, both on and off the track,” company representatives told Tyres & Accessories (tyrepress.com), adding: “Mike brewer was amazed at the extreme stickiness of the tyres and the difference they made to the overall handling and performance of the car. By the end of the transformation, the Porsche looked and performed like a true race car and sold at a huge profit.”

Goodyear Cutting Philippines Tyre Jobs

Goodyear has announced that it is to close its Philippines tyre plant, cutting 83 per cent of its staff within the country in the process, reports The Wall Street Journal. The reduced demand and the high costs of running the facility mean that the Las Pinas plants products “are not competitive in the marketplace,” according to Pierre Cohade, Goodyear Asia-Pacific regional president.

The closure will happen at the end of the current quarter, with 500 out of the 600 Philippines workers laid off. According to reports, the company’s sales and marketing departments will remain unaffected. As previously noted on Tyrepress.com, Goodyear plans to cut much of its worldwide capacity over the next two years, and this latest closure will account for 2 million of the 15 million units of annual production due to be shed. The Wall Street Journal report concludes that Goodyear will record approximately $20 million in charges as a consequence of the closure.

Michelin UK Tweets Itself to Twitter Service

What is happening in the tyre world? First your preferred source of industry news launched its Twitter service – see http://twitter.com/tyrepress for more details – and now Michelin has also joined the word of tweeting with its very own site. The company reports its tweets will include product information, tyre facts and tips, news of consumer offers and events.

Furthermore, the latest Michelin UK Twitter updates include the locations of Michelin’s Fill Up With Air roadshow where drivers can bring their car for a free pressure check and adjustment if required. Michelin’s tweets can be followed at http://twitter.com/MichelinTyres.

NTDA Named as Principal Sponsor for Brityrex 2010

Conti Appoints New PR Firm for World Cup Tyre Campaign

Continental has negotiated a deal reportedly worth six figures with Inside Media for consumer PR in the UK, selecting the firm after pitches from five companies. PR Week’s Chloe Markowicz reports that the German manufacturer has given Inside Media a UK brief that will include the promotion of the brand’s safety message and its involvement in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The commercial vehicles side of the business will still be related in the media by Conti’s existing agency Automotive PR and motoring PR will be processed in-house.

The major focus is said to be in publications outside the sphere of the traditional motoring press, with the more generalised lifestyle media specifically in the frame. Continental’s communications manager Laura Hardy told Tyrepress.com, “Inside Media are working to increase our press coverage outside of the motoring pages. A lot of drivers don’t read the traditional motoring media but we still want to take the Continental brand name and our safety message to them, that’s why we’ve chosen Inside Media who are specialize in national press and lifestyle media coverage.”

Trelleborg Schedules Hartville, OH Plant Closure for May

Trelleborg Wheel Systems has revealed that it plans to close its Hartville, Ohio plant on or within two weeks of 10 May. According to local business news sources, the wheel systems manufacturer filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with state authorities on 12 March, confirming that operations at the site would cease and that its 90 employees will be made redundant.

Automechanika ME Sets Venue, Dates

Automechanika Middle East – the largest automotive aftermarket exhibition covering the UAE, Gulf Countries, wider Middle East and Africa – has set its dates for 2009. It will be held from 31 May–2 June, 2009 at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, UAE. Some of the most lucrative export destinations can be reached through the ports of Dubai, so Automechanika Middle East is set to be a useful platform for companies to target a $1.1bn tyre industry.

Goodyear Supports African Charity Success

An expedition of Land Rover enthusiasts, supported by Goodyear, has completed its mission to travel 6,500 miles for a range of charitable causes across Africa. The team set out from Goodyear’s Birmingham head office, as reported on Tyrepress.com in early January, and finished in Timbuktu having donated their vehicles, along with educational and medical supplies, to good causes along the way. The charities included Sightsavers International in the Gambia and Mali, Operafrica in the Gambia and Village by village and Sabre Charitable trust in Ghana. In total eight vehicles were donated to help the charities conduct their work.

Goodyear supplied the vehicles with the brand’s market leading 4×4 tyres, the Wrangler MT/R. For such a dynamic range of terrain from roads and gravel to deserts and flood plains, the vehicles really needed high performing tyres for their journey. Having been used previously on the Land Rover G4 Challenge, the Wrangler’s ability to traverse the toughest of terrains with its reinforced side walls and aggressive shoulder blocks gave the required performance in the vast range of conditions the team encountered.

Cooper to Issue Quarterly Dividend

Cooper has announced that it will once again be issuing its shareholders with a quarterly dividend of 10.5 cents. This will be the 148th consecutive quarter in which the company will be making this openhanded display to its shareholders. Considering current market conditions the continuation of the 10.5 cents payment – a figure first reported on Tyrepress.com in June 2002 – shows Cooper’s determination to project an image of business proceeding as normal throughout the downturn.

The dividend will become payable on common stock at close of business on 31 March, 2009, while stockholders of record will receive their payment at stumps on 9 March.

India’s Birla Temporarily Shut Orissa Plant Again

Indian news sources are reporting that Birla Tyres – part of the BK Birla Group’s company Kesoram Industries – has closed its plant in Orissa temporarily for the second half of February. The current slide in the market has been blamed for necessitating the measure. The closure follows similar action in the back end of January 2009, as reported on Tyrepress.com. More than 4,000 people work at the plant, which has a capacity of 1.5 million units per year. It produces tyres, tubes and flaps.

JK Tyre Joins in Truck Tyre Price Slash

JK Tyre is the latest of the large Indian manufacturers to announce a large cut in the price of its tyres, reducing them by 400 rupees. In Mumbai, The Hindu reports that company president, Arun K Bajoria stated, “JK Tyres has reduced the price of truck tyres by 400 rupees in view of lowering of rubber prices.” The cut is the second in two months, following the Cenvat-related reductions in December (see Tyrepress.com for details).

These reductions come in a marked contrast to the last two years’ consistent and sharp upwards trajectory in India’s tyre prices, which totalled a 40-45 per cent increase. The increases were tracking the rising cost of natural rubber, though – much to the chagrin of the All India Motor Transport Congress – when rubber dropped in value, commercial tyre prices remained high. The AIMTC recently spent eight days conducting a nationwide strike due in part to the continued high prices of tyres.

Pirelli to Open Romanian Facility in Spring

Romanian news sources have reported today that the country’s Financiarul has announced that Pirelli will open its new diesel engine filter manufacturing facility in the southern county of Gorj in March. The financial organisation stated on its website that Gorj County Council chairman Ion Calinoiu met SC Pirelli alongside Ambiente Eco Technology director Paolo Benea to tackle common issues related to the official opening of the factory within the Bumbesti-Jiu Industrial Park. The website quotes Benea announcing that the factory will be opened at the end of March.

Back in October 2006, Tyrepress.com reported that Pirelli Romania head, Guglielmo Fiocchi, said that, “Next year we could start the construction of a new plant for production of filters for diesel engines in Gorj.”
