Auto Bild winter tyre test: Premiums, mid-brands share top rating

After narrowing the starting grid of 51 protagonists down to 20 in a preliminary knockout round, the team at Auto Bild got busy subjecting the survivors to a battery of tests in various conditions. The results of this second, decisive round of winter tyre tests have been announced, and it is a win for Dunlop. Sharing the podium were joint runners-up from Continental and – having delivered a more convincing result than its flagship-brand sibling – Kleber.

The usual suspects and others – Auto Bild winter tyre test knockout round

Whereas most publications and organisations typically include no more than ten contenders in their tyre tests, Germany’s Auto Bild prefers to line up dozens of products and then eliminate all but the most promising in a knockout round. The latest Auto Bild winter tyre test is no exception – no less than 51 tyres were subject to wet and snow braking tests to determine which would stay in the running to be evaluated in greater detail. The results of this initial round have now been published.

All-season tyres? Test recommends it pays to think big

Tyre testers have labelled all-season tyres a ‘compromise’ purchase in past years for their inability to deliver the performance of both summer and winter tyres whenever the weather snaps its fingers and demands this. In its evaluation of the current generation of all-season rubber, Germany’s auto motor und sport harbours no illusions that such a compromise still exists. It wanted to know, however, whether the compromise can be effectively reduced through considered choice of product – the answer, the publication shares, is that it can.

Pirelli tops PS hypersport tyre test

When presented late last year, the Diablo Rosso Corsa II was hailed as Pirelli’s “first tri-compound motorcycle tyre” for the road, a product developed using technology directly taken from the FIM World Superbike Championship. This provenance and compounding wizardly has now been scrutinised by German motorcycling magazine PS. The publication’s test team liked what they found.

All-season test ‘validates’ efforts to deliver high-performing tyres, says Nexen Tire

Victory in the all-season tyre test carried out by several European motoring organisations is, says Nexen Tire, proof of the superiority of its N’Blue 4 Season. The Nexen rubber was ranked first in the test of nine 175/65R14 T/H tyres thanks to its good performance in wet and icy conditions.

Test: European motoring clubs still not enthusiastic about all-season tyres

Three motoring clubs in Europe – Germany’s ADAC, the ÖAMTC in Austria and Switzerland’s TCS – have published the results of their joint all-season tyre test. The trio put nine 175/65 R14 82/86 T/H tyres through their paces, with dry testing taking place in the summer, the disciplines in autumn and ice and snow testing during the winter months.

Performance at an ‘astonishing level’ – Auto Bild Allrad tests all-season SUV tyres

It was a victory for Goodyear in the all-season SUV tyre test published by Auto Bild Allrad this month. The publication voted the Vector 4Seasons SUV Gen-2 the winner of its six-tyre comparative evaluation, honouring the Goodyear rubber with the only ‘exemplary’ rating of the test.

LRO magazine pits General Grabber X3 against BFGoodrich MT KM2 in mud terrain tyre shootout

LRO magazine has conducted a test to demonstrate the performance of mud-terrain tyres, and the difference the make to driving in deep mud, rough areas and unpredictable slippery surfaces. The magazine fit the General Tire Grabber X3 and BFGoodrich’s MT KM2, two of the most prominent mud-terrain 4×4 tyres available in the UK, to a Land Rover Discovery 2 (245/75R16) at the Snugg’s Pit off-road proving ground in Suffolk, which features some of the UK’s toughest and muddiest conditions. The tyres were tested over 10 gruelling stages in the independent test, with the results verified by LRO’s experienced team.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 returns as AMS tyre test winner

Following on from its double victory in Autozeitung’s size 225/45 R17 91/94 W/Y combined summer and all-season tyre test and the size 205/55 R16 V summer test conducted by the ADAC, Michelin recently enjoyed another win with Auto Motor und Sport (AMS). The Pilot Sport 4 was named victor in the test of 11 summer tyres published by the German car magazine late last month, the second consecutive year it has been bestowed this honour. Size 225/45 R17 94Y was the selected dimension for the AMS comparative evaluation and an Audi A3 served as test vehicle.

When one German publication releases a tyre test, you can be sure that more will follow. Within the past week we’ve reported test results from Auto Bild, Gute Fahrt and Autozeitung, and now it’s our pleasure to summarise the findings of the summer tyre test presented by motoring organisation ADAC.

Autozeitung: All-season tyres a “compromise” in joint summer tyre test

Another German car magazine’s summer tyre test has thrown in a handful of all-season tyres for good measure. Autozeitung evaluated a total of nine size 225/45 R17 tyres (W/Y speed rated and 91/94 load indices), six summer and three all-season products. Fitted to a Seat Leon, the tyres were tested in both wet and dry disciplines, with a maximum 150 points up for grabs in each of these.

Gute Fahrt tests summer and all-season tyres

Summer tyres share the limelight with all-season tyres in the latest test from Gute Fahrt. The German car magazine has evaluated the merits of nine V-speed rated size 205/55 R16 summer tyres and, perhaps for those who’ve noticed that winter isn’t quite over yet, three all-season products that are also approved for speeds of up to 149mph or 240km/h. The tyres were mounted on Volkswagen Group cars – the VW Golf, Seat Leon and Skoda Oktavia – for testing, and this was carried out at the Pirelli proving ground in Vizzola, near Milan. Testing covered the usual criteria – braking and handling in the wet and dry, aquaplaning, wet circular track performance as well as characteristics such as rolling resistance, comfort and noise.

Auto Bild names 20 finalists for its 2018 summer tyre test

It may be early in the year, but thanks to Auto Bild the first summer tyre test results from Europe are already with us. The German car magazine has stuck with its jumbo-sized format and evaluated a wide field of contenders for its 2018 summer test, with lower-performing tyres eliminated in a qualification round. Results from this initial round have now been released.

The ‘obvious choice’: Michelin on its CrossClimate + and entire lifetime performance

For its 2017 all-season tyre test, Auto Bild decided to do something different. Throwing out the standard format of pitting a number of factory-fresh tyres against each other, the German car magazine decided to additionally evaluate how the tyres performed when half and almost completely worn. Test results were published in issue 47/2017 of Auto Bild, and were very good news for Michelin.

All-season tyre test puts ‘seemingly outrageous’ 4mm tread recommendation under the spotlight

With the introduction of the CrossClimate + earlier this year, Michelin made the claim that the snow traction its tyre delivered with a tread depth of only 1.6mm was equivalent to that provided by competitor tyres with tread depths of 4mm. Furthermore, Michelin stressed that its tyres are made to be used down to the legal tread depth limit of 1.6mm. And why not? Changing earlier is simply throwing away good tread rubber.
